News From Tom Waniewski, Toledo City Council

DON'T FORGET

There will be a free "Rebuild Your Credit" workshop Saturday, February
9th at the downtown library. Go to the McMaster Family Center from 9
a.m. to noon. Free parking and free continental breakfast.

This is tax season. I want to remind you to look closely and see if
you qualify for the Earned Income Tx Credit. You'll find this on your
federal forms. Families with children and a household income of under
$40,000 could receive as much as $4,000 back. Single individuals are
also eligible. Consult a tax expert or read your federal tax form
closely for this credit. If you're interested in volunteering to be
tax preparer, Lucas County wants to hear from you. Call 2-1-1 for more
info.

Development in the District

The University of Toledo Board of Trustees is mulling over an idea to
develop the area on the northeast corner of Bancroft and University
Hills. Reportedly UT is interested in landing a hotel on that
property.
Gypsy Moth Spraying

About 54 acres in west Toledo will be sprayed for gypsy moths this
spring. The larvae have been found to have infested trees in an area
north of Central bounded by Drummond, Cheltenham, and I-475. There
will be a meeting to discuss the spraying and answer any questions
February 13th at the Sanger Branch Library from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Fresh Market Update

The owners of Westgate Shopping Center have submitted updated plans to
the city Plan Commission involving the Fresh Market store. The Plan
Commission asked Westgate to make some changes to their original
plans. Some of those changes included reworking of the facade and
using sod instead of stone in the rear of the store. Fresh Market is
expected to open in the fall of 2008 if all goes well.

Streets Update

We've been working to get Middesex Ave. paved. I'll keep up the
lobbying efforts. The city goes through a rather elaborate process for
determining which streets are paved. The mayor has promised to pave
about 40 miles this year. Did you know District 5 barely had two miles
paved last year? One block, generally, is two-tenths of a mile. I'll
keep working to get our fair share of tax dollars to maintain roads.

Also, we're working to see what else can be done on Boydson. Part of
that street is experiencing drainage problems and the stone paving may
be contributing to that problem.

Can I help you?

In keeping with a passionate campaign promise of communicating with
District 5 residents, you have received this e-newsletter. If I can
help you with anything, please give me a call at 419-245-1050. If I
don't know the answer, I won't tell you that I do. But together we can
find a solution. Please feel free to forward to anyone you know in the
district. If you do not want to receive this newsletter, just click on

Thanks very much neighborhood. Tom is my district councilman, and I also know him personally as I went to grade school with his daughter.

I wish my district councilman would pay attention to the effort to communicate that Waniewski has taken.
He brings new vision and a new way of getting things done.

I was going to post this, as Tom IS my councilman, and Im damn glad I voted for him.

I first emailed him a thank you for his comments when they were talking about forming a business plan for the Erie St Market. To paraphrase, he said that the ESM did indeed need a business plan, but that the only plan they needed was an EXIT plan on how best to spruce it up for its SALE to a private entity!

I emailed my thanks for looking out for my tax dollars like that, and he responded (and quite quickly I'd add) and asked me if I'd like to get his newsletter.

Now let me ask you - how much effort does that newsletter take?? Putting a few things that are going on in the district down in writing (or having an assistant do it) and sending it out to interested parties??

I'd say not a whole lot of effort at all - but what reward will he get in goodwill from his constituants? Basically 'keeping us in the loop'. I applaud Tom's newsletter and his efforts on council thus far.

(And yeah, if he pisses me off, I'll let him know that too, but he sounds like the kind of guy who'd want to know that anyway! )

Why not go to this site:

Find your councilman and email him this swampbubbles posting and let him or her know that you'd like them to begin sending newsletters too?

Been there, did that, and waiting on the follow the great lead to begin

From the send to a friend link on the Councilman's newsletter.

A member of council has responded that a similar effort is planned and being worked on.
