What motivates our mayor? Power. He feeds on the rush he gets from being in front of the camera, in front of a crowd, in front of a project. When he's not, he's petulant, vindictive, angry, abusive.
Since taking office he has failed to increase the police force, been forced to settle for delays on Southwyck and Marina District. He's been told no by the Municipal Court, been charged with civil rights violations, and accused of verbal abuse by Patsy Scott.
COSI has closed, ESM is a failure, and FEDEX is leaving. All in all not a good showing for the mayor. He does have a third place finish in a contest sponsored by the United Nations, and a bike path a block from his house.
Knowing the Blade won't back him again, and realizing the Governor won't name him to anything of importance he needs a future. Enter the Port Authority.
The mayor claims to have been working for 28 months on the intermodal. He has nothing to show for it. The Port Authority under the leadership of Jim Hartung just held a meeting with the Melford project representatives, and WSPD has made sure the public is aware of the possibilities of an intermodal project in Northwest Ohio.
Is it possible the mayor wants to be in charge of the Port Authority? YES! He has six seats on the board already and although his claims of not being involved with the public airing of the Hartung story it seems quite convenient that he also was having trouble getting info about the coke plant, and wasn't invited to Nova Scotia.
I know the Carty apologists will come up with excuses but none will clear up the trail of stink this mayor has left behind him. Smithers, Scott, Griffin, yes even Schwartz and the list goes on and on.

if we are to see change. A businessman is needed in the top spot.
Hooda Thunkit
Agreed, anything besides another petulant child...
But, when the question is asked, what current politico comes to mind?
I can't think of any business like leader among the field at this time, so will someone step forward and clean up "his dishonor's mess?
With the likely list of council candidates we have right now, it's going to take one helluva leader to straighten out this mess. . .
(And, yes, I did include the RHINOs in my comments; no true leadership there either.)
EGO !
The man has let his self inportant power hungry ego take control of his life and the city he was elected to run. Not that he has shown any true leadership. He needs to just go away. Move to another city like Floyd Rose did. Except don't return and cause trouble like he did. Carty should just retire from public life. Possibly take up a job as a life coach for all those other politicos in training. He could teach them his strongly worded speaking style. How to shop for colorfull sweaters. How to be an arm twister and conniverer. How to not take no for an answer when the party refuses to endorce him. And how to buddy up to the local newspaper.
Scrap all that.... I don't want to doom us all. Just give him Dr. Jack' Kevorkian's phone number.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder:
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV-R), the diagnostic classification system used in the United States, as "a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and a lack of empathy."[1]
The narcissist is described as turning inward for gratification rather than depending on others and as being excessively preoccupied with issues of personal adequacy, power and prestige.[2] Narcissistic personality disorder can be caused by receiving excessive praise and criticism in childhood, particularly from parental figures.
DSM Criteria
A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following[1]:
1. has a grandiose sense of self-importance
2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
3. believes that he or she is "special" and unique
4. requires excessive admiration
5. has a sense of entitlement
6. is interpersonally exploitative
7. lacks empathy
8. is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her
9. shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes
Hypothetical causes
The etiology of this disorder is unknown according to Groopman and Cooper. However, they list the following factors identified by various researchers as possible factors.[3]
* An oversensitive temperament at birth
* Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents
* Valued by parents as a means to regulate their own self-esteem
* Excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic feedback
* Unpredictable or unreliable caregiving from parents
* Severe emotional abuse in childhood
* Being praised for perceived exceptional looks or talents by adults
* "Constant praise for good behaviors, and criticism for poor behaviors in childhood"
Some narcissistic traits are common and a normal developmental phase. When these traits are compounded by a failure of the interpersonal environment and continue into adulthood they may intensify to the point where NPD is diagnosed.[citation needed] It has been suggested[who?] that NPD may be exacerbated by the onset of aging and the physical, mental, and occupational restrictions it imposes as can most personality traits.

RECOGNIZING NARCISSISM IN ACTION
When the narcissistic defense is operating in an interpersonal or group setting, the grandiose part does not show its face in public. In public it presents a front of patience, congeniality, and confident reasonableness. However, beneath the surface it is supremely smug and superior. It is confident it can deceive the "fools" or their objective it is committed to blocking, while maintaining its own control and dominance over either the rules, and/or the flow of events.
