what long process is vasquez talking about? the interview process was pretty quick! he was a "life long friend" to ford and torres ASKED him to apply, what is he talking about? he KNEW he had a VERY GOOD chance of getting in.
Actually, Bob Vasquez is a very nice guy with lots of smarts who just happened to get caught up in the Myers-Catlin situation. He really does like public service and, importantly, can read a financial spread sheet. I think he's going to do fine. The bigger issue is whether Toledo's TV reporters remember how to pronounce his last name. It's spoken VAH-kez.

i'm concerned since 3 out of the 5 seats were basically funded by the teachers union, and vasquez was handed the job since he's good buddies with ford, and was told to apply by torres, not to mention he fills the Latino seat that torres was so concerned about. it makes me uneasy knowing tft has control over the union AND the board. who's the voice for the kids?
Give the man a chance. He's intelligent, thoughtful, and old enough and financially set enough to know he can be his own man. He's 55, for goodness sakes, not some young toadie seeking TFT approval and looking for other offices. I think Bob will be fine on the board. He might not raise hell and make headlines, but he will take his job seriously.

THAT is an ignorant post. Most of Toledo and Lucas County's political figures who hold seats as stepping stones for other offices ARE the older ones. I don't know where you got your logic, that AGE somehow translates into him automatically being productive or more of a candidate over say Chris because he's younger. "He's 55, for goodness sakes". Up, well, he's 55, I guess that means he's the best candidate!? What flawed logic.
Could you please name for us out of the recent Board members in the past few years who has used the TPS Board as a stepping stone to a higher office?
Can you even name who was on the Board prior to this particular group or the ones before that? My intention is not to pick on you, but to point out that more end up finishing their political careers as Board members than moving up to something else...I'll help by naming a few of the past board members that I can remember from memory...
Deborah Barnett
Larry Sykes
Pete Silverman
Terry Glazer
Dave Welch
Anita Lopez
Patricia Kennedy
Keith Wilkowski
How many remember that when the seat for Patricia Kennedy needed to be filled that Darlene Fisher applied for the seat in 2001?
We don't remember days only moments...
I never specified the school board in my post Lisa, sorry if there was any confusion in that. The stepping stone comment is a blanket statement for any and all politicians within Toledo and Lucas County. Don made the comment that Bob is not some "young toadie" who has ambitions on moving on up, that because of his age, he seems to be more of a solid candidate. Do you, Lisa, honestly want to tell me that age somehow qualifies a candidate more than a younger candidate?
I can't even think of more than maybe 3 or 4 Lucas County and Toledo politicians who are under the age of 40-45, in the past 5-10 years. I think Toledo needs more younger candidates for political office.
And no, I can't remember the Board in the past from outside the past few years because for one, I'm younger, and it wasn't something I necessarily followed. But, I'm now a Toledo homeowner and I have a son getting ready to head to Kindergarten and seeing the community move forward is a something I take interest in, however, my son will not be going to TPS.
let's see how he votes.
What is the Myers-Catlin situation? I must have missed something. Please enlighten me.
Mr. Myers, you need no enlightenment. Your credentials are known to those who cast intelliglent votes. You should be on the school board. But for some inexplicable reason, you continue to hold tight to that "GOP" tag in Lucas County. You could have declared yourself a "D" in the 3 For Change campaign, none would have been the wiser about your previous party affiliation, and you'd likely would have been voting on whom to appoint to the Torres vacancy this week. I admire party fidelity. I just don't see where it makes much sense in a school board election. It's not like the school board is voting on immigration policy, funding the Iraq war, or whether to nenew NCLB. I never could understand your campaigns as a Republican in a land of Democrats, especially since your brethren all live outside of Toledo and couldn't care less about TPS or you. (Your GOPers tossed you aside, after all). Time to change parties. It really is better on this side.

I thought there was an incident I did not hear about.
Regarding the party, there is no doubt if I was a democrat I would be on the board. But it would be a bad sign if I switch parties just to get elected. I am who I am and I am not afraid to say it. Also you should be weary of those who do such thing for power, because that means they will do however the winds blow once in office, that is not a trait that I think is respectable. While others have said the same thing, I do understand your point.
oh come on chris not in toledo!!!!!!!! :) our elected officials are squeaky clean and ALWAYS put the publics interest above their own, just ask kate b. :)
Little Red, Try to add to the discussion. And tell me how to get those smiley face endings at the end of your sentences. Peace and love. :)~

I'm still interested in hearing your justification for why age holds more value for candidacy in regards to public office....
man rough croud, i get picked on for being too negative, then when i make a few sarcastic remarks i'm told to try to add to the discussion. hey, at least we aren't swearing at each other .:) i feel my comment could have added something. oh by the way did anyone see the moon last night.?:) oops. :)
why pick on me when you didn't answer the question that was directed at you?
