I thought one of you might have picked this story up, it's been the topic of conversation on several blogs. I didn't see it posted so thought I'd let you know, Cleveland Clinic has announced that starting September 1 anyone who smokes will not be hired as an employee.

My company doesn't hire other types of addicts; I guess shouldn't be any different...
Smokers at my company now have to smoke in their cars. We've had a few days in the mid-90s with high humidity and you still people sit in their cars every few hours for a smoke - admittedly I don't understand addiction, but...
The next step will be to demand DNA testing to ascertain whether your genes are potentially defective and you may require expensive treatment at some future time. Alcohol will also be next. By the way, we're ALL addicts of some substance or another: caffeine, alcohol, food, candy, junk food, or whatever. Name your poison: sex, TV, talk radio, fast driving, taking chances. I get tired of the holier-than-thou people who "don't understand addiction". Examine yourself, CensorG. There's SOMETHING you do that you really like doing and it probably isn't the healthiest thing for you. Hey, we may take it away from you some day.
What do you suppose will be next?
When companies of all sizes refused to hire or promote women with children, the outcry was deafening. Ditto with discrimination due to race, age or sexual orientation (no faggots at work policy).
So I guess some discriminations are OK and others are not. I'm kind of wondering what all those anti-smokers are going to do once tobacco is finally classified as a controlled substance and casual use has ceased. Who will they find to hate then?
I agree with Pete. DNA testing will be a regular, accepted practice in a few years.

I think Michigan has one, but I'm not sure. I know a bill was introduced a few years ago after that Michigan company fired all smokers on their payroll unless they quit.
