New Year, new council members, Subterfuge!

Toledo Councilman Lindsay Webb yesterday admitted
her first official vote in public office was part of a deliberate
deception over the council presidency vote.

"This was my own personal opinion, and I did not shrivel under any
political pressure," she said. "When I talked to the mayor, he was
quoting people like Harry Truman and the Bible."

Ms. Webb said the card quoted Proverbs 29:2, "When good people run
things, everyone is glad." The same line appears verbatim in The
Message version of the Bible. The remainder of the verse in the same
version of the Bible is "but when the ruler is bad, everyone groans."

Ms. Webb said she engaged in the subterfuge to prevent a deadlock over
the vote or introduction of a third nominee for the presidency.

"I didn't want that," she said. "When politicians put politics above the business of the city, I have a problem with that."

Mr. Sobczak defended Ms. Webb yesterday.
"She voted her conviction, and that's the type of council member we
need, instead of what might be politically expedient," he said.

"I'm glad she was able to withstand the pressures that were brought to bear."

Wants to be above the politics of the land, engages in subterfuge and is congratulated for voting her convictions and yet she is stated to have said she supported one person.

Same as it ever was?

Let the groaning begin.

So which is worse: that she called a meeting to promise support to a fellow councilman with deceit in her heart, or that she wants us to believe that she really hadn't made up her mind as to who to vote for until the moment of the vote ?

Can you imagine starting your policitcal career by putting ethics right in everyone's faces and daring them to disagree with you ?

And to the posters on the other similiar thread who were very gracious and gave Webb the benefit of the doubt in that there may have been more to the story, ie some real relevant-to-Toledo issues invovlved in her actions...nope. Sorry, just another player in Toledo politics as usual.

It is refreshing that it's finally a woman, though isn't it ?

The good thing is that we didn't have to wait a year to find out about her. She let us know during her first Council meeting that we should believe nothing that comes from her lips. She has immediately demonstrated to all the other Council members that she can't be trusted.

You Go Girl !!!

Is that Ashford and crew believed her. Which proves my point..they are not what we need. The dolts that bought her "promise" knowing how they had played her through the campaign, the nasty stuff MA pulled on her and the countless idiotic moves made by the other players..oh please! Michael wasn't planning to give her or the other members any committie chairs and Mark will.

The Truth just put up an online story about this subject - if true, Ms. Webb has learned the art of politics in Toledo very quickly or perhaps applied her lessons quickly as she is not new to Lucas County Democratic party politics.

"The 90-minute gap during which Webb completed her turnabout was finally explained by the end of the week. She admitted that the promises of support for Ashford were a ploy to impact the proceedings in a manner that would bring about the desired result of forcing a tie. That’s how the game is played, concluded the new councilwoman."
Playing games is for the school yard, this is city government and we need leaders.
This council is off to a fine start.

... about Toledo's decay attracting more and more corrupt politicians, who well know they can get into office easier, and under less oversight once emplaced? I don't think Webb is worried at all about her position. She got in. That's all that matters with our voting public really not giving a shit.

Chris Myers stood in front of a camera and signed an ethical pledge. He was roundly ignored, and this ethical malaise is going to grow to dangerous proportions.

green, no life-experience, no business experience,pimply-faced LAWYER, fresh out of TU. That's soon to be all we have on council. Don't we have any middle-aged people who have ran several successful small businesses before that will run for council??

BRING THE TROOPS HOME-NOW!

Since he's a bit of a character -- as all businessmen tend to be -- he gets pwned every election. On average, Toledo doesn't WANT businesspeople in political office. So we end up with the do-nothing class.

Seems to me the only vote that matters is the one at the meeting. Also, what is all this scheming going on behind the scenes. What really happened and how did it happen. Aren't there sunshine laws and where do they come into effect here? Is this a standard of practice? I am distrubed at all of the talk about wondering about support for Ashford.

We had the same questions raised before when Council acted to remove and then elect another.

If I remember correctly, Council meetings with regards to the actions that they take relative to the management of the Council are not subject to the Sunshine Laws because the issues are not are in the public domain, unlike meetings that were held with regards to legislation.

Seems the headline was a gimme seeing that Councilwoman Webb admitted to being deceptive.

What a way to start off a term of office.
