Finkbeiner, apparently only speaking for himself, said that Marines are not welcome in Toledo. Well I welcome Marines in Toledo to train and learn skills that will save their lives. Apparently Carty does not think they should practice the skills they need to save their lives here.
The Marines who fight bravely and have died fighting the terrorists on our behalf, just needed an urban environment to practice in and now Toledo gives them the cold shoulder. Let's not mention the money spent setting up for the event, the Marines that traveled from Grand Rapids Michigan a 3.5 hr trip. In my opinion, this is the lowest, coldest thing done to our fine men and women in the army and I think the mayor should apologize.
The thing that gets me the most angry about this is, ok you have an issue with them training, well they already prepared for it and probably spent at least $15,000 for the buses and the preparation for the training, at the least allow them to finish it this time. But no, Carty humiliates all of us in front of our brave men and women who just wanted to practice to save their lives. Hey those guys and gals put their lives on the line, the least we can do is allow them to do some training. Besides no one had a cell phone or a way to call them? Does not sound plausible.
The mayor does not speak for me in saying we don't want them here and I am sure others feel the same way too.
And Carty is worried about bad attitudes in Toledo? This is the most humiliating thing done in Toledo and he did it himself. He should apologize

- Non-partisan Demand For Mayor Finkbeiner To Apologize -
Members of Toledo City Council will announce an initiative to support U.S. Marines this afternoon (Sunday) at 3:00 p.m. in the lobby of One Government Center.
Council will also conduct a public hearing 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 12th in Council Chambers to hear from the Finkbeiner Administration about what went wrong and give an opportunity for public input.
http://glasscityjungle.com/wordpress/?p=2571
Finkbeiner stands by his decision. Smith reiterates Carty did not want them in Toledo:
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Mayor Carty Finkbeiner said Sunday that he stands by his decision to stop a Michigan-based Marine battalion from holding an urban warfare training session downtown.
"He told me he did not want them, as he put it, 'playing war in Toledo,'" Smith said of the 2006 training session. "I told him, as a former Marine, that if one young Marine's life is saved because of training he or she received in Toledo, Ohio, then it was worth the inconvenience."
Soldiers say training is vital to Iraq deployment:
The training is vital to their combat mission, given the deployment in 2006 and part of 2007 to Iraq's western Anbar province, he said.

at the Recall! hahaha. Bet the wish they had signed now. Hey Tom...vindication comes when ya least expect it.
The mayor told the Marines to leave because the training exercise frightened residents.
But residents are frequently frightened about lots of things. Residents are not just frightened about things that are merely simulations, but other things which are indeed real.
Isn’t it ironic that the the mayor sprang into action based on calming residents’ illegitimate fear? It’s fear based on something which is pretend, yet the mayor fails to respond to residents who have legitimate reasons to be afraid based on reality.
Plus, it is not like there is a ton of people downtown to be afraid. If they do it today on Saturday, only those freak/weirdo protesters would be downtown in that area and yes of course they would be afraid. It is not like they invaded Toledo and we did not know what to expect. This is the 4th year or so they have done this.
Hey those guys and gals put their lives on the line, the least we can do is allow them to do some training.
acts before he thinks it out.
He could have waited on this one
Actually, some people WERE frightened last time they did this. A few years ago, I was going over to get a haircut and trying to dodge the soldiers roaming the streets when I saw an older, frail woman crossing the street. She looked absolutely bewildered and quite uneasy by all the guys running around with rifles. I went up and told her that it was just an exercise and not to be worried, that nothing had happened. So it does happen that people can be put off by this stuff. My question is, why can't they do this in Grand Rapids?
Maybe it is because they want unfamiliar territory. If they are from the Grand Rapids area, they may be familiar with the city. I have been to GR several times and it is the same as Toledo, especially on a weekend - dead.
Why do the Marine Reservists in Perrysburg train in Toledo instead of Grand Rapids?
And I agree, downtown GR is empty on weekends, probably even moreso than Toledo during summer. Let them practice close to home so they avoid wasting seven hours on a bus and the fuel needed to transport the men and equipment.

five times out of nine I'll show you an exceptional man." -Charles
Bukowski
Everything else aside, downtown GR is not empty on the weekends. In fact, I would consider it to be a "happening" place. It is much, much more active than Toledo. I have family there and have spent much time in GR during the week and weekends.
And the only things to do downtown were hang out at Purple East, have dinner at the BOB, and see a Rampage or Griffins game. Ann Arbor has a "happening" downtown, downtown GR is anything but. They used to block off a large swath of downtown to run the West Michigan Grand Prix, so blocking off a street for military training is feasable.

