Congratulations to Mayor Derek Merrin

I see Derek Merrin beat incumbant Chuck Peyton in the race for Waterville Mayor. Particularly impressive since Derek is 21 years old! What a race.

Ordinarily, I'm flat against people THIS young running things, but having checked his web page, he has some damned great ideas. Now if hwe can only implement them.

Mayor Peyton should be proud of himself as he ran a clean campaign. The race was pretty close and, as a supporter of Mayor Peyton, I am proud of his accomplishments and thank him for the service that he has provided to Waterville.

People fell for Mr. Merrin's lines such as "As Mayor, I will not increase taxes." Unfortunately, the Mayor cannot control this, taxes are voted on by the council. I am grateful that there is a strong council in place to potentially keep Mr. Merrin in check.

We will see what the next four years bring to the Village.

Again, thank you, Mayor Peyton, for all you have done for the people of Waterville and the surrounding area.

Well said, MaumeeMom. And I agree. This was a sad result.

Congrats to Mayor Derek Merrin.
The fact that a man 50 years younger could knock off a 71 year old, multi-time incumbent, in an affluent, growing town like Waterville is a testament to Mr. Merrin and his qualifications. There is a new generation of leaders being bred and people can either choose to get on board or go down with the status quo.

I think it is great that Derek Merrin is the next mayor of Waterville. It is great that a young man like Derek has worked hard on the Village Council and that his community were proud of the job he did. I think he will be a great mayor for the village of Waterville. He is a great conservative as well.

the young mayor can stay out of trouble by avoiding Myspace and Facebook which Hillsdale's young mayor Mr. Sessions had trouble with. It's called "Maturity" and I question if a 21 year old has yet to develop the level needed to run a city. We shall see...

Michael Sessions' youth earned him national publicity in 2005 as he
became one of the youngest mayors in the United States.

On Tuesday, the 19-year-old mayor of Hillsdale blamed his youth for
garnering the wrong type of attention -- a misdemeanor conviction.

A day earlier, Sessions pleaded no contest to sending an e-mail under
someone else's name to the mother of a former friend, accusing him of
drinking and running around with women.

In return for the plea, prosecutors dropped a more serious charge: that
Sessions had hacked into the friend's MySpace and America Online
accounts to delete his lists of personal contacts with their addresses
and phone numbers.

Peyton belongs out to pasture. Good reddens to Waterville

I respectfully disagree with you.

I believe the people duped were those that fell for Mr. Merrin's "claims".

I will not turn this into a debate thread as nothing will be accomplished by bickering with some anonymous person via blogs. For all I know you are Derek's mother - or even Derek himself hiding behind a pseudonym.

Good luck to Mr. Merrin, I hope that he can live up to his promises.

PS, Diane, it is "riddance" not "reddens". Maybe improving the school system should be the first thing on Mr. Merrin's to do list.

For all we know, MaumeeMom is Chuck Peyton himself hiding behind a pseudonym. It wouldn't be the first time that Mr. Peyton hid behind an alias of a female blasting Mayor Elect Merrin.

Congrats to Mr. Merrin. He showed he wanted the job more then Peyton and the voters of Waterville rewarded him for it.

I am sure Derek is too busy celebrating to be debating on local blogs. However I am really impressed with this victory. Derek was a city councilman, meaning voters got to evaluate his record...and still made the decision to elect him over a long-time incumbant.

Your first entry has a spelling error...maybe they should improve Maumee schools as well.
