Tom Maher as a candidate for Super.

This is from a news story from my Local paper: "SCHOOL BOARD A BATTLEGROUND

The controversy over the dismissal of Indian River County School Superintendent Tom Maher in late 2005 continued through 2006 as a divided school board battled over school construction plans, personnel and school sites. This led to voters electing three new members in 2006."

As a member of the school district Tom oversaw, I saw Tom as very qualified and professional superintendant who became a victim of the ego of a board member with an agenda. Bill Hughes had difficulty accepting the blame for an idea he came up with and Tom's "firing" was the result. I might add Tom was fired without a reason.

During this process, Bill Hughes promised the community an explanation of his decisions after the terms of the "departure settlement" were agreed upon.

Bill never did reveal the reasons behind the firing, except mentioning the property purchase that the board, which Bill was a part of, approved.

Because of Bill's actions, as well as the outcry of Tom's departure, Bill Hughes was defeated in his re-election bid.

FYI: Bill Hughes = Larry Sykes. Good luck, Tom!

My apologies, Katie,

The Blade posted stories of four candidates that were forced from their jobs early. It took me a couple of minutes to catch myself when I read Tom was a candidate, when I last heard he was working for another program in the state of Florida.

As I'm sure the other candidates are as qualified as Tom, I have personal experence with Tom's abilities and professionalism and have no doubt he would make for a great superintendant for TPS.

so I missed that story. I always feel like I'm talking to a little kid who lies when I read it. You KNOW the odds are that some of what is said will be a lie and intended to influence. Yet will also be the truth.

Confuses the hell out of me trying to figure out what is what....

Ok...I'm done :-)

Thanks for the input from someone closer to the Vero Beach action. Sometimes at a distance it's hard to know what the real story was behind a situation like the one that Tom Maher found himself in.
