A marriage (match) made in heaven...

A marriage (match) made in heaven; the Democratic National Committee and Charlotte, North Carolina.

For those who may not have been aware, even after Tuesday, the Democrats will be holding their quadrennial get together in Charlotte during the first week of September. So what made, and still makes, Charlotte such an appealing location that it was chosen over the other finalist cities of Cleveland, Minneapolis and St. Louis?

Could it have been...

Could it have been that North Carolina is a right to work state?

  • Since the party decided not to accept corporate funding (somewhat admirable), there has been more pressure on unions to help raise the needed $36.6 million. Of course with the whole right to work thing and lack of unionized hotels in Charlotte, the union fat cats are feeling less than charitable and are focusing their money on grassroots efforts. That is if you consider the Walker recall in Wisconsin to be grassroots.

Or could it have been that President Obama will be accepting his nomination at Bank of America stadium?

  • There’s nothing like accepting the nomination of the party that spawned the Occupy Wall Street movement in a venue sponsored by one of the largest financial institutions to receive funds from the TARP bailout.

Or maybe it could have been that the state party is a political powerhouse?

  • Bev Perdue, one of the more unpopular governors in the country, announced back in January that she would not be seeking re-election. And as recent as last month, Jay Parmley, North Carolina Democratic party Executive Director, resigned amid allegations of sexual harassment of a former male staffer.

Or perhaps, just perhaps, it could have been North Carolina’s support of gay marriage?

  • In advance of President Obama’s third or fourth flip-flop on gay marriage, the voters of North Carolina decided not to leave the interpretation of marriage up to judicial activists and solidified the already established definition of marriage.

Seems like those are all good reasons for the Democrats to hold their convention in Charlotte. I can only hope they continue with this sort of wisdom throughout the rest of campaign season.
