Experts point throttles, not floor mats, in Toyota incidents

Eric Weiss was stopped at a busy Long Beach, Calif., intersection last month when he said his 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup unexpectedly started accelerating, forcing him to stand on the brakes to keep the bucking truck from plowing into oncoming cars.
Toyota Motor Corp. says the gas pedal design in Weiss' truck and more than 4 million other Toyota and Lexus vehicles makes them vulnerable to being trapped open by floor mats, and recently announced a costly recall to fix the problem.
But Weiss is convinced his incident wasn't caused by a floor mat. He said he removed the mats in his truck months earlier on the advice of his Toyota dealer after his truck suddenly accelerated and rear-ended a BMW (MORE)

sweet video. of course all crashes happen head on with exactley one half of each car hitting the other half of the other car. guess i'll just have to avoid hitting anyone. so far after 43 years of driving i haven't had an accident like this. knock wood (or sensor g's head whichever is closer)

Is the Toyota Motor Corp. juggernaut losing its conqueror-of-the-world mojo?
Because if it was a Detroit automaker that was recalling 4.26 million vehicles to repair accelerator problems, or if it was a Detroit automaker that had broken its historic no-plant-closings pledge, or if it was a Detroit automaker that had recalled more vehicles (2.38 million) in 2005 than it sold in the United States that year (2.26 million), the answer would be an emphatic yes.
The answer also would be yes if Toyota, an earnings powerhouse, suddenly stopped minting cash -- notwithstanding the three-month period ended Sept. 30 -- and was on track to lose billions more this year. The answer would be yes if its exponential market share gains suddenly slowed, or if its national rival, Honda Motor Co., kept delivering profits despite a global auto recession and its new South Korean rival, Hyundai-Kia, continued to grab precious U.S. market share.
News flash: The men running Toyota appear to be mortal. They overreach and make mistakes. Their vehicles are not flawless. Their engineers cut corners, at least in ways that garner the attention of the National Highway Traffic Administration. Their Camry no longer is the undisputed king of midsize cars, now that rivals Ford Motor Co. and even General Motors Co. are proving they can produce world-class metal, too. (MORE)

Recall: 2007-2008 Jeep Wrangler
Chrysler is recalling over 161,000 Jeep Wranglers equipped with automatic
transmissions manufactured between June 2006 and July 2007. The vehicles
were not equipped with a transmission fluid temperature warning system, and
a fire could result if the fluid boils over and comes in contact with the
engine or exhaust component. Dealers will inspect the 2007-2008 models and
enable a “hot oil” warning light on the dashboard and an audible chime
indicating when transmission fluid temperature is elevated. Typically, for
the transmission fluid to reach a high temperature in an SUV, the vehicle
would need to be used for a heavy-duty purpose, such as serious off-roading
or pulling a heavy load. Both scenarios are easy to imagine with a Wrangler,
as it excels in its off-road ability. Owners should also be aware of the tow
capacity for their Wrangler, which is between 2,000 and 3,500 lbs. depending
on the trim line. Those owners who do push their Wranglers hard might also
consider an aftermarket transmission cooler.
