Trash fee foes join budget task force

In yet another sign that there's a new sheriff running Toledo City Council, President Michael Ashford has appointed an A-team-dominated group to B-team Mayor Carty Finkbeiner's budget task force.

Three of Mr. Ashford's appointees - himself and fellow Democrats Frank Szollosi and Michael Craig - opposed the $5.50 monthly trash-collection fee when it was enacted as part of the 2007 budget in March.

"We want to meet with the mayor so we can avoid the $10 million deficit and what happened in Michigan at
4:30 a.m. [yesterday]," Mr. Ashford said, referring to Michigan's budget brinksmanship.

"Michigan and Toledo were very similar: huge increases [in taxes] in Michigan, and the city of Toledo got hit with a garbage tax," he said. "I'm going to be a strong opponent of that."

Yesterday, Mayor Finkbeiner's chief of staff, Robert Reinbolt, said the budget Mr. Finkbeiner proposes Nov. 15 likely will call for continuing the trash fee or a replacement revenue source.

Ya suppose we'll ever be able to get any of them to admit the "trash fee" was never about trash?

Sure...right after Bill Gates builds a new Microsoft headquarters in Downtown Toledo....

Does anyone actually know what pockets the trash fee is going in? The thing that confuses me is that the trash fee is being paid to the Utilities Department, not the General fund.

...was to encourage people to recycle. Since that doesn't seem to be happening there seems to be no need for it.

Now might be a good time (with the real-estate begging for customers) to consider buying property for the next land-fill. Or perhaps the city might consider eminent domain. Once Southwyck is cleared out it might be a good spot for the next land-fill. Or perhaps Northtown Square or the Woodville Mall is a better location. Supposedly, in 20 years (which isn't that long, if memory serves) it will be in

Old South End Broadway

That the administration has little if any plan, at least in the short term, to resolve the budget shortfalls expect by raising fees on existing service and making cuts and planting flowers.

The NW district Police station on Sylvania is back on the chopping block. The Bike patrol is about to be a thing of the past. With all of the retiring officers, the lack of a Police Class this or next year, they have to move the bike patrol officers back to cars as they don't have enough.

So..rather than cut the beautification programs, they want to reduce safety forces, close neighborhood police stations and take a very effective Bike Patrol off the streets. And we live in a safe city....NOT!

What else can the administration do. Except to use tried and true tactics. Threaten cuts based on the budget mess and at the same time offer little in the way of increasing revenue through development or selling off assets.

"So much for Carty's campaign promises for TWO new classes of police officers.."

Campaign promises....hand in hand with getting elected and then reality sets in for all and we are back to square one.

More planting of flowers to act as window dressing.

...the garbage tax (I refuse to call it a fee) is being paid through the utilities dept. but is being deposited/credited into the general fund.

...the north end of town already has several dumps (some closed) and the sewage treatment plant...can't we spread these kinds of things around the city????

This has been the tactic of the democrats for decades now - if they cant make the budget the first thing they talk about is cutting essentials and then never mention anything about cutting back on their little pet programs that do nothing for the citizenry as a whole.

Cut police for cryin out loud?? How bout cut garbage and let private companies come in?? Oh yeah - then they'd have to return the fake tax theyre gettign on garbage and we'd find out that theyre taking way more $$ than what it costs to get the trash picked up...

... Point Place? :^/

...exactly do you make a face sticking out its tongue???

LOL

or how about the sound of a raspberry???
