Some more thoughts on the recall effort

Some more thoughts on the recall effort.

The first thing I

No votes yet

...if the petitions are sufficient and the recall is held at the same time as the regular November election, there would be only minimal additional cost...the entire city will be voting on district council representatives, so all the BOE would need to do is add another box on the screen for the recall vote.

If it's done as a special election, that's another story entirely.

in the hell is everybody getting so worked up over this issue?

BRING THE TROOPS HOME-NOW!
Why should one more drop of our soldiers blood be spilled on foreign soil? Why fight/die for 'freedom' anymore when our citizens are pissing it away at the voting booth?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

'I used to have compassion, but they taxed it and legislated it out of existence.'

It is a joke.

Unfortunately, Zoocheetah, there to many people here who wish to piss and moan while not balancing that with some sort of contribution to the community. Good on you for trying to paint Toledo in a positive light to your friends.

Ever hear of EPIC, the program by the Toledo Chamber of Commerce? What your doing is exactly what the program is advocating. Seriously, Mr. Morrissey is making this into a joke. In the Blade, he compared Carty to Hugo Chavez???

Here's a sampling of the kind of people I'm talking about when I refer to Toledo's attitude problem. Seems Ryan knows more about me than I do:

You're a committed left wing secular progressive who is sticking up for committed dumbass. If the the city charter allows for a recall process and a citizen wants to exercise that right, so be it, democracy at work. I doubt the recall process will cost the city much more than a $9996 shower did or litigation for a egregious violation of the first amendment.

Thanks for drawing more attention to Recall Carty 2007. See ya at the polls in November. Wait, guess i won't.

Take a nap Carty's Cum Guzzler.

If anyone knows who this guy is could you please let me know. I'd like to meet up with him and have a nice little talk about how I feel about "people" like him.

...I think that this effort has little chance of success. But I've got to say that Tom's passion against Carty is no different from the 'passions' I've seen exhibited by others in different campaigns.

Yes, he's inexperienced in the political realm...but I'm sure all of us have been in the position of getting involved in something where, when starting out, we had little experience.

Tom is taking advantage of his rights under our city charter. He's read up on the requirements, is informing others of his effort and asking for those who support him to sign the petition.

Whether or not you agree with his POSITION, all of us should be grateful that he cares enough about an issue that he's willing to put himself forward and try to do something about it. It's more than most in this community do.

If you don't support him, that's fine. If you do support him, that's fine too. Your opinion about whether or not this will have a negative impact on the city in general is probably reflective of you opinion of the mayor - and that's okay as well.

How many people on this board have ever circulated a petition for an issue or candidate? How many have ever been involved in a campaign - working festivals/parades/lit drops? How many have ever worked the polls either as a volunteer outside or even as a poll worker?

Say what you will about the issue, but at least appreciate Tom's willingness to do something and to be involved in the process.

I've received my share as well. I did find out that you can get information from the email itself - you send it to a techie type person. With the header attached. But don't delete.

Sorry that this has happened to you too. Unacceptable on every level.

If you're here to tell me it's my fault - you're right. I meant to do it. It was alot of fun. That's why I have this happy smile on my face.

We're leaving out a very real issue here. The Mayor will have to champaign for retention. Whom pays for that??? Becasue he's a seated Mayor, consider who actually will bear the brunt of that cost. We're talking about the Finkster here...don't kid yourselves. He is a City employee himself and will have the full cart of city lawyers and media groups at his disposal. He will also have his's party's support and he will have his own sizable funding available. He didn't get elected 3 times being an idiot. He got elected becasue he's shrewed and he's well connected. The end result will be hours of lost time and distraction, not to mention the sizable cash that will be spent to preserve his position. And for what? To prove a point or allow the "process" to go forward?

I have no problem with people exercising their rights as a citizen, but in Tom's case, he's flying by the seat of his ripped pants and quickly becomming the but of his own joke. His failure to be transparent on his supporters, his impish scribe and his lack of forsight and understanding are going to kill the the movement and make ass's out of everyone involved. This whole thing smacks of thoughtless revenge and hatred. In no way do I see this as a positive move for change. I see it as more of what Tom complains about....stupid, liars making decisions that will have a negitive impact on our community.

I have to agree with shane that it sounds/looks like it's the recall guy himself using an assumed name. Reads just like it came right off the recall website.

Again..we're talking about the Mayor...and we know him well. He will do the "Carty" thing all the time..he's nothing if not consistant.

ps...I clearly cannot type too well..laf.

Hi Maggie. Could you please clarify what "minimal additional cost" is in terms of actual dollars? I haven't heard back from the BOE yet. Do you have any thoughts on what is an acceptable cost to the taxpayers of Toledo to pay for a recall election based on Mr. Morrissey's points?

