What ever happened with the Robo Trash trucks?

Tagged:  •    •

The automated trash pick up trial seems to have slipped from the news. I was wondering if anyone has heard how it went or how its going. It seemed like it was such big news for a while and then *poof* it was gone.

I'm curious to hear how it worked out on the narrow side streets and if they plan to expand the trial to other areas.

We did the first round of recycling last week. I enjoy it. The trucks really move down the streets. The cans are so big, we did not put out the regular trash last week because it seemed foolish to do with only 10% full. We don't produce that much trash on a weekly basis.

if I understand correctly, because you you may not generated enough recyclables ( I assume this because you only generated 10% full trash cans) to qualify  via some observation or Radio Frequency Identification Tags (RDIF) reading you may be considered not contributing and be charged the additional trash fee. Is this correct?

- Just the KAT, thinking out loud again.

First, I don't see any RFID chips on the can so I don't think they are tracking.

Secondly, I don't think the City has a problem with the regular trash, they want the recycling. We did not put out our regular trash. We filled up our current recycling can quite well since it is so large and we could put our boxes in it, which we were holding onto. I guess we will still need to put the recycling out although I believe you are allowed to skip one time.

Chris, why do you assume you'd SEE the chip? RFID proponents have been marketing them to clients for some time for their ability to be undetectable, by embedding. The RFID chip "on" the container can be literally IN the plastic wall of the container.

The only way to know is if you note the manufacturer of the container, the type of container and the company who now owns them, and call up the manufacturer and ask if there's RFID embedded.

I believe there's an organization that tracks RFID embeddings for just such consumer service. I've long forgotten their name, but googling should help.

What is it that they are looking for with that tag? That you are using the can or is it checking the weight to make sure you're not putting out an empty can? Is there a certain weight they are looking for?

Scant news or updates on the city web site.

I saw these trucks running down in Lima last month. They were moving pretty quickly, and it appeared they could do the job with a single person. After the up front costs of buying the truck it appeared much more cost-effective than the current steup.

I love the bins, and the ease of rolling them down the driveway. We haven't had any problems with the trucks dropping trash or anything of that sort.
