Barack Obama Says He’s a Muslim on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos

Tagged:  •    •

George Stephanopoulos of ABC’s This Week and Barack H. Obama were talking this morning about the bloggers who are hitting Sarah Palin hard, and others who are hitting Obama hard, about his ties to the islamic world, and then Obama, giving credit to his presidential opponent said “John McCain has not talked about my muslim faith.” Whoops! “You know what I mean . . . . .,” it was a magic moment for sure. It sure seemed like a freudian slip, he looked pretty embarrassed, but kept his cool and they moved on quickly, very quickly, with George acting as if nothing happened, classic left wing jive.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Obama fan, but I think he was taken out of context. He was trying to say that McCain has never implied or mentioned that Obama is a Muslim.

and thank you, Hey, Hey, for your honest, non-partisan, take on this.

"Jennifer Haberkorn THE WASHINGTON TIMES Thursday, August 28, 2008

Pennsylvania's former deputy attorney general and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter Philip J. Berg has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Pennsylvania accusing presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama of lying about his U.S. citizenship, which would make him ineligible to be president.

Mr. Berg is one of a faction of Clinton supporters who haven't heeded the party's call for unity, filing the suit just days before the opening of the Democratic National Convention, which will nominate Mr. Obama as the party's presidential candidate.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia last week, also names the Democratic National Committee and the Federal Election Commission and says Mr. Obama´s mother went to Kenya late in her pregnancy and ended up giving birth there. It also claims that later in life, Mr. Obama declared himself a citizen of Indonesia."

Washington Times? Couldn't find a quote from the National Enquirer?

Sorry, I couldn't find it on Comedy Central since that is obviously where you get your "news". I guess you must have missed all the other stories about Obama.

With people like you who think they are old enough to vote and watch Comedy Central in order to "learn", I fear for the future of America.

It's my understanding that as long as Obama's mother is an American, she can give birth to him anywhere in the world, and he's still considered a U.S. citizen.

Doesn't this happen all the time, for example, with U.S. women serving overseas in the Armed Forces?

What would it matter if a candidate was a jew, catholic, Muslim, Eastern Orthodox.

This is a country of many faiths and not just one and as of yet there is no requirement to be of one and one along.

This isn't about a "religious lithmus test", it is about a flat-out boldfaced lie.

Does this mean that John McCain is a boldfaced liar when he confuses Sunni and Shia?

What difference does his religion make?

Seriously, you can't be that damn stupid. Even for a Democrat, you have gone far beyond supidity.

Once again, for those of us TOO STUPID TO READ, "Barack Obama Says He’s a Muslim on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos"

Which means, PLAIN AND SIMPLY, Barack Obama is a liar

Wow - talk about being dense...

Obama miss spoke and it was then taken out of contect.

Obama has always been a Christain...once again who cares, haven't the wing nuts have been bashing his christain church for the last 6 months?

Pick something to be out raged against and stick to it... Somene should talk to your parents about upping your Ritalin.

And likewise, as I hold the mirror up, now take a look in it, please.

Bush said that he was for smaller government, and yet, he increased government in his eight years in office, lie #1.

McCain says that he will reduce government spending and government size, and yet supports government take over of mortgage companies in melt down, lie #2.

What does his religion have to do with it?

He is a Christian, worshiped in a Christian Church.

His Muslim comment was a swipe at those that see terrorists and trouble in almost every non-white person or person of the Muslim faith.

What does his leaving the Muslim faith of his family, and then becoming Christian have to do with anything?

There are many articles written about his early years in Indonesia, a Muslim country and the relatives who registered him for school filled out the paper work and they put down what his religion was. Did he accept what they did? Would he as a child have any say in it? My parents declared me to be one faith and when I was old enough I made my choice as to what path to follow.

The real question for me at least, what does his religion have to do with it.

from the McCain/Palin camp on September 11. How are they going to exploit the day? Isn't that the day Track is deployed?

Both campaigns have said no ads on September 11.

But the appearance there by both will possibly be used, on September 12.

And my first reaction was. Not did he just say that. It was Way to go George. Show your bias by covering up the senators mistake..... Jaded ???... of course !

I did not see the ABC show however...

Religion should not be the main focal point of presidential elections, or any public office election for that matter.

