Another wrong way driver

13 ABC just reported (their website isn't updated so I can't provide a link) that another drunk driver caused an accident going the wrong way on 475. Not that it makes a difference but I believe this time it was a woman.
Thankfully no one was killed this time.
Maybe they need to install those spike strips that flatten your tires if you drive over then the wrong way on the off ramps. That should slow the drunks down.

Your rating: None

Sounds good, but I believe you cant do it for the rare instances that rescue vehicles might need to use an offramp to get to an accident.

Snow Plows, Over weight trucks, people exiting ramps too fast.

Spiked ramps will probably cause more harm than they will prevent.

I'm glad that no one was killed this time. If it had been a holiday weekend there may have been more traffic and a different outcome. I hope that this one goes to jail too for Aggravated Vehicular Assault.

Regarding the spikes, here is a statement from ODOT:

Police say the driver of a pick-up truck was drunk when he went the wrong way on I-280 on December 30th, hitting a mini-van almost head on, and killing a young mother and four children.

Michael Gagnon now faces five charges of aggravated vehicular homicide.

But could have better road barriers have prevented the crash?

ODOT says no.

Spokeswoman Theresa Pollick says, "Unfortunately, this is a very sad case. The driver was impaired, and there's not a lot of signs that can prevent 3-times over the legal limit. There's not a lot you can do when a driver is that impaired."

ODOT uses wrong way signs and reflectors on exit ramps.

Signs that were, obviously ignored that fateful night.

Other states believe, signs just aren't enough. In Washington state, officials have looked at using sensors in the pavement that could trigger warning signs and cameras if a vehicle goes the wrong way. "So, for instance, a car traveling the wrong way on an on ramp would trigger these sensors and a neon sign would light up saying, do not enter. Wrong way", says Travis Phelps of the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Other states have looked at using spikes to blow out the tires of wrong way drivers, or using devices that emit an electromagnetic pulse to stall wrong-way vehicles.

But ODOT says, many of these devices are too expensive, or too dangerous to use.

Bottom line, it's up to drivers to obey the signs, and the law.

Pollick says, "It's one of those things where it basically comes down to don't drink and drive"

... that a suite of sensors tied to a basic traffic indicator can be too expensive or too dangerous to use. The sensors can just detect the basic movement of large masses of metal -- hence won't falsely trigger like optical ones may due to weather -- and using 2 of them spaced about 8FT apart can positively establish the direction of travel. These sensors are as small as a USB flash drive, and can be easily set in the roadway with a slit in the concrete for the sensor and the wire. One man with a concrete saw and some patch can get that job done inside of 4 hours; the wiring work will take longer. The traffic signal can be a simple warning flasher like the ones placed over hills for warning you about a red light up ahead. You can put this in 1 position "up-travel" on the highway, and when it does go off, the drivers will be alerted. You can key the triggering to the emergency alert network, too, meaning the police will be automatically alerted to the event and the place.

True, this would add the cost of a sensor and signal suite to each exit. I have SEEN and heard too often about people driving the wrong way on exits on 475 and 75 around Toledo. Perhaps after the latest 5 dead, we should make the investment. And yes, it's going to take more tax money.

It was just an idea :) I hadn't thought about snowplows.

As for them being too dangerous, well if it only hurts the drunk I guess thats better then him killing five innocent people.

I always knew Toledo was backwards...but this is ridiculous.

Even at 2 am, even if you had a few drinks (not condoning it) - even if you're in a somewhat unfamiliar area - by the time you are pulling into the ramp to enter an xway, can you not see which way cars are going? Even those in farther lanes traveling the opposite direction (as in, I-75 N, you can see I-75 S drivers)? Just seems such a stupid thing to do, to not realize almost immediately, that something isn't right - where a normal person would at least pull over to the shoulder of the xway to figure out how to fix the situation?

I know this is probably going to sound horrible, but if you saw the picture of the girl in the paper she didn't exactly look like the brightest bulb on the tree. lol

I'm guessing that (if my assumption is correct) the combination of her being an airhead + a younger driver (only 20!) + a couple of drinks was enough to make a stupid ass mistake like that.

I also wouldn't be surprised if her BAC wasn't terribly high (over the legal limit, but not nearly as high as Michael Gagnon)...she just looks like the kind of person who it would only take 2-3 drinks to start making stupid decisions.

(Regardless, considering all the publicity of the Gagnon case, it amazes me that someone wouldn't have been exercising a hell of a lot more caution...caution that should be used any time no matter what, but *especially* considering the horrific accident that Gagnon caused.)

She's lucky that she didn't kill/seriously injure someone else, her friend, or herself. Damn. But she still needs a stiff punishment...anyone know what the law provides for in her situation?

The ability to tell someone's intelligence, blood alcohol level, and worth as a human being simply by looking at a photo of them. You should get a job as a hiring manager in a large firm!

I dont give any credit at all to some drunk who drives the wrong way on an interstate - they should throw the book at her, but to drop to the level of slamming someone on their looks?

Im going to assume you're the living embodiment of the Venus de Milo or else you're quite the hypocrite. Ive heard female co-workers say that Michael Gagnon is a decent enough looking guy - would you give him a pass because of his looks?

Ah, Saint Billy...the man who has never, ever made a prediction about what a person might be like based on their appearance. {rolls eyes}

I certainly wasn't slamming her looks - she's a pretty girl. Never did I say she was unattractive...but she does look like a bimbo. And I said that even before looking at her MySpace page. Amazingly enough, her MySpace page confirms that my initial impression was correct.

