Public school teacher absenteeism declines when principals have more control

I thought this is worth mentioning, especially here in Toledo.
====
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Public school teachers took less time off when principals had more flexibility to dismiss them without completing elaborate documentation or attending a hearing, one of two new University of Michigan studies shows.

Two papers authored by Brian Jacob, a professor at the U-M Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, examined a policy change in the Chicago Public School system in which principals were given complete autonomy to dismiss probationary teachers.

Toledo’s children

I always look for confirmation when exposing people or situations. To expound on the topic “Toledo’s Children,” I have been battling with myself as to whether or not I should release this topic with my opinions however harsh they may be. My confirmation came from two sources, one an individual who heads one of the organizations and one I have been debating on whether or not I am being too harsh, the second came from a full page ad taken out in the Toledo Blade by the Toledo Blade titled “We the people.” That ad stated in it’s entirety, “Eight out of ten people read The Blade.

Sylvania Substitute Teacher Accused Of Forgery

I guess that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. In addition to Doug and Pam Haynam who spearheaded the attempted land grab by the Sylvania city government last year, we now have Benjamin 'Bugsy' Haynam, who ended college a few credit hours short but didn't see that as a major obstacle to getting a job in Sylvania schools. Of course, Ma Haynam is on the school board – at least for now.

The Oregon school board last night approved a plan to lay off 31 teachers, 2 administrators, and up to 30 other staff members next school year to save nearly $3.2 million a year.

If that isn't enough, 13 more teaching, administrative, and staff positions will need to be eliminated, bringing the total savings to nearly $3.8 million, Superintendent Mike Zalar said.

THEN he says:

Students, Mr. Zalar said, will encounter minimal impact from the changes.

Teacher facing action over thong photos

if i could start the van halen song "hot for teacher" now i would. :)

A teacher was today facing possible disciplinary action after appearing in a range of "completely inappropriate" poses on a modelling website.

Natasha Gray, who was voted the UK's sexiest teacher on a television show in 2002, was shown in one photograph wearing a thong while lying on her front on a bed.

Ben Slade, headteacher of Manor Community College in Cambridge, said the photographs of the head of PE should not have been published.

James Parlin: The most talked about show that no one saw

The most talked about show that no one saw is how Pennsylvanian artist James Parlin describes the controversy surrounding his exhibit at the Little Gallery on the Firelands branch of Bowling Green State University in Huron, Ohio. Yesterday evening, I got the chance to catch up with Mr. Parlin to talk about what happened and what he plans on doing next.

A Good Teacher

I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Life comes from life. It might even be the greatest of the art since the medium is the human mind and spirit. The universe is a living thing made by love and of love. I shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery. The earth too as part of the universe is a living thing made of love.

THE TOLEDO PLAN

We have done an extensive study of The Toledo Plan and feel that it should be abolished as it is supposed to rid the school system of “bad” veteran teachers through evaluation, instead it is being used to rid the school system of first year teachers through peer mentoring. Its target, primarily, is the non traditional first year teacher.

It was Steel

I saw on the WTOL 6PM news it is the board president Steel in the diciplined teacher data base...doesn't this set a bad example?