I know that people want to know the religious beliefs of the candidates that they may vote into a particular office, and that is understandable.

Especially when it comes to religious beliefs and where a person stands on issues such as abortion etc.

However according to the United States constitution:

In the United States, freedom of religion is a constitutionally guaranteed right provided in the religion clauses of the First Amendment. Freedom of religion is also closely associated with separation of church and state, a concept which was written of by Thomas Jefferson.

The modern legal concept of religious freedom as the union of freedom of belief and freedom of worship with the absence of any state-sponsored religion, originated in the United States of America.

The United States Constitution addresses the issue of religion in two places: in the First Amendment, and the Article VI prohibition on religious tests as a condition for holding public office. The First Amendment prohibits the federal government from making a law "respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" This provision was later expanded to state and local governments, through the Incorporation of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The "no religious test" clause of the United States Constitution is found in Article VI, section 3, and states that:

“ ...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States. ”

This has been interpreted to mean that no federal employee, whether elected or appointed, "career" or "political," can be required to adhere to or accept any religion or belief. This clause immediately follows one requiring all federal and state officers to take an oath of support to the Constitution. This implies that the requirement of an oath, even presumably one taken "So help me God" (not a part of the presidential oath, the only one spelled out in the Constitution, but traditionally almost always added to it), does not imply any requirement by those so sworn to accept a particular religion or a particular doctrine.

The clause is cited by advocates of separation of church and state as an example of "original intent" of the Framers of the Constitution of avoiding any entanglement between church and state, or involving the government in any way as a determiner of religious beliefs or practices. This is important as this clause represents the words of the original Framers, even prior to the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

Religion should not be the main focal point of presidential elections, or any public office election for that matter

I find curious the defensive liberal position and that of BHO when he was first accused of being Muslim. They couldn't express often enough and provide enough evidence the Barack was not Muslim nor had he ever been.

Now that he may have made a Freudian slip we are hearing things like religion has no place in this political election and what difference does it make if he is Muslim? Methinks the Obamanites doth protest too much.

If religion has no place or it doesn't matter in this election, how come Barack Obama could not come out from the start and state that he had a Muslim upbringing but switched to Christianity about 20 years ago instead of flat out deny he was ever a Muslim.

From his website...
Barack Obama Is Not and Has Never Been a Muslim. Obama never prayed in a mosque. He has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian who attends the United Church of Christ.

What was he afraid of? Truth be told I personally do not care if he is or isn't Muslim just like I do not care what people think of my German Catholic upbringing. But I do care about credibility.

This may be a simple mis-speak, then again it may not. In any case I do not believe Barack Obama is being truthful with me.

- Just the KAT, thinking out loud again.

I also watched the show and my first reaction was he mis-spoke as he was forming his thought. My second reaction was how long would it be before someone decided to use the error against him.

McCain has had his moments of "mis-speak" and then immediately correcting himself - as mentioned in this clip when he spoke of Iran aiding Al-Qaeda.

It happens to all of us, but most of us don't have a million people waiting to pounce on every miscue. This whole thing is a crock.

Let us move on to something more substantive.

OMG...I agree with you 100% again! Why waste time on this. Let's stick to issues that affect our everyday lives. Unemployment, budget deficits, fair taxation, alternative energy sources, affordable health care for every citizen, supportive rather than punitive national education goals...REAL issues!!

Thanks Dale but you don't need to act so shocked. Perhaps I should say, "OMG, I can't agree with you more." Did you ever think to just say, "Well said. I agree"!

I can't believe how the little stuff becomes so engrossing to many. Except in these days of polarizing politics practiced by all sides they must look for every little nuance and miscue to gain a perceived advantage - and that goes for their supporters many of whom post on this blog.

There are real issues out there and while I might not agree with you on the solutions or even how you frame the argument we have some monster issues to tackle.

And the party operatives are not doing anything unconstitutional.

They are though, preying on people's fears, misconceptions and ignorance.

The government of the U.S. created no laws to deny the freedom of religion to the indigenous people of the U.S., but throughout the history of the U.S. steps were and continue to be taken to deny the people their rights, all with no laws being passed.

The litmus test is not a practical matter, but religion is being used, in this case as a winning strategy for high political office.
