Interesting interviews are transpiring on the Troy Neff Show pertaining to the racial tensions in Toledo.
Check out this audio when Troy asks Art Jones (former city council member) "Do you believe the mayor discriminates against blacks?"

I don't think he does. Carty is just an asshole to everyone. He'll treat you like shit regardless of your color.

I couldn't haved said it better myself. I don't believe for a second that his action was racially motivated.
I don't have a hard time believing that Carty is a racist.
Do I think that these particular firings were racially motivated? Hard to say - I agree that Carty treats people in general like crap. (Guess that's one area where Carty doesn't discriminate...white, black, or rainbow colored, Carty is equal opportunity when it comes to being a jackass. Sigh.)
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. If its true that there was probable cause for bias, then shame on Carty. The last thing that Toledo needs is another cloud hanging over it.
As much as people don't care much for Jack Ford either, its a shame he didn't win the last election. At least there wouldn't be as much scandal going on right now. (Even though the ideal situation would have been someone completely different, Jack still would have been better than Carty.)
The guy actually allows his "guests" and "callers" to "run down". He allows them to finish their presentation before he puts his "two cents worth" in. He asks questions that actually pertain to the flow of the dialogue. He's not an "entertainer".
He actually allows information to be dessiminated. He's unlike most "conservatives". This person actually provides some facts. Shouldn't he be like Le Fabre (?), and dismissing all opinion coming from the other side of the argument? Boy, this guy just doesn't understand how to be a "good" conservative.
for some level of unacceptable performance in a governmental position and they are people of color there is an almost automatic claim of racial discrimination. If the facts are true one of the people in this most recent racial discrimination claim refused to carry out the request of her employer. Another person was let go for failure to be at work and the third was let go because the city was downsizing his department and he had the least seniority
I also find the filing of this claim and the reappearance of Rev. Floyd Rose on the scene to be interesting. Not to mention one of the investigators of the claim is suppose to be a personal friend of one of the claimants.
Of course having said all this I have to keep everything in perspective after all we live in Toledo Ohio where the unusual is common place.
... it has given me a reason to vote against every tax or levy at the local level. I figure all my contributions will be wasted on settlements of discrimination lawsuits. I feel I will vote only for "persons of color" from now on, and accept any unintended consequences.
At least any taxes collected are likely to go to lower-wage employees than coddled middle-class "managers". Hopefully, enough fires that we don't have enough manpower to fight will occur in older areas of the city to allow buidling new neighborhoods that will attract back the middle class. Fire can be a wonderful thing for urban renewal. My street looks like a gap-toothed old man from the air with every other house burned out. A few more fires and there will be room for a big house for an upper middle-class family with a large yard.
Stop saying things like that, or Kwame Kilpatrick will be heading down here when (if) his political career in Detroit is over. Yikes!
Kilpatrick as Mayor of Toledo! I don't think we deserve that no matter how many times we re-elect Carty. Detroit deserves his kind of leadership. He also makes Toledo look more attractive.
I think that is not the case here - predominantly b/c while Carty inherited a pretty healthy (more healthy than current) mix of people coming into office - he now has a white, male cabinet.
Coincidence? I think not.
olsouthend - I can see why you're having the feelings you are, I just think we need to get past the point of looking at the outside of the candidates (if any are brave enough to run against the Blade) and find someone who's qualified and can look at our city to see it's needs. Someone who's willing to meet with community leaders, drive around and look for themselves and not rely on others' representation of the problem.
In all honesty if our Mayor would spend a half a day driving around in the industrial areas that used to house thousands of jobs and the housing areas around them - he'd know exactly what our problems are. Maybe then he'd show up at a council meeting and tell them to drop everything and have a discussion about how to bring those jobs backs and put families back into those houses.
That is the only thing that can turn Toledo around and make your neighborhood better.
...it's just the way it is. The problem with Toledo's inner city is that it is filled with the poor. Can anyone dispute Carty's remark that 2/3's of services from police and fire occur in the neighborhoods around the down-town. The only way to stop that is to make it uninhabitable to the poor. That won't happen until it is burned down. And that won't happen until we defeat the 3/4% income tax, and there isn't enough money to provide fire and police protection. Hopefully, that time is coming thanks to Rev. Rose. In less than a generation there would be new housing out of reach of the poor. Toledo would return to being a middle-class sanctuary, and maybe the poor would move to Holland.
Just curious, but were there any white men and women who were laid off due to last year's budget cuts? There weren't just three black people, because that doesn't save you from an $11 million deficit. SO, were there any white people, from janitor to department head, that got canned?
Might I say also that Troy Neff is one hell of a classy guy on the radio. Someone who actually allows conversation to take place over the airwaves and respects differing opinions.
whether it is race related or not.
Carty is just a hardball politico, to his own detriment. He will have a negative legacy for sure.
