Anyone else in West Toledo (jackman/Alexis to Secor) seeing gang graffiti increasing? Behind Start High School is tons of RUM and bloods/crips spray painted all over the place. My neighborhood now has eight balls spray painted on street signs...which apparently has something to do with gangs marking their drug territory (brilliant bastards they are). Trying to convince the mostly elderly people in my neighborhood that its not a sign that Fats Domino will be visiting...but is gang related...seems to be difficult in getting them to rally behind stopping these thugs. The gang problem just seems to keep spreading further and further west to northwest. in Toledo.
noticed it.
Kooz, just march right on out there and clean off those street signs. The coated metal should clean up fairly easily with a brush-on paint remover. Wait for a warm, dry day, brush it on, maybe spread some TP on it to retain moisture, and then an hour later take it all off with a plastic scraper.
The gangs take over neighborhoods slowly. Don't just wake up one day to gunshots peppering your house.
Cleaning off those street signs probably isn't such a good idea. Gang members will take that as disrepect . Gang members don't take kindly to people dissing them.

Good. Who cares! Let them be 'dissed'. They disrespected the neighborhood first by painting their crap all over public property (taxpayer property). These felons-in-training aren't paying taxes and are not productive members of the community. They need to be rounded up and put to work cleaning up all the graffiti across town and picking up litter. By the end of the day they'll be too tired from working so hard to get into trouble - kind of like the rest of us hard working folks.
The end product of gangsta-ization of a neighborhood is abandoned houses. Gangs don't want nosy neighbors and nice housing. An abandoned house is great for what gangs use them for -- drug use, initiation rituals, sex, and killing.
If you don't fight NOW, you WILL lose later.
All it seems to take is a few punks takin' tough stances, and you middle-class nitwits fold up like origami. That's cowardice and you need to hear what you are, Tril.
"$" painted on the street signs in our area and gang graffiti popping up all over the place. As a matter of fact they just plastered a local boarded up building this past week, but hey those child care centers are now under control. I feel safer.
or rather, the lack of consideration for the ramifications causes me to drop what I'm drinking and write.
From 1derfullymade: Good. Who cares! Let them be 'dissed'.
You and your family will care, that's who. These people don't attend church services regularly, nor have they ever been Boy Scouts. When they feel insulted or angry (which is most of the time) they are prone to react violently. The have been known to carry weapons, which they do not hesitate to employ.

He started it!
No! Him! He started it!
Liar!
Mom!

Ok, enough already. As appealing as this scenario might be, I couldn't begin to guess who would enforce it or how. I suppose a group of Florida prison guards might pull it off. Moreover, there are laws against this sort of behavior. Now, if you'd like to do something really constructive like, for instance, providing the little darlings an alternative to their ideas about free enterprise and social athletic clubs, well then, have at it. I suppose you could hold the parents responsible for the kids behavior, but I wouldn't count on all the members being juveniles.

Very doubtful. What they are likely to do is move across town and live with mama Shawanda and Daddy Two Guns for a while.
You know, I'm reminded of Greek Town in Detroit. Many years ago all the merchants in a two or three block area decided they'd had enough and, through vigilante justice, made their area safe. I don't know how things stand today, but back in the sixties you rolled your windows up and kept your pistol handy until you got to Greek Town. The children of the local business owners helped you find a place to park, and you could actually leave your car unlocked with valuables in plain sight, and everything would remain undisturbed. Stand at the border of Greek Town, and you'd see criminals across the street, all of whom knew better than to come into Greek Town.
The wimps like Tril just don't seem to WANT to understand that the gangs are predators and fully intend to prey on them once their focus is set. A predator has teeth and lethal intent. Hence, undeclared though it may be, a war is on. Fight or lose. It's as simple as that, since it's too local to mean ANYTHING ELSE.
P.S. And in response to a previous inquiry which my lack of proper manners compelled me to ignore: I'm doing fine, Maddie. I've gotta get a more fuel-efficient vehicle, and that's going to take a serious capital outlay.
Maybe I am a wimp. Maybe I’m just a realist. I do know that once I start confronting gang members, things are going to escalate. Things could even escalate to a gunfight. If that happens, there is no way I can win. I either get shot to death, or shoot the gang member to death. If the latter scenario happens, the system will stand behind me the same way it did Bernard Goetz. Either way, my life is over or ruined.
THEY haven't defeated you. YOU have defeated you. You are only SPECULATING that your life will somehow be over once you opposed the ghetto-ization of your neighborhood by gangs.
And there are legions of pansy-assed people like you in your neighborhood, actually CREATING the social environment in which gangs can easily operate. I'd swear that gangs can SMELL the rank stench of a pack of spineless dweebs, huddling in fear of losing their status as isolated consumers, yet just losing it all anyway since their housing situation deteriorates around them.
My kind gave up their rights when they submitted to all these rules that say you must rent your property to anybody, you must sell your property to anybody.
You are correct to an extent.
You should not take on gangs as an individual.
But your neighborhood, as a collective force, must make the commitment to keep or take back what is theirs.
There have to be a number of like-minded individuals who are tired of seeing their streets controlled and dominated by thugs.
Meet, organize, form block watches, contact the city requesting additional police patrols through your area.
for answering the question. I think we need the old Italian gangsters back...these thugs of today wouldn't stand a chance against Vinnie and his cousin Tight Lip Louie.
As a former business owner in Toledo, I regularly cleaned gang graffiti from my businesses - I kept cans of paint on hand at all times to quickly eliminate the problem. In my experience the taggers are mostly in the 12-16 year old range, and the older gangbangers with cars and guns and nasty attitudes are less involved in petty nonsense like tagging gang signs on buildings and road signs.
Besides - taggers usually do their work at night or when there is less traffic nearby, and this is more of a sneaky crime than an in-broad-daylight-on-your-front-porch act, and this graffiti is more often than not perpetrated by gang wannabes rather than full-fledged gangbangers.
Clean and paint to your heart's content, and have little fear of retaliation, unless you go out of your way to antagonize these idiots by verbally embarassing them in public: "Ha ha, arse-hole, better luck next time" or something like that. Walk tall, keep quiet, and carry a big-arse paint brush (apologies to Teddy Roosevelt).
From the city of Toledo's website...
"The Clean Sweep Toledo campaign is designed to provide an aggressive approach to enforce city codes against litter, illegal dumping, graffiti, house stripping and illegal parking." Clean Sweep hotline: 419-245-3340. Might be worth a shot.