While this is a silly point to go back and forth, have you been there lately? Have you seen the new construction taking place? Everything from high-rise condo's, expansion of GVSU, and office space are currently being constructed. There are cranes all over the place for the development. Hell, they even have name-brand hotels, such as Marriott and Crowne Plaza. I know that doesn't stack up to the Park Inn, but what does. These are pretty good indicators their downtown isn't dead.
Besides the MLK bridge, when was the last time private development brought cranes to construct something in downtown Toledo? Now, that's "dead".
Drive 196 or 31; see it with your own eyes. Otherwise, it's a trivial argument and I'm finished with it.
It might have something to do with Grand Rapids actually having an active downtown. There are actual people going things in their downtown, even on the weekends!
1. Carty should have let them stay.
2. The breakdown in communications between the police and the mayor's office on something of this nature is totally inexcuseable and someone's job should be in jeopardy.
3. "Toledo police issued a press release Tuesday to media outlets on behalf of the Marines that asked Toledoans not to be startled by the sight of camouflaged soldiers toting M16 rifles."
Did anyone hear about this on local television, radio or newspaper reports since the press release 72 hours before Marines were to begin exercises?
4. I realize, off topic, but: The Marines who fight bravely and have died fighting the terrorists on our behalf
If we're talking Afghanistan, OK, I'll buy this train of thought. It does not apply to Iraq, where there are indeed Marines fighting, but not terrorists, and certainly not on our behalf.
Yes, McCaskey to answer your question #3. I heard it on WTOL's noon news and Channel 13 also repeatedly last week:
http://abclocal.go.com/wtvg/story?section=news/local&id=5944126
I hope the television stations gave it better play during the actual newscast. The bit on the website link is buried...I almost missed it all together.
How about WSPD? Was this news release given decent play there during news segments? Did the talking heads ever mention it during their shows?
Anything in the paper before this?
I saw it on television two or three days ago. I was actually thinking about running downtown to watch when I heard.
And contrary to your post before, the Marines ARE fighting on our behalf in Iraq because they are fighing for our constitution. They are defending the Constitution by following the orders of the Commander-In-Chief, and whether or not you agree with the Iraq War you have to respect that.
we'll keep the thread on topic.
We should be proud that they would want to practice in our downtown. The skills that they are perfecting in the heart of our city may save their lives and the lives of others someday. Obviously there's a reason they picked downtown Toledo repeatedly. But f**k the military, right Pete? Let's hope they all get themselves killed, right?
I didn't say that, westhead. What I did say was some of these things frighten little old ladies. I don't deny the necessity of training, but it shouldn't be at the expense of terrifying civilians. Don't be an asshole.
the training exercises from I believe 2004. I was downtown at the time. It was...unnverving for me, probably downright frightening for others...because many people had no clue as to what was taking place and why.
There has to be a steady drumbeat of information about this beforehand. The police, mayor's office and local media have to all be involved and on the same page about letting residents know what the hell is going on.
Hmmm.... Isn't our beloved Brian Schwartz the city's Information Officer?.........
Who exactly is going to be frightened on the weekend in downtown Toledo in February ??
Must be all those people visiting COSI and the Erie Street Market.
damn lol
I emailed the Mayor demanding an apology.
from me, if the SysOp will allow deficit spending.
I agree with McCaskey. Finkbinder and TCC have reached a brand new low.
A communication breakdown between the City and Police was no reason to send the Marines home. The Marines had obviously done all that is required of them prior to the begining of the exercise. The Mayor should have taken issue with his Police/Fire Chief (maybe the duel roles are too much for Chief Navarre).
In response to Pete and McCaskey on people being frightened. People being scared is no reason to allow our Armed Forces to become lax in their training. Calming the populace could have been easily done by positioning a police officer at either end of the roadblocks to answer questions. And unlike many of the other times TPD is used as "security" the Marines generally compensate for the added cost as it can be included in their training budget.
Toledo should have been more accomodating to the Marines because as my father told me this morning "Toledo was listed as #3 on the likely terrorism target list last week. Who do they think would respond if it actually happened?"
Also Carty should have been more accomodating for the simple fact that this training was bringing federal non-aid money to the city. Am I the only one who thinks the mayor was stupid for the sheer fact that he turned away a temporary source of money for the city?
MikeyA
#3 on the List. They must have heard about our Ball of Twine to replace COSI.
Perhaps the Marines should go to Lima, OH. That would really freak out the Crack Heads!!!
I didn't have so much a problem with the training itself, as the lack of communication between all responsible parties that resulted in the Marines being sent back to Grand Rapids.
I agree with your 'roadblock' idea. That would have worked.
Toledo is #3 on the likely terrorism list? Whose list? #3 nationally? No way, no how.
I googled many ways to find this list. I find this very interesting. Anyone know where I can find this list ??
A list mentioned on the news about a month ago. I believe it was a 'top 100 (or more) ' terror-watch list 'for large-mid-size cities and Toledo was somewhere on the list, but alot closer to 100th than the 3rd. Don't recall all the factors, but had something to do with our proximity to Detroit and the huge Muslim community of Dearborn.
It was a list that was reported last week. I really don't believe that Toledo was #3 but it was one of the top places.
Because he said #3 and I was unsure was why I put his phrase in quotations.

