Rev. Al Sharpton To Lead Citywide “Slowdown” And “Pray In” Tomorrow
• Reverend Al Sharpton will lead a citywide "pray-in" tomorrow at six locations around New York City.
• Participants in tomorrow’s "pray-ins" should be prepared to go to jail to protest the acquittals of the three detectives.
• Sharpton said he hopes the acts of civil disobedience will continue until an eventual citywide day to shutdown NYC later this spring.
• The “pray-ins” will begin at 3PM.

So the Right Reverend Al Sharpton is going to lead a demonstration in the NYC... so what? What does he hope to achieve? The three police detective who shot that young man to death have been found not guilty. Given that double jeopardy applies and the JBTs can't be re-tried, any jail time for this crime is no longer possible. Rev. Sharpton hasn't issued any demands that I've seen or heard about, so what's the point of the demonstration?
This is what Sharpton hopes to achieve....
"They will do whatever it takes to get justice in the name of Sean Bell, even get arrested by way of non-violent civil disobedience," said Rachel Noerdlinger, spokeswoman for Sharpton's National Action Network.

Lets just hope he doesnt instigate any more arson and murder this time - ala Freddy's Fashion Mart...
bishop - I hope Sharpton, et al, will also plan to be leading 'pray ins' for those police who were killed in the line of duty, when the shooters/crack heads/possibly blacks were the ones who wrongly shot & killed said police officers. I find it interesting, that these 'wrongs' only seem to apply when it is blacks who've been 'wronged' by whites - but the opposite happens an awful lot too - where whites have been 'wronged' by blacks - and Sharpton, et al, are no place to be found & don't give a damn.
And, like our 'sit ins' protesting the Vietnam War, these pray ins won't accomplish a damned thing - except to possibly incite riots & arson - angry because their 'pray in' didnt accomplish a damned thing, just riled people up.

Starling....
No one deserves to to be shot and killed when they are unarmed, and on their wedding day! NO ONE....I DON'T CARE IF YOUR BLACK, WHITE, RED, PURPLE WITH BLUE STRIPS...NO ONE DESERVES THIS!!!!!
The police fired 50 shots killing Sean Bell, an unarmed black man on his wedding day.
Starling, please do not try to turn this into a race issue of black and white, as it is not a race issue...IT IS AN ISSUE OF INJUSTICE.
On March 16, 2007, a Queens grand jury voted to indict three detectives in the case, charging the two who had fired the bulk of the shots,Detective Michael Oliver and Detective Gescard F. Isnora, with first-degree and second-degree manslaughter, and the third, Detective Marc Cooper, with reckless endangerment.
Starling......I would submit to you that 2 of the police officers named above were black.
bishop - ok, you're right, I jumped the gun so to speak. It's just that whenever Sharpton shoots his mouth off, it is something he's turned into a racial thing - even when it's not. And I've never heard him go to the defense in cases where the people's races were turned around - where it was black against white, even when the cases are practically similar. This time - yes, I shot my mouth off prematurely. Apologies.
at this massacre. One black, one white and one hispanic police officer.
No problem Starling.
IT IS AN ISSUE OF INJUSTICE.
I think it goes further than that. These officers fired a total of 50 shots. One officer actually reloaded and continued to fire on the victims. Now, I'm a gun owner and I practice regularly. I can shoot, and I'm good at it, and that's not a brag; it's a fact. The fastest I can shoot, even with a specially constructed low recoil handgun, and actually hit anything smaller than Lake Erie is about one shot per second or a little less. Look at the clock and count off six seconds, and you'll realize that those police had plenty of time to realize that the victims were not shooting back, and in fact displayed no weapon.
Those police were enraged because the victims were not showing them the proper amount of fear when confronted by authority. In their rage they shot and killed and continued to shoot in order to mutilate the bodies of the dead, to send a message to the rest of the civilians that the police, the almighty police, are to be feared above all else.
Al Sharpton and the families of the victims won't get justice, any more than the victims in Lima, Ohio will get justice. It isn't going to happen this year, and I'm not giving odds on the next. What might happen is that some kind of civil rights movement against the current police departments across the United States will begin to organize and eventually, after many more demonstrations, beatings, arrests and trials the Federal government may move to reign in violent, corrupt police departments across the country. It isn't likely, but it's possible.
is white, according to the media.
Since jeopardy has attached there doesn't really seem to be much that they can do. Sure they can call for the officers to lose their jobs but since they were found not guilty the union would likely block any job loss, so that pretty much just leaves the widow getting a nice lump sum of money from NYC which a pray in by Sharpton won't matter a wit anyways.
... with the practice, the officers can be brought to court again under CIVIL procedure, charged with violating the civil rights of the victim. Fairly famously, it happened to OJ Simpson, and in the second trial he was found guilty of violating the civil rights of his two victims, and was fined some colossal amount as a result.
This allegedly doesn't violate Double Jeopardy since the first case was a CRIMINAL procedure, and the second was a CIVIL one.
Mad jack....you are absoluetely correct.
Purnhrt, I think you are right as well...after checking other media sources, I think the officers may have been black, white, and hispanic.
All the media sources (news outlets in NYC) seem to have conflicting stories, with each of them having there own unique spin on what exactly happened.
