Court rules for gun rights, strikes Chicago handgun ban

A 5-4 conservative majority of justices on Monday reiterated its two-year-old conclusion the Constitution gives individuals equal or greater power than states on the issue of possession of certain firearms for self-protection.
Hip Hip Horray The Constitution prevails. 5 of the Supreme Robes hold up the Second Amendment.

Happy with the decision, but scared to think something so obvious to anyone with a brain passed by only one vote.

The vote is not acceptable to me. This should have been 9 to zero, or maybe 8 to 1 with one dissenter. What really gets to me is that these nine are (supposedly) intelligent, well-read people of good character, each whom understands what the Second Amendment means and what it meant to the authors of the Bill of Rights; and they don't care. The four dissenters do not care about protecting our right to bear arms.

The point that never gets mentioned in the 2-A debate, or any other civil rights debate, is that popular opinion doesn't matter. It wouldn't matter a bit if 99.9% of the population in the United States were all dead set against the right to bear arms, if they all voluntarily turned in every single one of their own weapons to the government (or the Brady Bunch) and started picketing the private homes of the very few armed citizens left. None of that matters - the right to bear arms is given to everyone by dint of their being alive, and is recognized in the BOR. It is the same as the other individual rights, and part of the job of the Federal government is to protect the citizens against the tyranny of local government (like, for instance, the city council and the police) as well as protecting the citizens against tyranny by the majority. The federal government isn't doing either one. Instead we're fighting a worthless war in the middle east, our military is scattered from hell to breakfast and congress is busy trying to decide just how they are going to get another advance on the US Credit Card without the spouse finding out right away. Hey, we really need a new car, right?

For my money if you don't want to own a firearm, fine. Go unarmed. Just don't tell me how to live my life, thanks.

Liberals/progressives for the most part don't want us to own guns, they are all about controlling the people. Sotomayor was asked whether she believed in the right to bear arms during her confirmation hearings and she said yes, now she dissents in her vote her. Comfirmation hearings are a joke.

IMHO. You are right on point! Not sure how people might label me but I am not real fond of having my rights taken away by groups that are sure that they know what is best for me. Quite a bit of what I read in SB seems like a whole lot of BS, simply whacked out opinions floating around in the "cloud" looking for a place to land. On the other hand I occasionally look at The Shack and find an electic sort of perspective, it's interesting. Of course I also find the Fred on Everything blog intriguing!

Thank God some still exercise common sense and respect our Constitution! Now if only that con man from Kenya, that bastard from Africa, would start to do the same!
