In light of the recent rash of accidents...I pose this question. HAVE YOU EVER DRIVEN AFTER DRINKING ALCOHOL OR ON DRUGS?

My hard and fast rule is to only have one beer if I am out . For me, that is all I can handle before I get affected.
So which answer do I check ?
--and as you can see the poll stands now at 17 of 21 being honest and saying that yes at some time in the past they have driven under the influence. The only surprise is how many admitted it, not how many did it.
That is rather insulting.
I am the one who checked "No, I know better" and I am being 100% honest. Just because someone didn't check "yes" doesn't mean that they are a liar.
I don't drink. I didn't drink as a kid either. I would never - and have never - driven drunk.
I am often the DD and will gladly continue to offer my friends and family rides.
We've all made mistakes in our past. Whether it was a mistake like this or not.
Unfortunately our pundits and judicial system seem more interested in lowering BAL levels than actually punishing the repeat offenders. Making a mistake is one thing not learning from it is another.
I think the "party plates" was a good idea and more states are doing it. That is actually something that could help stop repeat offenders.

and if I had ever been responsible for an accident of this magnitude I should expect to pay for it. I have not and would not be on a highway if I had a beer though. I don't turn the keys in the ignition if I've had one drink - but when I was younger I did. Once you've lived long enough to read some of these stories - you know that nothing is worth taking the chance that you might kill someone.
Certainly when I was young and foolish I drove while under the influence. These days if you're involved in an accident and you've been drinking, prepare to be nailed to the cross. Even if the accident was not your fault, you're guilty and are going to jail.
What is the difference between choices "Yes", and "Yes but I know I shouldnt have"
Does the latter have some redeeming value that just plain old "yes" doesnt?
I'm at bars all the time. I know I can have a beer or three and drive fine. You have to know yourself.
I'm not looking to qualify anything, like it didn't effect me, or I 'shouldn't have.' The honest answer for me is yes. And, that's it.
I checked "No" & it was an honest 'no' . I did get drunk when I was younger, but somebody else was always driving - and there's the catch (for me, at least) - because some of those times, the driver had been drinking (just not me driving). If I had to be completely honest - I'd have to admit to driving with one beer in me. I'm an easy drunk & small, so one or two drinks would put me at or over the legal limit. Of course, it also means that small people who have one or two glasses of wine or beer at a restaurant may also be at, or over the legal limit - but not plastered drunk at 3x the legal limit, and probably not likely to cause the crashes that have happened recently. Big difference between being over the legal limit at 1 1/2 drinks & being over the legal limit at 2x - 3x times over the legal limit.