about the list
we're in for quite a ride here
Yay! Now we are becoming the Florida of Fark. Actually some of the comments about Carty are pretty funny. Where is sub-commandante Bob when you need him?
This posting is listed under "dumbass" on fark.com. Speaks volumes of the perception others have of us.
Good to see Carty's erratic behavior cause something positive for our city this time.
This is a really good chance for Toledo to take a public stand against the US war machine, and a great example for other communities to follow.
ofac you are as out there as the citizens of Berkeley.
This has nothing to do with taking a stand against the war. This has to deal with interfering with the training of our military members.
It's a blessing that this unit is not going into a combat environment the mayor's actions could have cost the lives of some dedicated young Marines.
MikeyA
How can the Mayor claim "communication breakdown" if, following a press release, the local news carried this information?
While secondary (or maybe not), where were those 200 Marines staying? Were they going to stay in local hotels and eat in local restaurants? Were they going to spend their money at local bars and strip clubs?
Thanks, Carty, you jackass!! I hope Brian Swartz comes back to the board to explain this crap. Think that will happen?!? Me, either!
Knowing Marines and how they train they probably would have slept in shifts in either makeshift hooches or in the the vehicles they brought.
Of course that's assuming that they would get any type of real rest allowed. In this type of training you need to make it as realistic as possible and in a combat environment sleep is always a luxury.
MikeyA
Do you (or anyone else) know what they did when they were in town previously?
I saw them downtown about two years ago around the area bounded by Washington Ave-Jefferson-Summit-Michigan Ave. They had several commander-observers every other block or so watching the troops. The soldiers were crouched in doorways, scurrying along sidewalks, walking along the streets, and generally looking like they were on a mission. All were carrying weapons and they were really young... didn't look like they knew what they were doing, really. I didn't take the time to watch whether they were taking an objective or anything. Mainly, a bunch of nineteen-year-olds playing war. The thing is, I saw immediately what was up and didn't think a whole lot about it. But I saw other civilians looking kind of startled by the whole thing. The one old lady was kind of freaked out. If they're going to do this stuff, they REALLY need to prepare the populace.
I guess I need to clarify.
Where did they stay? Did they set up tents? Or did they stay in hotels? Did their training go through the night? Were they able to get some time off to experience Toledo's various establishments?
Pete this comment shows your ignorance of our military.
"All were carrying weapons and they were really young... didn't look like they knew what they were doing, really. I didn't take the time to watch whether they were taking an objective or anything. Mainly, a bunch of nineteen-year-olds playing war. The thing is, I saw immediately what was up and didn't think a whole lot about it"
In the military we most of the jobs are handled by those under the age of 24. Every job in the military is designed to support our most basic soldier, sailor, or Marine and they are generally and 18-20 yr old.
Only in the military will you find people this young responsible for millions of dollars worth of equipment and more importantly the lives of civilians and their their colleagues.
If the rest of our 18-25 yr old population showed the drive, competency, and decision making ability as our most youngest in the military we'd have a lot less problems.
MikeyA
Mikey, your military-know-it-all arrogance is showing again. Next time I have anything to say about the military, I'll run it past you first so you can give me your blessing. By the way, how do you reconcile your life's ambition to become a career Marine and your claim to be a journalist? Aren't the two a little at odds? And which comes first?
Also, good luck with your ROTC, budding soldier! I remember doing that about forty years ago.
I was in the ROTC. I am not anymore. Why? I graduated. While a student I was also a Sgt, albiet no longer in the fleet. When I left the fleet I was a Cpl.
I was a journalism major at Eastern Michigan University. Prior to enlisting I was an engineering student at UT. Does being a journalist put me at odds with the military? Quite the contrary. It's a common misconception.
I believe in up front truth. Honesty is the main value to honor. A good journalist reports both sides to get to the truth. It's my belief that this is hallmark of American journalism however it has gotten away from it. Also I could be a journalist in the Marine Corps if they so decide to make that my new MOS or Military Occupational Specialty.
While I was in the fleet I requested twice to be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. Each time I was denied by my immediate Commander.
