Renewables and Energy Efficiency in Ohio
Solar/Renewables
The Issue

Ohio has a rich history of innovation and manufacturing – a history that is interwoven with traditional resources like coal and natural gas. Though these sources of energy have helped to build a strong economy in Ohio in the past, too much of today’s economy – and military operations – depend on a single-source commodity: oil.

To protect our economic and national security, America must diversify and look to clean, homegrown alternatives like wind and solar.

Lucas County gets hush money from First Energy

Ok, a bit strong, but who ever bites the hand that feeds? This seems to be on the border of being appropriate, but with the brilliant "let's give recycling coupons" group of Carty and Joe McNamera (yes they are not county commissioners, but they are taking the money too) as a solution to fix the budget, you can tell most of our leaders are without ideas, so why not take money from First Energy? If I was intellectually bankrupt, I would too.

President-elect Barack Obama is pushing a massive federal investment in "green jobs." He speaks about these jobs as if they are something new under the sun. If it could, the sun would probably laugh at such hyperbole.

Automated Refuse Schedule to be Released
The city is on schedule to migrate to automated trash pick up by the end of 2009/beginning of 2010. However, I should know more about what areas of town will be implemented first. The schedule is being worked on and reviewed by the administration. Look for news to come out quite possibly in this month, I'm told.

This morning, Politico reported that Democratic members of Congress are increasingly being harassed by “angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior” at local town halls. These guys are hawking solar-hot-water systems for a "usual $8,000 to $9,000 cost"? And then have the nerve to claim that with subsidy and a tax break, that the buyer can knock that "in half"? Ooh, gee, what a deal it becomes then! {sarcasm} A 10-yr payback? Absurd. IT'S JUST THE SUN HEATING A LIQUID. And I bet that there's a maintenance cost in those 10 years that will push out the period.

Joe Biden and Obama's Birth Certificate

I drove my car (with my Beyond Babylon signs on it) to the site where Vice President Joe Biden was to speak in Perrysburg, Ohio and found most of the protesters were children, literally, holding signs in the very hot sun (I was reassured they were well hydrated). I'm not sure what their protest was about (if one of their leaders reads this, contact and let me know and I'll update this information).

National Black Chamber of commerce says Obama energy plan will cost jobs, hurt economy

NBCC President and CEO Harry Alford notes, “These findings add to a growing body of evidence that demonstrates cap-and-trade would make American consumers poorer and the products they buy more expensive.

“Moreover, the NBCC study finds there will be little, if any, environmental impact to justify the high price U.S. families will have to pay, since the trading system will deliver virtually negligible changes in global CO2 emissions so long as developing nations such as China and India don’t buy in.
