What about those of us who are undeclared?
Personally, I'm not sure what I'll do but I do know that I don't think Obama is the person for the job.
I know quite a few Republicans who are supporting Obama. You should have had that as an option.
I am a libertarian, and declare no party beyond that. I'm not crazy about any of the candfidates. Hillary lies over stupid, little things, so that tells me she won't be above lying over important things. I had no problems with Obama except his lack of experience - until his preacher's rants came to light. Now, I have to believe he is every bit as much a racist as any racist can be. The last person I want in the White House, is a militant black or unscrupulous, shrill woman. Which leaves McCain I guess.....He doesn't seem to have much knowledge of economics or even the issues in the Middle East, and has a temper to boot. I think that prove to be disasterous in our country right now.
Starling--McCain favors taxing cigarettes.
that was needed to launch the 'RE-EDUCATION CENTERS" that are available in almost every state now !
I am a democrat and will vote true to my party no matter who wins the nomination.
Should have read: I am incredibly stupid and will vote for my party right, reason or none.
Welcome to the Toledo voting mentality!
As in many cases, such as the last mayoral race we are given the choice of bad and bad. You either vote for who, given the situation is best or depending on the half full theory who is least objectionable. You either pick one or let others do it for you.
Starling - have you watched just the clips on the news? Or have you watched the clips at YouTube that show the entire sequence which put Wright's remarks into context? I have watched the full clips and must disagree with you that this leads one to assume Obama is racist based upon his pastor's comments. View them in their entirety and the clips actually become part of a message. And I find myself hard pressed to disagree with the message even though it is distressing and not for reasons of racism.
As is so often the case, context can mean everything. Taken alone I can see how some might be offended. Some might still not like the message but I don't see the sermons as racists. Certainly they are from the perspective of a black man that has lived through less than great times for black Americans.
So the Wright episode will have no bearing on my decision. And FYI - I'm a white guy that is a lot older than I want to be, but have learned to accept that age can bring tolerance, wisdom and the ability to form my own opinions not what Fox or any other media source feeds me with video or stories intended to inflame without providing understanding. Beware the message - look behind the curtain.
I respect McCain, his service and his experience. But I can't vote for the economic and foreign policy that I expect to hear. I'll keep an open mind and see if my expectations become reality. If not, I'll consider voting for him. But I don't expect to be voting for McCain. He is not the guy I admired greatly in 2000.
Clinton sure does seem to have her faults. But don't they all. I wonder why she would make statements about the Bosnia trip as she has when she knows there would be archival footage to confirm the actual event. She is a smart lady! If she were knowingly lying, then she had to know what the consequences were and given how this race is going - she knew it would be under a microscope. So I can't convince myself she lied with intent. I know how memory can be shaped over time. It is never an accurate record of what really happened especially over time. So, I'm not likely to eliminate her on this episode. The world is seldom black or white - mostly shades of gray. However, I have not liked her recent campaign style. And this is what you see when under pressure and being President means pressure.
It is never an easy choice when we have to elect another human with frailties and weaknesses. But since when do we expect our leaders to be anything than human. Should they strive for high ideals? Yes! But no matter who we elect they will make mistakes. If the mistakes are real big, they suffer the consequences.
So I'm voting for someone and it won't be a vote based upon the negatives. I'll proceed with the half full approach.
BTW - I'm a declared independent.
Well said, sflagg. Bubbles to you...
Vote at all costs. There are plenty of other candidates from whom to choose. I have not voted for a mainstream party candidate ever. Sure I am told I am wasting my vote by voting for an obscure name. I am registering my dissatisfaction and posting a number. Which I hope someday in the near future will encourage a real leader to decide to run for office. That said leader will have the support of many. And not necessarily need to be a R or D.
sflagg - yes, I have heard & watched the preachers' sermons, and they still come off sounding full of hatred to 'whitey' & this country. I can even understand how his views were formed - he's of an age where he grew up & witnessed some of the worst of racism in this country. But his spewing hate now, only feeds the racism, and it is the last thing kids need to be learning & hearing now. It will only serve to inflame kids who already have negative attitudes about any race. I mean, if the president of the USA believes this man speaks wisdom, then it must mean something, right?
Yes, I am aware that McCain wants to raise tobacco taxes, and while I am not thriled with McCain at all, I worry more about the damage Hillary or Obama will do to this country than tobacco taxes. Such as, gving this country away to illegals, taxing to the high heavens to pay for "free" health care, & taking even more control over what should be personal freedoms in this country. Obama & Hillary will mean the kiss of death to this country & I don't think it will ever recover.
I think if you've ever been shot at, you'd remember it - years after the fact, you'd remember. I don't believe for one minute hillary 'forgot' - I've heard at least 4 or 5 audio clips of her 'mis-speaking' in different states/months on how she was dodging sniper fire in Bosnia. That is not a slip of memory - they were media moments & she got caught. Yes, she's smart - but she's also of the mentality that she thinks she can talk her way out of anything, by blowing it off as 'bad memory'. Bullshit.
Obama simply doesn't have enough experience for me. He's a great speaker - but it's all platitudes. He never really says what he'll change or how he'll change it. And I don't believe you can sit & listen to a preacher like that for over 20 years & not buy into some of those beliefs. He also referred to his white grandmother as a "typical white person". If Hillary, Bush or anybody said that about a black person & said they were a 'typical black person', every black person in the country would be screaming bloody murder. And I even understand what he meant - his grandmother sounds much like my own father - echos of how he was raised. But racism is racism no matter what color you're talking against. Color & religion were never an issue with me about Obama - but now, they are. Not that he's black - but because he views 'whitey' that way. And I've heard enough audio clips to think that Obama is for socialism. He seems to want to 'level' the playing field, as it were - so all people have the same. That is socialism somewhat, isn't it? (the last audio I heard was Obama discussing how it wouldn't be a bad thing to raise the Capital Gain from 15 percent to 25 percent - it apparently won't hurt the wealthy (because they don't pay anyway?) but it would help the poor? I may have this ass-backwards. I admit I am ignorant about economics, etc. - this doesnt sound good to me.)
****And I don't believe you can sit & listen to a preacher like that for over 20 years & not buy into some of those beliefs.****
Starling, I sat in the Catholic Church for 40 years but knew in my heart that some of the stuff was wrong, such as the white Jesus on the cross in every Catholic Church I ever attended. The Bible states that Jesus had hair of wool and the region that He was born in would not have been a region for a white skinned person.
Hey people, I am not trying to start a war about Jesus, just reporting that is possible to hear something for 40 years and know that it can't possibly be true.
Having said that I am an Independent and vote the person not the party. I usually vote the Libertarian person unless I really feel strongly about one of the other people.
Btw starling, Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and FDR all had equal or fewer years of political experience than Barack Obama
I realize that chris. But it's a different time, and our country is more screwed up than it's been in a very long time. Our country faces problems that didn't exist back then.
Our country faces problems that didn't exist back then
Hmm...The Civil War, WWI, and The Great Depression. Sure, those were much easier times...
chris - of course you are right (and you know it). I think what I am trying to say (badly I guess), is that I guess I expect our country to be doing better than it is - given the advances in technology, medicine, etc.
I understand. And I respect your opinion, even if I don't act like it at times...
