Unbelievably Time magazine has decided to use the iconic photo of the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi in thier global warming issue. The flag being raised by courageous Marines is replaced with a tree!!!!! The story is on the Drudge this morning and will be covered I'm sure by most media the next few days. I know my listeners were outraged by it as I would think anyone would be. Another example of how liberal media will try to destroy anything that fit thier idea of what is right.
Iwo Jima Photo Disrespected By Time Magazine
By fred - Posted on April 18th, 2008
Oh, come on, Fred. It's a photo of what is undeniably an heroic moment in our history, but let's not set it up as some kind of "icon", a holy object to be venerated and worshiped. My God, if this is what it takes to outrage you and send your blood pressure through the roof, then you must be on meds all day long. We live in a free society, not a Stalinist government where state worship has replaced religion. Save your outrage for something worth being outraged about.
Great comment Pete, thanks for the input
That was a great comment by Pete. He's right. If this is the kind of issue that causes you "outrage", then perhaps you have anger management issues.
Btw, Time Magazine is hardly "liberal media".
Pete's assumption that I blew a gasket, raised my blood pressure or any other health issues he believes I may have suffered was incorrect so I saw no reason to try to discuss the issue with him any further. As for Time magazine being liberal I think a look at the last 20 years of coverage by Time would lead many to believe they are just that. But hey that's what the board is for right? To share various opinions. The sad part is so many people end up veering off into personal attacks and name calling instead of focusing on the topic, but I guess that happens everywhere.
Pete's assumption that I blew a gasket, raised my blood pressure or any other health issues he believes I may have suffered was incorrect
Well, you did use five exclamation marks. Five!!!!!
Yeh I know my finger got stuck on the key, lol. Hasn't that happened to anyone else??????
Don hartington, or ron Dardingdon, or whatever from
the Toledo View !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
**it happens !!!!!!!!!
If the marines came to Toledo to raise a tree, Carty'd take care of THAT little problem toot sweet!!
arguably ill-advised, certainly tone-deaf, certain to generate controversy and ill-will among vets and their families. In short, not really worth the grief you're gonna catch by running it.
That said, Fred, tying this in with some vast left-wing liberal media conspiracy is pure silliness.
What the hey, maybe you and WSPD are simply part of some vast right-wing conservative media conspiracy and we should simply treat your criticism of Carty, Ben Konop, Marcy Kaptur and labor unions as agenda-driven smoke, mirrors and noise?
LOL, that can't possibly be the case, now can it?
A theory worthy of the George Noory show to be sure.
Thanks for mentioning the best program on WSPD.
Is this disrespectful?

well done.
I hope you give equal (air) time to this...
I know my listeners were outraged by it as I would think anyone would be. Another example of how liberal media will try to destroy anything that fit thier idea of what is right.
I'm sure you and your listeners will be equally outraged by Lynne Cheney and the conservative media trying to destroy anything that fit their idea of what is right.
Most people I think would see a very clear difference in the two pictures. In this second one children are emulating the example of the Marines by raising the American flag very much a Rockwell type drawing. In the Time issue it is the statue or phot of the Marines who fought on Iwo Jima who are now having thier likenesses used to push the global warming agenda. You seem quite bright in many of your posts I'm suprised that needed an explanation.
Wow, it looks like Lynne Cheney is trying to say war is a game for children. How despicable....I'm outraged!
Good to see you back with a post. Long time no see.
Thanks McCaskey
for you late-comers to the local blogosphere, was one of my favs on the old Toledo Talk. Keep on posting, Pink.
Hey, Sensor, I think Fred is calling you stupid.
Fred, the only "very clear difference in the two pictures" is what YOU see in them. They are both takeoffs on a WWII photo and both have been altered to project someone else's vision and purpose. You like one and are outraged by the other. Why? Maybe because you don't like the one's politics but you do the other? Don't go getting all sanctimonious and hypocritical about the desecration of one and the acceptability of the other. Both are pushing agendas. YOU like one and YOU don't like the other. They are both doing the same thing, using a famous picture for their own ends.
