Westgate, Grinnell's

Tagged:  •    •    •

Not sure if I should be in the North T. group or West Toledo. I used to live on Rambo Lane (near Secor-Sylvania intersection), went to Monac Elem. and Whitmer High, but have lived in Tennessee since 1974. I was just reminiscing and wondering if Westgate (Secor at Central, I think?) was still operating, then found the posts about Starbuck's there. In the late 1960's, we used to do a lot of business with a store named Grinnell's, which sold TV's, stereos, pianos. Wonder if anyone remembers it? The Westgate store was a branch; the main Grinnell's store was downtown, and they had another branch in Napoleon. What's Westgate like now?

Westgate was recently and dramatically overhauled. To see it now you would not recognize most of it. Lion/Dillards is gone. There is a huge Costco in its place. Most of the smaller shops are gone. The parking lot has been restructured and there are store fronts out near Central. Where before it was a blank horizon to the North. Stein Mart is big there. Starbucks. And this towns most nortorious box store RiteAid is right in the middle of everything. I still don't shop there. If I do any mall shopping it is at Franklin Park. Yes people I still call it Franklin Park not Westfield at...

Thanks for kindly taking the time to reply to my post. Yes, all the stores have changed, I suppose. We never shopped there much, either; it was mostly for business with Grinnell's - we used to deliver and service all the TV's and stereos Grinnell's sold all over Northwest Ohio. Mostly we shopped at Miracle Mile. Later, I returned to Toledo (after being in the Army) for a year in 1973, lived in an apartment on Royer near Franklin Park, and worked at Norb Wells TV on Laskey Road. Good times! Thanks again!

Yes, the whole South West side of the intersection is new.

You can get a glimpse by visiting Google's Street view. Just click on the link below, then choose the street view button and you can travel up and down Secor and Central to see how it looks from a car.

Thank you so much for the link to Google street view. I had heard of it, but I thought it was just for tourist cities like New York, Paris, etc. Wow!! It covers almost every street in Toledo - so I was up til 2 AM playing.
I was right about the intersection, but, over the years, somehow in my mind I had flip-flopped Westgate onto the Northeast corner, and I really had a hard time adjusting to the reality! My Dad's old TV shop on Sylvania (near Jackman) is now just a parking lot. Too bad! Wish I had a late-1960's phone book so I could find Grinnell's downtown address. Anyway, thanks again! I still have a few more places to tour; My Dad and I did thousands of TV service calls, 1953-1969, all over Toledo (mostly in the North and West areas, but also the East Side and Point Place, Maumee, Perrysburg, etc.), so I've been in all the Toledo neighborhoods. Good memories!

it was only for the big cities. Recently in the last couple of weeks, Google added Toledo, so you are lucky:)

I have another question, this time about a little one-story building on Clegg Dr. near Whitmer H.S. I graduated from Whitmer in 1966, and went to middle school at Jefferson M.S. There's a small building on Clegg Dr. across the street from Jeff. M.S. that I can't identify on Google Street View. It's opposite Lyceum Drive, but it's on Clegg. When I was in middle school, I sometimes waited in the buliding for a ride home, and I seem to remember that it was a tiny branch library, but it's not listed in the Lucas Co. Library system. Maybe it's a little community center? Does anyone know? Thanks!

MAJOR mistake in my recent post:
Building in question is NOT on Clegg Dr.; it's on west side of Whitmer Dr. at Lyceum Place. Has a tiny parking lot and a picnic table on its north side, and big plate glass windows on the north wall.
