Angelfood

Have any SwampBubblers utilized the services of the Angelfood Ministries. My Mom did this month. We picked her groceries up from the Maumee Senior Center. What I thought was a program for struggling families is actually open to anybody with $30.00 to plop down for approximately $60.00 worth of food. It appears to be high quality food items with NO generics, dented cans or outdated items. While this program will not completely satisfy her needs for the entire month it certainly will help.

If anybody else has experiences with this orginization I would I would like to hear about them.

I do pretty good with managing the grocery budget on my own - maximizing sales and matching coupons to sale prices. (www.thegrocerygame.com helps, so that I don't have to put too much time into monitoring the sale flyers and coupons)

I shop for a family of 4 and a 75 pound dog. With efficient shopping, I manage to buy all the groceries, household goods (toilet paper, cleaning supplies, etc.), toiletries, and pet products for $400.00 a month. And I never buy generic, outdated, or offbrand products.

Yes, it takes me an extra hour a week in planning/shopping time. But I figure if I end up paying $100 for $200 worth of grocery products, then that's an hour well spent. :)

But it sounds like that Angelfood Ministries would be good for an older person living alone who perhaps doesn't have the time/energy/resources to shop the way I do.

it was for struggling families...then doesn't that sound an alarm in your head that you should probably pass....and let struggling families utilize it?

This is a perfect example of why we should ban all government social programs....to many who don't really need it...use it anyway.

I did pass. It was my Senior Mom who lives on SS alone and struggles with the decision to buy her medicine or food that used it.

Otherwise I agree with you that too many undeserving people may be receiving Welfare. We just had this discusiion at the get together tonight.

To quote the constitution...
"promote the general Welfare," I am not against all government social programs. But, do feel that more reform is in order so that those truely needing it are those who are truely receiving it.

In any case, I do not think AFM is a government sponsored program. I could be wrong.

Sarah,
In these tough times, with dollars stretched thin, is it reasonable to have a 75-pound dog in the household? Unless your canine is contributing, of course. Can he walk on twos and push the lawn mower? Does he grab that trash can by the teeth and haul out the weekly garbage to the curb? Is your dog pulling his weight? If things are tight financially, you need to take things into account, look around and consider who is a burden on the household. My guess is it's the one with the shiny eyes and the tongue hanging out the side of his mouth.

Actually, we're doing fine financially. No need to get rid of the family pet...we've actually considered adopting another dog, because we've heard the shelters have been overloaded since the home foreclosure crisis. (And our dog would probably welcome the canine companionship.)

I shop efficiently not out of dire need, but because I don't see any reason to spend more than necessary on my groceries. If its possible to keep that extra hundred a month in my pocket, why not? I have plenty of things I'd rather do with that money than hand it over to the grocery store. :)

But yes, I'd agree with you that someone who is really struggling to get by should cut corners any way they can. I suppose that's why the shelters are overloaded these days.

don,

my whippet does help out around the house. i have invented a machine that i strap to her legs and when she runs she sends energy through the machine that turns into electricity. since she is a fast little dog she creates quite a bit of energy, so she does hold her own. how does your 3 lb tea cup yorkie contribute?

From what she learned it had been originally meant for those on small incomes, but then someone somewhere decided that with the economy going in the crapper more families might need this service. I checked into applying but you have to apply about a month beforehand. You can buy the smaller packages after you have purchased a larger package. I might do this, but I do find pretty cheap food at Wal-Mart (and the other stores when on sale). There is just my mom and I so as long as we don't enter the "donut hole" of Medicare Part D (where we have to pay all her perscriptions until we come out the other end) we are doing okay. Of course, next winter (with the increased costs of natural gas and electricity) may make this program not just attractive, but a necessity.

i think this is a good idea, and i have heard of the food they offer. my only complaint would be that they need to offer more healthier food choices. they offer a lot of high fat or processed foods. i am very particular about trying to reduce the amount of fat and processed food my family eats. there are too many over weight people in this country, and sadly many of them are over weight because they can't afford, or don't know how to eat better. many of the healthier foods are also more expensive, so people resort to high fat processed foods such as hot dogs to get by.
