Real journalism
Written by Michael Miller | Editor in Chief | mmiller@toledofreepress.com
A poster using the pseudonym “Wolfman” asked these questions Jan. 16 in a Swampbubbles post headlined “The Propaganda Media State”: “Does a WSPD or a Toledo Free Press have the resources to do real journalism?” and “Should journalism get the next government bailout?”
Wolfman did not define specifics on “real journalism” but provided a link to a PBS.org video, “Saving American Journalism,” in which “NOW” host David Brancaccio interviews professor Bob McChesney and journalist John Nichols about the future of newspapers. The two men have authored a book, “The Death and Life of American Journalism: The Media Revolution that Will Begin the World Again,” that raises the question about the government stepping in with tax money to save newspapers. “Are people that easily confused and unable to distinguish news from opinion and propaganda?”

I would answer yes. Most people are busy with their daily lives and tune in to the local electronic media for short periods of time. Instead of taking the time to read newsprint they listen to opinionated “entertainers” that inform the listener of their specific ideology. We see this in the rise of cable news and AM talk radio. These entertainers are now confused with true journalism and have marketed to an angry audience selling them wares of mayhem. Will Americans wake up to the fact they are being used for marketing? You tell me!

LMAO..he tore you a new ass!!!

And all you can do is bleat over here on your "blog".....

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

There is no question that some blog sites are merely gossip mills or news release stenographers, but are people that easily confused and unable to distinguish news from opinion and propaganda?

His TV must not get Fox News and his radio must not get WSPD. If you want to know what these two groups think about the the intelligence of their audiences just listen/watch the commercials they put on. One get rich scam, vitamin scam or survivalist scam right after each other.

And if it were up to you...you'd shut them down quicker than Chavez...

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

Nope, try again...Fox News, WSPD and you are welcome to say what they want to say no matter how moronic.

I just find it ironic that most of commercials come down to buying gold, buying seeds, vitamins, IRS scams and male enhancement products... pretty much exactly the same crap the hosts spew in between the commercials really.

They must think they're listeners are compete rubes... then again, based on their success they may be on to something. I know if I had a scam product that I wanted to push onto a bunch of clueless suckers, talk radio is definitely where I'd start.

Recent ads on my show included the Toledo Symphony, Toledo Opera, Yark Auto dealers, Banner Mattress, Treece Financial Advisory, jewelry stores, restaurants, Cleveland Indians, Mud Hens/Tigers etc etc. apparently they all want the clueless suckers that listen to us to spend thier money on those products. If you weren't so wrong it would be funny. But the scary part is you are that wrong and you vote.

Any statement I make is the opinion of me exercising my first amendment right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and is generally permitted.

You forgot Gold Line, Survival Seed Bank, JK Harris (or some other IRS scam artist), Rich Dad Poor Dad plus all the "infomerical" scams you run on the weekend.

These are just off the top of my head. As for other legitimate advertiser, I'm LESS likely to spend my money at a place I hear advertised on your station.

I have no doubt that advertising on your station works for these businesses, heck if your average listener is falling for all those scams and cons, a legitimate company may do well.

BTW - Carrabba's sucks...

LMAO...you're just miffed cuz you didnt buy gold when it was 600 an ounce...

What a crybaby...

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

And I'm sure you sank you life saving in to it the 80's. How is that Wal-Mart greeter job working our for you?

Funny you should mention that...my kid started at walmart for 9 bucks an hour...

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

My kid started Kindergarten...you're old. :)

And your still stupid...get back to me in twenty years...

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

'And your you're still stupid'

Thank you Mr Spelling Nazi!

Thanks for listening so much Sensor. It's obvious from your knowledge of the advertisers names that you spend hours with WSPD. You just might be responsible for me getting a bonus last ratings period.

It's like watching all of the idiots trying out for American Idol. You watch/listen in small doses and laugh your ass off at the moronic judges and contestants.

Idiots and talentless hacks make for good ratings, I'm glad you found a formula that works.

Idol's only on for an hour a week - you seem to listen to speedy all day every day...

Hmm hmmm sounds plausible. I can't think of a time when I've chosen to listen to talentless hacks and idiots even in small doses. Perhaps that's what is wrong with Toledo. People like Jeremy elect talentless hacks and idiots for small doses.

Sure they listen, Fred! They have nobody on their side who tells anything resembling the truth. They know it, and I know it. That's the main reason I listen to all the conservative talk programs I can find to listen to. Which, in the Toledo area, is a lot of programs!

No they are busy watching C-span waiting for the healthcare meetings...

Wolfman urges those that tier of the daily grind of extreme right wing radio to tune into1310 WTDW AM Detroit withThom Hartman noon to 3:00 http://www.1310wtdw.com/main.html
Thom is a upcoming progressive star that presents factual news giving balance to the well funded right wing corporate radio entertainers. Even those that believe the WSPD talk could educate themselves by listening to the other side. Wolfman listens to all radio, not limiting his horizons by the predictable utterances of one ideology. Why if you think of yourself as being educated limit yourself to one argument? Wolfman thinks that many of WSPD listeners do not agree with its ideology. They only listen because of the one horse town nature of the "news talk radio station." Thom Hartman has a 3 million audience.

Thanks Fraud, now I know where NOT to spend my money.

Now, here's the agenda for your show this week:

1. Read The Blade.
2. Talk about what's in The Blade.
3. rinse & repeat

Pink Slip

I never rinse and repeat. That's a waste and is perpetrated by the shampoo companies to force more use of thier product.

Any statement I make is the opinion of me exercising my first amendment right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and is generally permitted.

So pink-slip, have you gotten your "obama money" yet? It sounds like you have 40-50 cents to spend somewhere.

Of course wolfman is against the media. They represent the largest nonunionized non regulated industry.

With all his talk of Accura's and Walmart you'd think he'd be calling for a boycott of the print media since their pay is so low. Not him... he advocates bailing them out.

Here is a chart of the average journalists salary.
http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Journalist/Salary

By comparison to auto workers:
According to Forbes:

Labor cost per hour, wages and benefits for hourly workers, 2006.

Ford: $70.51 ($141,020 per year)

GM: $73.26 ($146,520 per year)

Chrysler: $75.86 ($151,720 per year)

Note: in the chart journalists benefits were not included but as noted by this article benefits for journalists have gone down.

Mikey your facts are old, 2006. Get with the times MAAN! A lot has happened in 4 years. Auto workers have given up much in that time trying to compete with foreign invaders. The numbers you show are all wrong.

I used just a quick google search. I have cited everything.

If you have a problem with it you can always cite opposing facts and we can compare those.

What I do know is journalists aren't paid very much. In fact you criticize the TFP yet most of their contributors have other jobs because they could not survive off a TFP salary.

Yet you laborists say you "favor fair wages".

You should say you "favor fair wages for us and only us".

MikeyA

Fair wages for liberals...everyone else can screw...

Good union oil industry jobs?...the left says screw em!

Good union coal industry jobs? the left says screw em!

Union logging jobs? SCREW EM!

Union truckers?...NO CHEAP FUEL FOR YOU!...SCREW YOUR JOB!
