D.S.,
Why buy when they're free? Anybody can get a library card and check out good stuff. I've long felt that people who go to these Friends book buys are regular library users who harbor a sense of guilt for having access to a wonderful array of books and feel they owe it to the T-LCPL to purchase some hardcover crap for which they have no intention other than filling space on book shelves. I can get anything I want through our library system. I certainly don't need to go to bookstores, despite the cache some believe they have by being seen in public actually "buying" a book. At the same time, most library lovers feel no compulsion to buy the junk literature that the library is trying to get rid of. Got library card, will travel.
I like being able to read a book at my convenience without having to worry about getting it back on time. Some books I like to keep, and re=read much later, others I'll just read once and give away to someone. I got over fifty bucks worth of good books for a five-spot last time, and none of it was junk. But I do see your point, I just won't live at the library.
