Dr Gary L Wolfram:

Tax Day in Michigan

Michigan taxpayers take their anger out on Gov. Rick Snyder
http://www.freep.com/article/20130415/NEWS15/304150087/Michigan-taxpayer...
Quote:
But this year, Gov. Rick Snyder is getting much of the blowback as tax changes he pushed through the Legislature in early 2011 -- such as taxes on pension income and reductions in the Homestead Property Tax Credit -- are affecting Michigan tax returns for the first time.

Michigan Passes Right To Work

After 90 minutes of passionate debate, the state House of Representatives voted 58-51 today to pass a right-to-work bill for public employees. They still have to consider a bill for private sector employees.
Both right-to-work bills slated for House passage today have already passed the Senate. Once the House passes them, all is needed is Snyder's signature and Michigan becomes the 24th right-to-work state.

Congratulations to Michigan Legislature

While I agree that right-to-work legislation is good - the Michigan legislature did something more important than that:

http://www.rtl.org/

Right-to-life legislation is enumerated on left-hand side of the page (of above link).

Needless to say, mind-numbed liberals are very unhappy about this. Well, we conservatives got numerous Republican governors and legislatures elected for some very sound reasons.

Good job, Michigan legislators!!

LSU #1, Alabama #2, Houston jumps to #3: American Heartland Bar and Grill College Football Top 30

Overranked:
Virginia Tech. (BCS - 5)
-Signature win against 8-4 Virginia. 20 point loss to Clemson. Eeked out 14-10 win against Duke.

Arkansas (BCS- 8)
-should never have been ranked in the top 10 in the first place. Non-conference schedule stinks. Why are they still in top 10?

Oregon (BCS- 9)
-It's a good thing USC isn't eligible for the Pac12 this year because they may be the best team in the league right now. Oregon's non-conference schedule, LSU withstanding, wasn't the greatest (2-9 Missouri State??).

Underranked:
Houston. (BCS- 6)

Hidden Tax Hike On Michigan Drivers To Significantly Increase Insurance

Tagged:

Our legislature will soon take up an important bill that would stop hidden tax hikes on Michigan drivers and make common sense reforms to save Michigan no-fault insurance.

The government-mandated MCCA fee currently assessed on Michigan auto insurance premiums is equivalent to a $145 hidden tax on Michigan drivers. The current tax is bad enough, but experts testified it will have to increase by more than $1,000 per car unless reforms are made.

Week #5 of the fairest, most unbiased college football rankings out there and not bought and paid for by big corporate ESPN.

The formula is as follows:

If you defeat an opponent, one point for each win they have.

-if you win by 25+, you pick up an extra point for each win they have unless it's a non-Division 1-A team.

If you lose to an opponent, you lose one point for each loss they have

-if you lose by 25+, you lose an extra point for each loss they have. If the loss is to a non-D-1A team, this rule would also apply.

Divide the total by the number of games played.

Auburn #1, TCU #2, Oregon #3: American Heartland Bar and Grill College Football Top 50

We’ve added a new element to the rankings this week. If a team wins by 21 and more, they receive an extra .1 point for every win the team they defeat has. Conversely, if a team loses by 21 or more, they lose an extra .1 point for every loss the team they lose to has.

Also, head to head results between two teams are honored in the rankings as much as possible.

Now to the rankings. Boise State drops back one spot to #4. Michigan State to #5. Wisconsin #6. Ohio State #7.

Auburn #1, Michigan State #2, Missouri #3: American Heartland Bar and Grill College Football Top 30- Week 8

Co-Games of the Week:
#2 Auburn 24, #4 LSU 17
-Quarterback Cameron Newton delivers a Heisman-worthy performance for #2 Auburn.
#5 Missouri 36, #1 Oklahoma 27
-Coach Gary Pinkel gets his signature win and the Tigers get the Sooners ‘monkey’ off their back. Despite the AP, Harris, and BCS rankings, this was not an upset. One, if you looked at Missouri’s schedule, they were way underanked to begin with. Two, the Sooners deserved to be in the #1 slot because of the schedule and wins. However, there were chinks in the armor and Missouri was able to take advantage of them in Columbia.

Tireman Auto Service Centers Fights Recession with Free Tire Repairs and Free 36 Month Road Hazard Warranty

I was not sent this directly, but wanted to publish it here. I am a happy customer of Tireman service centers. The local company's tire prices are very competitive and they back their warranties. I know this from the experiences I have had.

Haiti aid: China one million vs U.S. one hundred million

Is it right that our country is bankrupt but is borrowing one hundred million from China to give to Haiti? China which has a bounty of eight hundred billion of the U.S. treasury is donating a miserly one million, go figure?
Detroit with 50% unemployment and a Michigan state on the verge of bankruptcy has its Nonprofits organizing Aid to Haiti.

Public school teacher absenteeism declines when principals have more control

I thought this is worth mentioning, especially here in Toledo.
====
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Public school teachers took less time off when principals had more flexibility to dismiss them without completing elaborate documentation or attending a hearing, one of two new University of Michigan studies shows.

Two papers authored by Brian Jacob, a professor at the U-M Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, examined a policy change in the Chicago Public School system in which principals were given complete autonomy to dismiss probationary teachers.
