NEW POLLS: AMERICANS WANT GREATER LEADERSHIP ON EDUCATION ISSUES

Pew and Rasmussen Polls find education is important issue in 2008
election

Washington, DC - As the school year comes to a close, two recent polls
show that more Americans want desperately needed changes to reform our
nation's schools.

The Pew Research Center's latest poll reveals that education is the No.
2 priority for voters this fall; trumping taxes, Iraq and other issues.
A recent Rasmussen poll found that 90 percent of voters believe
education is important. Specifically, nearly three out of five voters
polled said education is "very important."

"On the heels of Strong American Schools, launching ED in 08 campaign
activities in Ohio and Missouri, Strong American Schools celebrates the
latest polls which indicate the emergence of education as a top-tier
issue for Americans across the country," said ED in 08 Executive
Director Marc Lampkin.

"Since the Feb. 12 USA Today/Gallup poll (which revealed education was
the third most important issue) and the April 21 CBS News/MTV poll
(which revealed young voters ranked fixing America's education system as
the third most important issue), Strong American Schools has seen a
sustained emergence of education as a top-line concern. This indicates
the measurable success of our grassroots and grasstops advocacy, and the
growing understanding among the public that the only way to hedge
against long-term economic decline is to make sure our children have the
skills they need for school, work and life," continued Lampkin.
