Some Rich Districts Get Richer as Aid Is Rushed to Schools

RANDOLPH, Utah — Dale Lamborn, the superintendent of a somewhat threadbare rural school district, feels the pain of Utah’s economic crisis every day as he tinkers with his shrinking budget, struggling to avoid laying off teachers or cutting classes like welding or calculus.

Just across the border in Wyoming, a state awash in oil and gas money, James Bailey runs a wealthier district. It has a new elementary school and gives every child an Apple laptop.

Proposed 20% state cutback angers charter school chiefs

Toledo charter school leaders said Monday their schools will face devastating effects if Gov. Ted Strickland's proposed 20 percent cut to charter school funding is approved.

Renee Marazon, superintendent of the Maritime Academy of Toledo, said the reduction could force the school to close its doors.

"If I lose 20 percent of my funding, that translates into $500,000 a year. I cannot afford that," Ms. Marazon said during a news conference at the school at 1000 Monroe St.

You pay for the service the City provides

I could not believe that someone in the City said this, but they did:

"People think they're paying [taxes] to get every street plowed and salted, but they're paying for the service we provide."

The City of Toledo is accepting resumes for all positions

Tagged:

There was a good sized ad in the Toledo Blade today stating that the City of Toledo is accepting resumes. Huge list of positions/departments/areas.

Makes you wonder if they are getting resumes on hand for scab workers, in case the union decides to strike?

I'm sure in this economy, they'll have no shortage of resumes or applications.

TPS students making campaign literature as part of class assignments?

Maggie Thurber is reporting on her blog, TPS students are making pro-levy cards to send to their parents in class. That is just poor taste and a perfect example of group think gone bad.

Gas prices had risen quickly across the country with Hurricane Ike leaving refineries and pipelines idled and destroying offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. But prices eased amid the hurricane cleanup.

What Happened to Jim Blue of WNWO TV24?

Toledoan of the Year 2007??

I was just on the city's website and noticed an ad for Toledoan of the Year 2007 award nominations. I was kinda thrown off, thinking maybe they put the wrong year. Reading further it says to nominate somebody who made a difference in the year 2007. By the time the awards are announced this summer, 2008 will almost be half over. I don't get it....

I thought this was a breaking news and political blog...

Seriously, nothing personal, but I could give a shit less about fat monkeys and soccer playing goldfish. Chris, I hope you clean this stuff up, or you can drop me off the list of members to this site.

Illinois smoking ban tamps down puffing at pipe convention

ST CHARLES — There will be no indoor smoking at a large convention for pipe smokers in Illinois.

A new Illinois law bans smoking in public places. That's taken some of the steam out of this weekend's Chicagoland International Pipe & Tobacciana Show in St. Charles.
