"Columbia Gas of Ohio said Friday it will
temporarily vacate its local operations center in downtown Toledo by
June, sparking a sharp reaction from Mayor Finkbeiner.
“If
Columbia Gas goes to a temporary headquarters and/or permanent
headquarters anywhere but Toledo, World War III will erupt in Columbus
and Toledo,” the mayor said in a written statement."

I hope Columbia Gas moves to the Suburbs. I really want to see Carty go nuts!!
Well, let's see. He accused the Electric Company of killing 3 children and their mother last week and now he's after CG for WWIII?? If he didn't already run the water department he'd be after them too. This is a stellar policy to assist the citizens of Toledo with their utility concerns?? Brandish verbage and insults and accusations that are going to do little other than bait them in to giving Good Ole' Boy, Carty a run for his money. Perhaps both companies will cut off his utilities ;-)
Columbia Gas is just shakin' in their boots!
I'm enjoying this.
On behalf of people who have had their gas shut off repeatedly because Columbia Gas doesn't hire techs who can read, I say rage on Carty. In fact, I want to see Carty act now, preferably by sending TPD down to the Columbia Gas building to ruff up the staff a bit.

First Press Release (in its entirety and as received):
“I have spoken to Jack Partridge, Columbia Gas President and Chris Kozak locally. If Columbia Gas goes to a temporary headquarters and/or permanent headquarters anywhere but Toledo, World War III will erupt in Columbus and Toledo.
Toledo citizens and businesses have been very generous and loyal to Columbia Gas over the years, and that loyalty must be returned. I am confident, after my conversation with President Partridge, it will!”
Second Press Release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 7, 2007
“The statement regarding Columbia Gas is strong because it is meant to emphasize the importance of this issue to Toledo and its citizens. The statement is not to be understood as detrimental towards Columbia Gas. It is simply meant to express the fact that protecting the interests of our citizens is our primary objective. We are committed to not losing an important employer and contributor in our community.
Our conversations with Columbia Gas have been very positive and they have indicated their desire to stay in Toledo and work closely with the Mayor’s Office to accomplish this mutual goal.”
Mayoral speak and then when a handler or two read or heard what the Mayoral speak said, the instructions on how to interpret what the statement was put out.
Speaking out with prepared comments does him in.
Sorta like the Lil Ceasar's pizza boycott he proposed.

Columbia Gas has a property-tax abatement that's about to expire?
**
Does anyone else find the timing of this statement to be disturbing, since December 7th was our start of WWII?
Me thinks Scout stayed home today. That's a good doggie.
It's ironic how Carty was playing up regionalism recently while in London for the UN's "Most Livable City" award, and now he's saying anywhere except Toledo proper is unacceptable for Columia Gas. If he's going to say Toledo has windpower generators like he did in London recently (he was referring to Bowling Green), then he should be completely satisfied with Columbia Gas locating to Bowling Green or Perrysburg or Maumee as well. After all, according to Carty, Bowling Green and all of the suburbs are part of Toledo, or at least they were while he was in London.
Czarlton speaks from all four corners of his mouth.
So when does the draft start? Can anyone enlist, or do we have to be a Toledo resident?
The draft started some time ago. All Toledoans who pay tax to Government Center already send little soldiers called "dollars" which will fight (and be consumed) in this war.
Czarty's has run out of options, since he can't just continue to throw money at corporations (either way, directly (payments) or indirectly (abatements)) without endangering city services further. Another big check sent to Dillin would force open Toledo's cracks quite a bit more.
I've been told that the Columbia Gas Erie Street property near the Erie Street Market has a very serious groundwater contamination problem, and its spreading. Maybe that's why they want to move so that their employees won't get exposed to the toxic ground water goodies and toxic gases. Since they are near the Erie Street Market, I wonder if anyone has conducted any enviromental studies to determine the impact on the Erie Street Market Businesses and customers.
There's a creek that BORDERS that site. If the groundwater is contaminated, then that creek must be also.
Since ground water usually travels toward bodies of water that's a possibility, but I really don't know how horizontal or vertical the contamination is.
