Rome lived upon its principal till ruin stared it in the face. Industry is the only true source of wealth, and there was no industry in Rome. By day the Ostia road was crowded with carts and muleteers, carrying to the great city the silks and spices of the East, the marble of Asia Minor, the timber of the Atlas, the grain of Africa and Egypt; and the carts brought out nothing but loads of dung. That was their return cargo.

~ The Martyrdom of Man by Winwood Reade (1871)~

I ran across this a few days ago and though those who are subjected to the monoculture of GOP radio and cable should look at a truly independent view from a former Washington insider. This is a most interesting read but worth it. If you prefer a video version with less facts here you go. http://billmoyers.com/video/#61504

The one thing Moyers, like all good Liberals, fails to mention is the cooperation of his party in the wholesale take over of the government by those who buy influence. Both Democrats and Republicans have become accustomed to giving their influence to those with the most dollars. I have no problem with anyone, even corporations, from donating to election campaigns. In return I do believe those elected should be open about where the money is coming from, putting restrictions on lobbying access, and opening up the passage of bills to more transperancy. Who wrote the law for instance would be a great start? Moyers wants to lay blame on everyone but himself and those like him who for years have told us just how great it would be if we just elected those he believes in because the other guys are bad. That's his deep secret.

Fred as usual jumps before he even reads the article assuming that his narrow mind has it all figured out. This is a bipartisan piece. It finds fault with the system as a whole. Don't make it an ignorant left vs right argument. I think the SB views are a little smarter than the cheer leading Dittoheads at WSPD.

I had already read the article and was waiting for you to claim it was bipartisan before posting this. Included in the article are these mentions
Bush-3
Republican-9
GOP-2
Tea Party- 6
Liberal-1

Since it mentioned both sides of the argument DMHI is correct it's bipartisan

Budget cuts to slash U.S. Army to smallest since before World War Two
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/24/us-usa-defense-budget-idUSBREA...

(Reuters) - The Pentagon said on Monday it would shrink the U.S. Army to pre-World War Two levels, eliminate the popular A-10 aircraft and reduce military benefits in order to meet 2015 spending caps, setting up an election-year fight with the Congress over national defense priorities.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, previewing the Pentagon's ideas on how to adapt to government belt-tightening, said the defense budget due out next week would be the first to look beyond 13 years of conflict, shifting away from long-term ground wars like Iraq and Afghanistan.

This will go nowhere because the Deep State will fight it. We can't afford this Roman empire military because all we produce anymore is crap. Just like Rome.

What has your Commander-in-Chief done to downsize the military over his term?

Nothing, that's what. In the 2012 budget year, with the "fiscal cliff" and all that nonsense, the military still grew by 1.8%.

And before you blame the Congress, the Executive Office of the President (EOP) creates the budget each year... well, it's supposed to, until Obama broke the mold and let the Congress spend money via allocation bills for years.

Obama is yet another actor of the Deep State. When will you Liberals admit it? You fucked up in 2008 and then you compounded that mistake in 2012. You had some real Democrats running, but you shoved them aside in your haste to be the first generation to vote for a Black man. Now you're going to vote for that witch Hillary in 2016 since you still can't admit that you're a pack of total tools.

GZ did you read the story? Its not about Dems and Replubs. Its way beyond that...its about money and control. you're being sucked in my the media circus.

The ironic answer is that it IS about Democrats and Republicans, in how they're controlled by corporate money, and then how you partisans keep voting for your corrupt side anyway.

Q.E.D.

I love the way people of your ilk whine about corporate donations to PACS, while saying nothing about the free airtime given to the liberal agenda.

G-MAN -- You're living in the past. Conservative sources now reach more people than any other sources. LOTS of free air time for conservatives on Fox!

Where did you get that from? One has to have cable to get any sort of Conservative information. You won't get it from ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, and so on.

I guess you never watch local channel 36.

Fox (cable) News is available to 90 million homes! Only 22% of American homes do NOT have cable, satellite, or both! Fox News has been the most watched cable news channel for a decade!! This is on the Fox website.

Yes! Conservative news sources dominate the news.

The premium news programs on Fox(Hannity, Kel;ly, etc.) have to be PAID for.

Some choose NOT to have cable and/or satellite. Some can't afford cable and/or satellite. According to Willard, all of those too poor to be able to afford cable or satellite are sure votes for liberal candidates anyway.

And, you conveniently ignore the fact that Fox operates a nationwide network of television stations which air for free. In short, Fox News reaches almost every American! And Fox News has led in viewership for a decade!! Just check out the Fox website!

So-called liberal news sources no longer dominate. Conservatives will just have to get a new mantra. How about that 48% thing. Willard liked that one, (but only when he was speaking before a group of one per centers)!

Dale, you're the only liberal on this site that recognizes the level the new conservative power house is climbing to, and is willing to point it out! I'm sure the others know, but continue to deny it. If we take a quick look at the last hundred years of world history, it is readily apparent just how well pretending a situation doesn't exist has been..

Rupert Murdoch Gave Tony Blair $100,000, Then Blair Fucked His Wife
http://gawker.com/rupert-murdoch-gave-tony-blair-100-000-then-blair-fuc-...
"Last week, we learned that former British prime minister Tony Blair emailed called disgraced News Corp. executive Rebekah Brooks in 2011 to offer his "unofficial" consulting services as she faced arrest over the company's metastasizing phone hacking scandal. And last year, we learned that Blair had also been allegedly fucking Murdoch's then-wife Wendi Deng in a bizarre love triangle. Today, we learned that, according to tax documents Gawker has obtained, Murdoch's News Corp. was paying Blair's private foundation while all this incestuous, wheels-within-wheels melodrama was going on."
