St. Vincent de Paul tries to sell headquarters

Another local charity says high building costs could mean it will have to relocate.

The board of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is trying to sell its building at 1001 Washington St., said Willi Meyer, the group's business manager.

"They wanted to see if there is a market for the building," he said. About $50,000 to $70,000 worth of upgrades are needed on the building, which is not accessible to those with disabilities.

"It's very frustrating when we have handicapped people who can't get in the building," Mr. Meyer said.

Earlier this month, The United Way of Greater Toledo announced a plan to tear down its 1969 building because the cost of upgrades are estimated to be greater than the cost of a new structure. The United Way plans to build a newer, smaller building on its downtown property.

The St. Vincent de Paul building also needs electrical and plumbing work, upgrades to the freight elevator, parts of the floor need to be repaired or replaced, and it needs new painting and carpeting. The agency is in the process of updating its security system, having been victimized by break-ins 13 times since February, Mr. Meyer said.
