"Toledo may have natural and man-made geographic
advantages to support developing a transportation-based economy, but
that future won't happen by itself, two local transportation leaders
said."
Government planners and academic thinkers "can't drive the idea if the
private partners and businesses are not with it," Rich Martinko,
director of the University of Toledo Intermodal Transportation
Institute, told an audience of about 40 at the last of three Toledo
Regional Chamber of Commerce Eggs 'n' Issues events focused on the
Toledo area's transportation future."
"
Jeff Wingate, president of the Toledo Trucking Association and owner of
a small trucking firm in North Toledo, said the creation of
Transportation Opportunity Districts could be a catalyst for
distribution-related business growth the in the region.
The overall presentation, he said, was a rallying call to local businessmen.
"We need to lead by example, and go to our private sector and ask them
to invest and believe," Mr. Wingate said. "We have a tremendous work
force here, but we need leadership."