It is critical to understand that the narcissistic defense is addicted to power and control. It, the defense, and they, the people who are controlled and possessed by the defense, must have power. The addict in the private sector gains power by instantaneously gratifying his needs through drugs, alcohol, sex, or gambling. The addict, or the person or group dominated by the narcissist, gains and holds power by dominating and controlling the flow of information, the rules, and the processes for participating in life.
One of the best places to spot narcissism, unfortunately, is at the top of a company or a public organization. The narcissism can be detected by being sensitive to resistance from the top. The top, or the person or persons at the top, will resist efforts toward change in process or structure. The resistance is communicated through a variety of techniques: always needing more information, appearing confused or having a lack of clarity; excuses; premeditated "blowups" or other distractions from whatever the issues being considered. A common example is as follows: a position needs to be filled in order for an important project to move forward. The boss, preferring control over progress and efficiency, delays and delays the hiring of the new executive, consistently finding something wrong with either the candidates or the search firm.
Another common sign of narcissism is the experience of pressure. This pressure comes from the unrelenting demand for perfection which is necessary to the narcissism if the grandiosity and illusion of omnipotence is to be maintained. The employee or group member will feel pressure either to conform, or to continue producing until exhaustion. The pressure is unpleasant and contains the negative expectation that people can't meet objectives through their own resources and cooperative participation without pressure from above. It devalues pride of accomplishment, commitment, and capacity to follow through and complete tasks.
When narcissism perceives that it could lose control of a situation or process, it often feels threatened. The grandiosity's sense of omnipotence is being threatened. When this happens, narcissism's response can be one of character assassination of those who are threatening its objectives. The presence of character assassination is another way of detecting the presence of narcissism.
There is another important way to recognize narcissism. Narcissism is often contained in language through the use of "I". If a person listens carefully to another's use of "I" one can detect the grandiosity inside, the part speaking for the whole.
to get into a leadership postion in the first place. Let's face it...the people who end up becoming owners, managers, bosses, etc....got those positions partly because of their narcissim and ego. Usually...people who are nice, laid-back, and not willing to step on some toes....are far less likely to get leadership roles.
the wrong way. Consider:
Since taking office he has failed to increase the police force, been forced to settle for delays on Southwyck and Marina District.
Ok, Southwyck and the Marina District are postponed. Imagine that you're going to build a new house and Carlton Finkbeiner is your project leader. Somehow, the project gets postponed. Is this really a bad thing? Now imagine you live in Toledo, and the largest gang in the city has failed to recruit new members. How is this a bad thing?
He's been told no by the Municipal Court, been charged with civil rights violations, and accused of verbal abuse by Patsy Scott.
Oh, well, if Patsy Scott accused Our Beloved Mayor of verbal abuse, then that's all need be said. Break out the pillory!
COSI has closed,
A money pit finally failed. Now what? Instead of shoveling money into COSI, we can shovel it somewhere else. Providing we can find the pile of money that I just know has to be around here somewhere.
ESM is a failure No! Say it ain't so!
and FEDEX is leaving. Which anyone could have predicted. I remember when a few greedy fat cats came up with the Portside idea and the Toledo city government was so stupid they snapped up the bait, swallowed the hook, the line, the pole and bought the fisherman a brand new RV towing a 30 foot fishing boat with hot and cold running women. Any ten year old who had the chance to spend a week downtown could have told Our Beloved Mayor that this plan to revitalize the gravel pit wasn't going to fly.
All in all not a good showing for the mayor. Look, if I was a dumber than a box of rocks psychotic with delusions of grandeur, I'd be ecstatic to get a review this good.
He does have a third place finish in a contest sponsored by the United Nations, and a bike path a block from his house. And I'm proud to say that the UN has never awarded me anything.
The mayor claims to have been working for 28 months on the intermodal. He has nothing to show for it. How is this a bad thing? The mayor of Toledo, the poster child for finger in your face diplomacy, the same Carty Finkbeiner who gained national recognition for his comment about putting deaf people near the airport, has failed to put gasoline and matches to a project that might help the area.
Is it possible the mayor wants to be in charge of the Port Authority? This is an obvious story, but it's being read by people who did not vote for Carty and who instinctively would throw a net over him should they ever see him running around loose. The man is a menace. That being the obvious case, let us not forget that Finkbeiner was elected, beating Jack Ford who slept through the whole process. The voters of Toledo who don't have terminal apathy elected him. Until the apathy changes, you have Finkbeiner.
