Toledo Fire ambulances net $1M in 1st year

Private transport firms report job losses

After just one year in business, the Toledo Fire Department's basic life-support ambulances have transported 8,580 patients to local hospitals and generated a little more than $1 million for the city's general operating fund.

The operation, which began last September in an effort to improve patient care, has run relatively smoothly with fewer problems than expected, Fire Chief Mike Wolever said.

"The city has no business getting into the private sector."

Unless of course, there is profit in the city owned business,
