Home Prices Post Record Decline

D'ya think County Treasurer Kapszukiewicz will reduce property taxes after hearing this news? Not likely, but he should because many of our homes are overvalued for the property taxes we're paying.

A lot of homes aren't worth what people are paying on their mortgages or for what their market value is today. This economy could make the Dot.Com bust look like a piker and hit a lot more of us. A lot of good, hard-working people are going to go down the tubes over the next couple of years.

A change of administrations probably won't do much to change this either. The Republicans, who used to be the conservative party, have morphed into a free-spending, anything-goes, imperialist party and the wimpy Democrats are right behind them. Ron Paul looks to me to be the best choice as a libertarian, fiscally-conservative, get-the-hell-out, cut-down-the-guv'mt guy, but he doesn't have a snowball's chance. The next few years look bleak to me.

I don't see local, state or the federal government responding to these economic times. It's belt-tightening time. They should start retrenching and pulling back on spending or we're going to be in a peck of trouble. But they won't.

What the hell, I'll retire in a few years and all you go-getters can pay for my social security checks on those diminishing-American-dollar jobs you'll have. That's a depressing thought, but I'll think about you and thank you while I'm getting them.

...the county treasurer just collects the taxes. It's the auditor (Anita Lopez), based upon formulas, who actually appraises the property and the value.

As for the rest of your post - I don't think government (at any level) understands that they need to stop spending...

so, should we be calling anita lopez's office asking for an appraisal? how long does that take? I'm sure it's pretty speedy, like all government processes are.

We had our property taxes reduced years ago by the previous auditor, Larry Kazala. He was at Seagate Center and I believe it was the House & Home Show where he had a booth set up. We found out that we were being taxed on out buildings that we never had. I'm still trying to figure out where these out buildings could have been on a 130 by 40 foot lot.
Our house was built in 1867 and we were probably being taxed on farm land. If you look at what your being taxed on you might be surprised at what you find.
If I recall it did not take long at all and basically we said we don't have these buildings and they said OK, here's your reduction.

so, i looked up my house on the county site, and saw the value of it. it's not too much out there, but i know i could not sell it for that amount. how do i get another appraisal, what are the steps i need to take?

SherryET, how crazy you were taxed for out buildings! have you ever looked up your house at the library downtown to see photos of your house? i did last year, kind of fun to research. our house was built in 1917, not as old as yours, but still neat to have an old house. :)

D, You can contact the auditor at the auditor web site.
They will do a re-appraisal if yours is too high.
They re-appriased a house I own on the East Side. It dropped from 62k to 43 K , still too high

My house on the Library site is from around the early 50's late 60's I believe.
I have been told that a fire destroyed records from 1900 back. I can't recall the exact dates anymore. I do know there were 2 other owners prior to my great grandmothers purchase of the house in the 50's. Anything before the 1930's I can not find. I still have the capped off gas pipes where the gas lights used to be.

Contact the auditors office and ask about having your taxes reassessed. I'm not sure but I think there was a deadline to have that done this year. you may have to wait, but don't take my word for it, call and ask. (Hint) If you've done any extensive remodeling you may not want to ask for an appraisal, you may not like the answer. I'm not sayin' I'm just sayin'. ;)

i will call on Thursday. we plan on doing windows in the spring, so i'll do it now if i can, otherwise if i did miss the deadline i won't.

where does the value of the appraisal come from, i know it was stated it's based upon formulas, so could i try to sell my house for that amount? not that i'm planning on it, nothings moving, and i would end up owing anyway.

Well, the President just approved a budget with over 9,000 earmarks and more funding in the billions for Iraq and Afghanistan wars, more defense spending and on and on.
Maybe it is not the spending so much as it is what the spending is for.
There's enough blame for all the parties.
