Troy, I think you focused on the wrong aspect of this story. I don't think many people would give credence to the "hate speech" angle. I also don't think the story revolves around the question of free speech or if it's ok to have a non-PC opinion.
I think the more complicated issue is, did Ms Dixon represent herself as an employee of UT---especially one who is "working diligently" on benefits? And if so, do her bigoted views reflect poorly upon the what the University is trying to accomplish (i.e. promote diversity)? I mean, here you have a university that says they promote diversity. And yet, you have one of their employees who says that one minority group is clearly below another minority group and the real answer lies in following ONE religion. What kind of diversity is that?
Dixon tried to establish some sort of link to the university, to wit:
"As a Black woman who happens to be an alumnus of the University of Toledo's Graduate School [....]"
True, she never stated she was employed by the university, which is the point of interest.
Largely, I believe that UT's action against her is morally wrong since all citizens have the right to express themselves as citizens alone when outside of the workplace. Alas, there is some restriction INSIDE the workplace, but that restriction can't be generalized to controlling the behavior of employees when on their own time and in their personal capacity.
The tired old line, hate speech, is paraded out.
It is not hate speech to disagree and to offer an opinion that may be contrary.
Someone hates this person because of what they said or what they say they hold to and on and on.
Using the term hate speech, seems to be nothing more than a way that dissuade people from talking to one another and not at each other.
A friend of mine works in sales at a local Cumulus radio station. The other night, he showed me the Arbitron ratings. To out it bluntly: your Troy Neff show sucks. As in No One Is Listening. You have white space where the ratings points are supposed to be. He says you spend $30K/year to buy the time. You call yourself a financial advisor - yet you piss away 30 Large for an audience of -0-?? Remind me to never ever invest a dime with your "firm".
So I listened a couple mornings. And the ratings are correct - your show sucks. You post your boring crud all over the blogs for what? You must need a lot of attention.
Are you into martial arts? I bet you are! It would be soooo typical.
You must have a collosal ego - you sure don't have any brains or talent.
Keep posting. Making an ass of yourself is really funny.
I am ninja talk show host, beware.