Also, as someone who lives very far away much of the time, I'm constantly teased by people who know Toledo only through national news. They really like to rip on me for our Neo-Nazi riots and such. I have to work overtime as a self-appointed, unofficial ambassador. Do you have any feelings on how a recall election based on Mr. Morrissey's points will play for a national and/or international audience? Do you belive that this is something that is good for Toledo's image?

Agree...

because it's a joke. A side-show that would be funny except that it occupies the attention of our leaders and citizenry, diverting it from the REAL PROBLEMS we face.

Thank you for the info on EPIC PluPlus. I am in Toledo now and will be here all week. Is there someone over there that you know of who might be willing to talk to me?

Carleton S. Chavez.... has a certain ring, doesn't it?

I thought I did, but the Ryan Schrader I know spells their name Shrader, son of the owner of Shrader Tire and Oil. Wow, and these are the winner's that are considered backers of the recall?

The quotes around the name -- are those in the email you got or did you add them yourself? Either way, I doubt that's a real name. But if the quotes were original, it's CERTAINLY not his real name.

Which is indicative of the maturity that Thomas is exhibiting throughout this whole process, isn't it? The people in his "movement" (if you can even call it that) are not only far too immature to actually sign their own names to their actions, but they also think that the way to be taken seriously is to call somebody a "cum guzzler."

If I were a betting man, I'd say that email came from Thomas himself.

The recall effort is a total punchline. To be honest, since it's not going to cost taxpayers anything--it doesn't have a prayer of making the ballot. Toledo loves Carty.--it's just a little free entertainment.

I'll personally donate $ to the recall effort if thomas has the gall to put the "Carty is a Cum Guzzler" comment on their website. That is the official tag line of Recall Carty 2007, isn't it?

He calls you a "left wing secular progressive". He must be the opposite: a far-right wing, religious, reactionary. Doesn't sound good to me.

"The Mayor will have to champaign for retention. Whom pays for that???"

Man.. these people complained about Carty's flowers and his bathroom fixtures.

.... Wait until they get a look at his champaign bills ;)

1.) Screw those people...

2.) The Neo-Nazis were NOT from Toledo...

3.) Get a sense humor...

To be honest, I'm not apart of it yet, but have the application filled out. They have Martini nights every Thursday at Fusion to get together, but they do a lot of networking events, task force meetings on such things like economic development, and community involvement. I've actually though have been going downtown quite a bit after work during the week and meeting with several people at Home Slice discussing what can be done to help improve downtown and networking with people and such over a couple of beers, you should come by some time (around like 5:30 or so). At any rate, EPIC's website is: http://www.toledochamber.com/epic/. It cost like $75 a year for individual memberships, or your company can sponsor you.

The quotes around the name did come with the email and yes, I'm confident that the name is false. I replied to the sender with my home phone number and am eagerly awaiting a call that is yet to come. I also wrote Thomas and asked for his assistance in identifying the author because I really would like to meet this guy. I don

...for adding another screen onto the ballot options would be the cost of the time of the programmer to include that particular option...but the programmer would be creating the ballot for the election already. Then there is the cost of adding another option on the printed ballot for any absentees...probably insignificant, as just this one option wouldn't require an additional page to be printed...

I guess my description of 'minimal' is lacking in terms of actual dollars...but I believe it would be accurate to say that the cost of including it on the November election probably wouldn't be noticable when considering the fact that we're holding an election anyway - versus having to have a special election to handle the vote.

...would pay for that, same as it would in any re-election bid. The city wouldn't pay for his effort to keep his seat should they gather enough signatures to put it on the ballot.

And the 'distraction' for this recall vote is no more than Carty will contend with if he chooses to run for re-election.

ps - shane did you mean "champaign" or was that a typo?

Uhm....Dude, "screw" who? The people that I am trying to convince to produce/shoot the script I have optioned at Paramount pictures in Toledo? The people who could bring money, jobs and an image boost to your city. Are you saying you want me to say "screw you" to them? Please tell me I'm not undertanding you correctly.

2. I know the Neo-Nazis weren't from Toledo but a lot of people don't understand that when they watch a 30 second piece on CNN or see a headline only from an out of state newspaper. I'm constantly explaining the "truth" because I love and will defend my hometown until the day I die.

3. I am one of the most laid back and funny people you might ever meet but when someone or something could potentially harm someone or something I love I can turn into a rapid pit bull. This, for me, is not one of those moments but I think it's serious enough to address.

I was making a joke because, if you look, Chad said "champaign" when he meant "campaign."

... I guess I should stick to the vitriol and leave the jokes to the experts?

...I must have missed that on Chad's post...I thought the idea of Carty celebrating with champaign was a good one - but then I wondered if it was just a typo...sometimes, I just don't get the jokes - and I'm even worse at telling them - so hubby says... LOL
