Yes it does suck but its not like they are just being tossed out on the street over night. They were given 90 days notice so its not like they haven't known this was coming.
The managements already said that they won't be tossed for one violation. The article actually says "tenants will not be “automatically” evicted for smoking in their apartments after Jan. 1. If caught, they will be issued a notice of noncompliance. After getting three of those, further disciplinary measures will be taken, though she would not say what sort of measures."
I'd say if you get to that third warning you really can't act surprised if you get an eviction notice.

If you're renting you have to put up with all kinds of rules for what can and cannot happen in your building/unit. .

The owners have every right to decide that they don't want smoking to happen in certain areas. An argument thats been used here many times when posting that local business owners here in town should be allowed to decide if smoking will be allowed in their establishment.

Sure I'd be pissed if I was a smoker and lived there but thats the way shit happens when you're a renter. You don't have 100% control over your space when you're renting it from someone else.
