Toyota's massive recalls of its floor mats and gas pedals may turn into a lot of finger pointing, with new questions about what the motor company knew about the safety problems and when.

While Toyota USA president Jim Lentz told ABC News he was confident that "there are no electronic problems" with Toyota vehicles and that the problem had been completely fixed with the recalls, Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) said that in private, Toyota executives told his staff they still don't know what caused all of the runaway cars.

I'll admit the thought has gone through my head -- especially after Government Motors offered any Toyota owner $1000 to buy a GM car. Unfair competition? Hmmmm..... That's why the government doesn't need to own businesses. ========================================================================Are you serious? Do you really think this is some massive conspirary theory. Dude, you need to go out and stop sitting in the house listening to Rush. Use some common sense. People have been reporting these problems way before Obama was even president. 40 percent sudden acceleration problems reported to the government are Toyota cars. What I've read is a few thousand people registered complaints with the government. If you think about it, how many other people have the problem but didn't register the complaint. I'm thinking it would be 10's of thousands. Now comes the common sense part. If this truly is a conspirary then all those people who reported problems would be in on it. The founder of Apple must be in on it too. This problem started to appear in the mid 2000's. That would mean Obama knew he was going to be president in a few years so he had people starting to report the problem. Not only did he have to know that but he would have had to know GM and Chrysler were going to go bankrupt and the government was going to take over. If this is the case I want to borrow Obama's chrystal ball.

I am glad Toyota is actually doing something! I have a 2008 Scion XB and it has had radio, radiator, transmission, and idling problems. I have only had it two years and it has been in the shop numerous times! I have contacted Scion and they always give me a case number and send me back to the shop for them to tell me nothing is wrong. I am so sick of the way I have been treated like it is "all in my head!" They think if the computer isn't registering something, nothing is wrong. I tried to explain that my last car had computer problems and thats why it didn't register. I wonder if they will treat the Co-Founder of Apple the same way? Is he crazy as well? I do know one thing, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA!!

Even if it were a CAW shop, it's not the line workers that design the petals, it's white collar engineers that specify how the petals are designed, manufactured, and tested for quality. The Toyota recalls are not an indictment of union or non-union labor, they're the result of poor leadership from executives. Toyota's management has lost control of the situation and have shown a complete lack of crisis management skills. This scenario will be taught in business school for decades to come as an example of what not to do when faced with a product defect.

Yep, hard to believe it if you have those "kaizen" people running all over salivating and taking classes in "process improvement".  Hell, even hospitals are implimenting LSS.

Crisis management isn't process improvement. Process improvement is what a company implements to improve its manufacturing quality. Crisis management is how a company deals with major black swan events.

Good crisis management will allow a company to navigate with public events like the Tylenol murders and survive. Poor crisis management can cause permanent irreparable harm to a company's public image, like the Ford Pinto recall, or can even drive a company out of business. Toyota will not be bankrupt because of the accelerator/braking problems, but because company executives did not get out in front of this event, the public's confidence in their quality and engineering will be shaken for years.
