Fencing question

Tagged:  •    •

I noticed this morning that my neighbor acorss the street seems to be in the midst of putting up one of those wooden privacy fences, in her front yard. She's already got 4 poles sunk and holes dug at intervals for the rest of them.
Am I wrong in thinking that those fences are a bozo no-no for front yards?
I always thought they were backyard things.
I'm thinking that no matter how well it's put up it's just going to look tacky as hell, this one home on the block with a six foot barricade around it.
As far as I know theres been no trouble with any neighbors. The women who live in the house are always friendly and say hello.

Here's what I got off the city's site: http://www.ci.toledo.oh.us/index.cfm?Article=777. There may be more regulation involved. I have wooden fencing on my rental property across the street. I have fence that is 3.5 feet in the front (as the code says). I may still be in the wrong. No one has complained (for which I am thankful). I don't like the look of metal fence, but one time a "neighbor" (during a confrontation with my younger brother over some personal issue) kicked the rickety fence down part of its length. He fancied himself a martial arts expert, and did some damage (both to the fence and his leg). So if I had my druthers, the money, and the city's okay I would rather use chain length fence even though it isn't very aesthetic.

From what I understand the public safety officials prefer we have shorter fences in front so that they can see if anything suspicious is occuring in our yards. I had a renter move in who wanted to fence the backyard with tall wooden fence.

I had chain length across the side, and a tall chain length fence in the back with natural brush interlaced with it (but also that if someone stopped they could see through). My brother had done this when he lived there because he had a dog kennel that he rotated between the rear of the yard, and the side.

Anyways I miss the chain length. I have had break-ins before when I lived there (I owned no dog), but when my brother lived there he had none. After my renter put up the wooden fence it shielded any criminal activity from prying eyes on two sides of the yard. I had several breakins in my property after that. I think a "privacy" fence may give a person privacy, but it also gives a criminal privacy to do his business, too.

Thanks for the reply. I don't mind a wooden fence, its just that these posts are quite a bit more then 3.5 ft. Without actually going over and measureing them I'd guess that they are 6' which I think is fairly standard for those privacy fences. Although I could be wrong.
