get tested for HIV ?

The article says this will ' hopefully, encourage all northwest Ohioans to get tested for HIV".
I don't get it. If you are monogamous or celibate , you don't need an HIV test.
Sounds like a waste of money for most people, and for our community leaders

many people are not in that situation, or were not careful when they were younger. it's a very scary test to take, i took it 7 years ago when it took a week to get the results. 20 minutes is GREAT!

i've been talking to a very wild 18 year old to get tested, and now i know where and how much to tell her, so hopefully i can take her to get tested. thanks for pointing the article out. :)

if people were in monogamous relationships a didn't get suckered into the idea that sleeping around is cool and everyone is doing it, then this would not be such an issue. this of course is not the world we live in.

i think it's great that planned parenthood is putting out this challenge. i think most people should be tested. i think we should make it easier and not make it such of a taboo. it's kind of ironic, the media really hypes up sex, but not the possible consequences of it. how many bed hopping characters on tv live with hiv/aids? not many i'm sure.

Is that while you may believe you're in a monogamous relationship, your significant other may not share the same feelings. I know of one person who contracted HIV because of her husband's affair, so it's never a bad idea to get tested even if you are married.

it is sad to hear stories like that, where one person is not faithful.

i wonder how many 16- 24 year olds have been tested, and tested on a regular basis if they are sleeping around.? i've heard, and i can't remember where i heard it from, but this area having a high population of hiv. it scares me to think having children of my own.

I wonder if we had univ. health care these tests would be free ?

sbashara.... how do you equate universal health care as something that is free?

the test should be taken. it's been free for years.

littlered... perhaps you missed my point.

When you had your HIV test, you apparently did not have to pay for it. But somebody did. So, if you are not the one who paid for it, do you know who did?

it most likely was paid by the government, but i pay my taxes and have health insurance, so i pay into the system. i would have taken the test through my dr, but a clause in my insurance said if i did so, they could have dropped my coverage, or my rates would possibly go up because they felt i was at a higher risk. i figured it was best to find out, and have the tax payers pay for it, than to possibly be without health insurance. so, to answer your question, indirectly I DID pay for it. does that satisfy you?

Yes, it does satisfy my curiosity... thank you for responding, littlered.

So many people feel that universal health care would be "free". I'm glad you understand it is not free after all.

and if they aren't going to be penalized, to get it done via their dr, otherwise through a place like planned parenthood. if we tested most of the people, then we could get a real handle on the problem. if we are not encouraging people to get tested and turning a blind eye, then it will get worse for everyone. i'm not afraid, or ashamed to talk about it. i'm ashamed for my reasons for taking the test in the first place, but i'm glad i did. i feel the public needs to get over the taboo of this disease, and many others like it.