I'll cut and paste a couple of quotes here, just in case she deletes it. Lovely girl, don't you think?

It’s crunk time...
Current mood: ecstatic

Hey- It's Monday night and Jess and I are on some serious alcoholic "I need a drink" type shit. These are the times when I wonder why:

~Why is it that u can always get play until your horny?

~Why is it that the fattest girls wear the smallest clothes?

~Why is it that no guy wants to admit to eating ass- but they'll still do it?

~Why is it that the guys that brag about their packages often have the smallest ones?

~How can a dog lick it's ass and not give a shit but not like the taste of it's dog food? (My dog Meedya)

Anyways- bouta get on that Daquiri and beer stuff

"Hell yea I'm off the mutha fuckin wagon.... what the hell u think I was a pioneer or something... damn!" lol

(But you're right Billy...I bet she's not really a bimbo...)

Sarah, are you sure this is the same girl?

Yes.

WTOL used a picture from that MySpace page when they were reporting the story. (She's deep-throating a Jack Daniel's bottle, and the caption is "The Dangers of Sobriety.")

Here's the WTOL link: http://www.wtol.com/Global/story.asp?S=7609443

I would presume that WTOL would fact check that closely prior to using it for reporting. Also, it fits her description...right age, city, school, the fact that she has a child, etc.

The passenger in the car also has a MySpace page and is listed as a friend of the one I linked for the driver. But hers is private...you have to be a friend to view it. Here's that link, even though you can't get a whole lot of info from it:

Man, I guess if she uses language like a bitch-ho, she must BE a bitch-ho!

Same goes for the gal who got drunk and drove on the wrong side of the road too, I guess.

EWW

^^not that this is at ALL relevant.

From his photos, he does look like an attractive guy. (Just as from her photos, this girl also looks pretty.)

But it doesn't matter if they're the most beautiful person on the planet, the least attractive person on the planet, or (like the rests of us) somewhere in-between...their actions speak for themselves.

(In other words...no, Michael Gagnon shouldn't be given special consideration just because some might think he's handsome...he killed 5 innocent people for crying out loud. )

Her level was at .19 which was nine times the legal limit for a person of her age (.02) and twice the legal limit for an adult.

Also, I agree that one can't jump to conclusions from seeing a picture - here is what WTOL.com had to report about this girl:

Both girls have been released from jail, so News 11 tried to speak with them. They didn't want to talk, but neighbors tell us Dewey is a mother and throws regular parties. Though the neighbor explains when they throw a party, everyone spends the night.

They also have a screencap from her myspace page. This girl was a serious party chick.

I don't agree with her being cited and released. I think a day or two in a jail cell may have been a good lesson.

They need to throw the book at that stupid asshole. Seriously.

... that when Michael Gagnon did his little adventure, he wasn't thinking about the last time somebody got wasted and trashed another driver's car.

This beeeeyotch wasn't thinking about Michael Gagnon this time, either.

We could put Michael Gagnon's behind-bars and jumpsuited photo as a BIG sign on each "WRONG WAY" sign suite on the freeway exit. We could also add even LARGER signs that say "YOU'RE ABOUT TO KILL SOMEBODY SO STOP NOW". It still won't matter.

Don't care or think. Signs, Sensors, Headlights, or Logic is not top priority.

Maybe this all happens since driving drunk is SO F*CKING FUN that nothing else can possibly matter. Just think of how wonderful that must feel!

And as a bonus, when you get into an accident, you just bounce around like a rubber ball and you tend to come out of the wreck just fine. Too bad for the other folks, tho'. The lesson here? EVERYONE SHOULD JUST DRIVE DRUNK.

would you give him a pass because of his looks?

She probably would. Juries do it all the time based on the same kind of reasoning. Frightening, huh?

If you've seen the photos, you'll note that both women look to be pretty banged up. This kind of bruising was probably caused by the air-bag, the device that's supposed to protect you in the event of a collision. The device you can't switch off in the car that you bought and paid for. This is what you'll look like if you hit something at five miles per hour. I note that the paper failed to run photos of the vehicles involved, possibly because the damage wasn't extensive enough.

Her level was at .19 which was nine times the legal limit for a person of her age (.02) and twice the legal limit for an adult.

Which has little or nothing to do with her lack of sobriety, or more importantly, her lack of ability to drive her car in a responsible, safe and sane manner. Blood alcohol levels are established for political reasons by legislators who are keenly aware of the next election and who are being pressured by MADD, SADD, DADD and a host of other alphabet soup professional parasites. These expert horn tooters ought to be ignored in favor of intelligent legislation that stands a chance of preventing this kind of accident.

that a suite of sensors tied to a basic traffic indicator can be too expensive or too dangerous to use.

It's already being done. The toll roads in Illinois and Indiana use a system called EZ-Pass which relies on a sensor and an RFID chip. I use it all the time, and if Ohio weren't so backward the system would be available in that State as well.

The lesson here? EVERYONE SHOULD JUST DRIVE DRUNK.

The only thing more fun than driving drunk is driving while drunk and under the influence of a recreational hallucinogenic, and simultaneously playing with your gun collection. Streetlights, signs, the tires of other cars whose driver has pissed you off all become legitimate targets for six gun justice. You'd be amazed at the amount of excitement you can create by driving erratically at a hundred and ten and shooting at highway signs! Plus, you're actually doing the community a good service by shooting out the tires of bad drivers you find along the way – such as that fool with the bubble gum machine on top of his car, who is tailgating you.
