Here's a novel way to resolve the office conflict between smokers and non-smokers: fire
the non-smokers. Companies do it to smokers. Is turn-about fair play?
The way the smoking law is written in Ohio, citations are complaint-driven. If nobody complains, then no smoking infractions can be written. Now, if somebody can just figure out how to make sure that only customers who smoke are allowed to enter a bar, the problem of being penalized for smoking in bars will be solved. :-)
It's entirely fair. Business owners should be able to hire and fire employees for any reason they choose.
Like being gay, getting pregnant, finding out someone is Jewish, not willing to sleep with you or you voted for the "other side" in a primary...
They can as most people are at will employees unless of course they have a signed agreement or contract.
It's entirely fair. I'd like to see more of this kind of behavior in Ohio.

By them losing their job their boss did them a big favor and guaranteed them cancer free lungs.

However, that solitary act, by itself, will not GUARANTEE the person cancer-free lungs. There will still remain dim-witted, uneducated and self-centered
people that are totally oblivious to the negative effects that their behavior has on other people.

You propose concentration centers for smokers and you wonder why people claim you are the Smoking Nazi's.
Maybe we should round up all those who vote away our freedom of choice and personal responsibilities and send them away to Re-Education Centers until such time that they understand Capitalism and Democracy or just exile them to some Socialist State.
CraZyKitten, if you will reread my post, you will see that I did not propose the creation of 'concentration' centers.
The use of that inflammatory term reminds people of 'concentration' camps. It is a deliberate attempt on your part to obscure the meaning of my argument in favor of re-educating people that are obstinate in their behavior, and refuse to modify that behavior so as to not offend or assault others.

I would suggest you Google 'All I ever really needed to know I learned in kindergarten' and you will see the areas that people like darkseid need to be re-educated on. I am assuming they got this information in kindergarten, and somehow, lost it. Hence the need for 're-education'.
Examples include;
SHARE EVERYTHING - People like darkseid walk into a room and act like all the fresh air is HIS to pollute.
PLAY FAIR - Ever hear of a smoker walking into a room and inquiring if anyone present has a heart or respiratory condition that would be aggravated by their smoking indoors?
DON'T HIT PEOPLE - Assaulting someone's respiratory system is the same as assaulting them with your hands.
CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS - need I mention cig butts that are so nonchalantly tossed on every road, sidewalk, public park, etc. with the built-in expectation that SOMEONE ELSE will pick up after them?
DON'T TAKE THINGS THAT AREN'T YOURS - That clean air in a room or building does NOT belong to you, darkseid. You share it. And since you can not separate YOUR air that you desire to pollute with carcinogenic smoke from the air that belongs to others, you take your filthy self-absorbed freaking habit outside.
SAY YOU ARE SORRY WHEN YOU HURT SOMEONE -
All those helpless innocent children inside of cars with their smoking parents. They have no where to go - Do they ever hear an 'I'm sorry' from the smoker who controls their environment? And smokes to control their anxiety, instead of learning other methods ?

Sure sounds like brain washing concentration camps to me. (re-read that last line up there). The smoke haters seem to not want to see that just because a privately owned business invites the public in, the public is NOT compelled or required to BE THERE or ENTER. Smoking bans grossly infringe on the rights of a private business owner to run his/her business as he/she chooses - to allow (or not) legal activities in that business. The public always had the right to CHOOSE to enter, or NOT - pre smoking ban. This smoking ban is a carbon copy of Hitler's, right out of his playbook (you can look it up). Hitler was the first to promote a smoking ban, I believe. I'm not going to re-hash all this again - anybody who wants to find the truth about the shs studies, can easily find them in the archives here & on toledotalk. Not only did NONE Of them prove shs causes disease or death, most were thrown out of court for being poorly run, manipulated, etc. I believe the surgeon general has been charged in court regarding this. At any rate - by Hitler's playbook, next in line was fat & unhealthy people, booze, etc. Our country tends to run in 60 -80 year cycles of puritanism (also proven) - and we are in one now.
Not being around shs does not guarantee you won't get lung cancer - many people have died of lung cancer who never smoked, or were around shs. In fact, studies now show that obese people are more likely to get cancer than smokers. Also, some people are pre-disposed to getting cancer, genetics - others are not. You're exposed to about 60,000 known carcinagens daily - take your pick on what will kill you first. Sunlight is a biggie. Household cleansers are more apt to cause cancer than smoking (try cleaning the tub yourself in a closed windowless bathroom if you worry about the little wife's health). I am so weary of smoke nazi's thinking they found their 'cure' - to live forever - because they passed this smoking ban. Nobody died or got a disease over shs - I defy you to name a name & show proof of death. In fact, some studies of non-smoking bartenders who worked in smokey bars for years, showed that at most, they "consumed" less than one cigarette a year. So I highly doubt that 2 hours in a restaurant that has a separate smoking section is going to kill you. When backed up against the wall - smoke nazi's always fall back on "well, we don't like how it smells". And for that, you think it's allright to strip the freedoms & rights of private business owners who've invested THEIR money, sweat, reputations on the line. Get over your damned selves & stop being such prissy, sterile, pansy-assed sissies who have sex with dust masks on. The restaurant line cook who grills your steak or hamburger is ingesting MORE carcinagens than if he smoked a cigarette. It ain't about the employees. And if I hear one more person say 'it's for the kids" I'll scream. I am so sick of this world being adjusted 'for the damned kids'. Nobody's kids are going to get cancer or die because they were around shs for a couple hours in a restaurant. If you're worried that much, you always had the choise to go someplace smoke free or with a separate, enclosed smoking section (pre-ban). Kids today are so coddled & babied, it's disqusting (12 rules for a school playground in N.Y. - one of them is 'no running'. Another is 'no tag' because it singles a kid out. ) Look back at your grandparents who grew up just fine with what they were subjected to as kids. I'm out of this thread, it's been done to death.
