Why doesn't the GOP want Ohio's voting machines tested?

Ohio Republicans have blocked a proposal to test electronic voting machines prior to the 2008 presidential primary.

By a 4-3 vote, Republicans on Ohio's State Controlling Board blocked Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner's proposed $1.8 million unbid contract for voting machine testing. Brunner had already set aside the $1.8 million for the test. Her specific request to the Controlling Board was a waiver for competitive bidding. Her office had hoped to complete all testing by November 30, 2007...[more]

No votes yet

Its simple. The machines are already rigged the way the Republicans want them to be.

"Mark RollenhagenPlain Dealer Bureau Chief
Columbus- A state spending panel put the brakes on Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner's plan to test Ohio's voting machines, saying more information was needed.

The four Republican legislators on the State Controlling Board outvoted the three Democrats and pushed Brunner's request off to Sept. 24 after Brunner, a Democrat, refused House Speaker Jon Husted's request that she voluntarily withdraw it.

Husted, a Republican, said in a letter to Brunner before the meeting that "too many outstanding questions remain regarding the scope of the request and the intent of the study - issues I believe can be properly addressed by allowing time for a more thoughtful and deliberative review of the request."

In reviewing several news story on this, I see that the issue was NOT the idea of testing the machines, but rather Brunner's decision to not issue a competitive bid for the work.

But that's certainly nice spin, Chris!

Where have we heard this before?

"Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner

I find the whole stink about these machines humorous. Let's be real, politicians who are pandering for votes and old folks who are scared of technology. Oh wait, I forgot about the crazies who always think elections are stolen from them; except when they win, then they were legit.

Crazies and those afraid of technology?

And the article states that there have been improvements and corrections made and there is always resistance to change.

We are discussing changing of the basic tenants of democracy, the voting process.

People should be concerned.

as proof, the gop swept all the state offices last year...funny!!!

Otherwise I would have pretty much duplicated your post. Funny how a no-bid contract in Iraq is evil while a no-bid government contract in Ohio is just fine, isn't it?

There's a city full of walls you can post complaints at

But that's certainly nice spin, Chris!

Actually I didn't write the story, so there wasn't much spinning for me to do.

I see that the issue was NOT the idea of testing the machines, but rather Brunner's decision to not issue a competitive bid for the work.

So then why did Republican Sen. Steve Stivers say "I want to make sure we're waiving competitive bidding and giving it to people who are qualified and neutral"?

So why did Republican Sen. John Carey call this the work of "leftists and extremists"? Are "leftists" and "extremists" well-known for their no-bid contracts?

Chris - I wasn't accusing you of the spin, but I see how it might be construed that way. My intent was to direct the comment about 'nice spin' toward you...more along the line of "hey, Chris, that's nice spin in that article you linked."

My apologies for any confusion.