I'm not too worried about what Fred thinks of me. Come Monday Brian Wilson or some right wing “news” source will tell him what to be outraged against next and we’ll move on.
Actually Monday would be a little late. I normally receive my right wing marching orders sometime around noon on Sunday, my White House e-mail in the late afternoon. If Carl Rove needs something mentioned he just calls my cell phone. The McCain newsletters come sporadically now but I'm sure will become more frequent as the battle for complete Republican power gets closer to November. I'm sure because of this post I'll be getting a late night visit from Dick Cheney now to set me straight. I'm glad you 're not worried about what I think of you, it's my philosophy also when it comes to people I don't know. Look there we have something in common, come to the dark side Sensor....I am your father. LOL
the douchebag that drew the blueprints for driving our country into the ground spells his name with a "K".
Please make a note of it.
Is the show and/or station not providing enough fulfillment in your life? You're posting an awful lot on here. Starting to worry about you.
We all do appreciate the 'new' Fred though, full of yucks and chuckles instead of venom. As much as well enjoy you, though, we'd rather have Maggie back. Tell her we miss her.
Hey, off topic, but curious: what was the reaction around the station about the Brian Wilson piece the local daily did a couple months back?
I'll try to answer all your questions McC. show/station is just a job. My fulfillment comes from my life outside of work. I hope yours does too. Don't worry about me though, save your concerns for family members. I will tell Maggie you miss her. When the Blade story broke we threw a massive party and everyone got bonuses. The only thing missing were the strippers and we couldn't get Irish to tell us how to find them.
Maggie we all say hello.
Bravo on your emphasis on family over work. Well done, sir ,and a tip of the cap.
Wonder why Mr. Wilson didn't just give his age when asked in the interview? What, he's afraid all the juicy parts will go to the younger actors? Strange one, that. A grown man willing to take on all hot-button issues and politicos around town (at least if they're Dems) but not willing to state his age for the record? Hmmmmm......if I call his show will he disclose all? Guess I need to ask him.
Well, Fred, it's been real.
The photo was altered, no arguing that - but the intent is what I'm looking at. If there was any attempt to mock the soldiers or the event that precipitated these men being at that place in time? I'd be ready to fight.
But that's not the case here - imo - the soldiers were used to represent those in an honorable fight by those who believe in that cause.
I personally do not subscribe to the global warming theory - and am well read on the topic - but the use of the photo was not intended to denigrate soldiers. Or it'd be go time.
And also, imo - I quit taking this magazine a decade ago because it is so liberal in the presentation of the stories. I would feel the same way if the slant were in the other directions. I'm just capable of drawing my own conclusions and I do not appreciate media or news outlets that treat me like a mindless sheep.
So I vote with my wallet and I don't buy their product.
I won't go so far as to say I feel 'outrage', but I do think Time magazine cheapened this historic event - diminished it in the same way if they used a photo of Iwo Jima or 911 to advertise cars on TV. (Although, I feel the same way whenever I hear a Stones or Zepplin song used to advertise cars or what have you on TV - I think 'sell out", and they've cheaped it all.) I personally don't buy into the whole global warming thing - I think it's a bit of a hoax in which Al Gore is making loads of money on, and people are going apeshit freaking out 'end of the world' over the fear mongering about it. That said, I think Time Magazine & the Global Warming group could have chosen a better icon to use. I guess the ones to ask, were those who saw Iwo Jima first hand.
That 's a huge mis-statement right there. We don't yet know the cause , if it is cyclical , man-made or not. Global temperature has been dropping again , according to Noash , the National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration. Global warming may be beneficial to the planet.
Anyone remember the island where the Marines raised the flag? Was it Guatemala? Anyway, we gave those Krauts a good what-for, didn't we?
What are the first two words in the title of this post?
that Don was just goofing around. Right, Don? Right??? Please tell us you're just goofin'....
