One has to wonder. My neighborhood is filled with smoke from fireworks. I think this year is worse than before and has even made it into our house. Will the smoke nazis stand up and protect us innocents from secondhand fireworks smoke, which unlike smoking is actually illegal?

Hundreds swept up in mortgage fraud arrests

WASHINGTON: More than 400 real estate industry players have been indicted since March — including dozens over the last two days — in a Justice Department crackdown on incidents of mortgage fraud nationwide that have contributed to the country's housing crisis.

The increasingly controversial proposed Toledo law to require owners of vacant buildings to register and pay a fee was vehemently denounced yesterday by a number of opponents and applauded by others during a lengthy City Council committee hearing.

If approved, the fee starts at $100 for residential buildings and increases the longer a property is vacant.

HIV-positive man sentenced 35 years for spitting at officer

An HIV-positive man convicted of spitting into the eye and mouth of a Dallas police officer has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Willie Campbell, who the jury said used his saliva as a deadly weapon, will have to serve half his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Once again the voters voice has been ignored and trampled on. The Supreme Court has overturned the gay marriage ban, even though the citizens made clear they wanted it banned. Yet, another example of unconstitutional legislation from the bench. Its clear, when immorality has an agenda....the will of the majority means nothing.

Ohio's top court to mull cities' worker residency rules

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Supreme Court yesterday agreed to mull the issue of whether cities may require their employees to live within their borders.

The court agreed to hear appeals of rulings involving the cities of Lima and Akron that struck down a 2006 state law prohibiting residency mandates when it comes to most city employees.

Toledo City Council seeks review of development plan

Toledo City Council offered mostly cheery-eyed praise yesterday for officials from the California-based company looking to transform Swan Creek downtown into a $300 million mixed-use riverwalk development.

An appellate court sided a third time with cities in their battle to enforce laws requiring municipal employees to live in the cities for which they work.

20% boost in parking tickets in Toledo goals list

By the end of the year, Toledo police hope to increase parking tickets issued by 20 percent, complete a security assessment of all the city's public and parochial schools, and be able to scan license plates automatically with at least one of their patrol cars.
