AND THE BEAT GOES ON - audio included

"It's for the kids" is the battle cry of TPS and today that cry was cemented in the nomination and appointment of Bob Vasquez to the TPS board seat vacated by Robert Torres. The seat was handed over to Mr. Vasquez by a three to one vote at the board meeting this morning. Darlene Fisher being the dissenting vote. With the appointment of Mr. Vasquez, there will no longer be any speculation on any votes coming before the board. Darlene once again is the Lone Ranger.

In a show of "transparency" the nomination was done in the open but the deal was done in the dark. What is it going to take for TPS to realize that the people are unsatisfied with the status quo? The district has lost more students this school year, now down to less than 29,000 students.

It was mighty odd this morning that out of 12 candidates interviewed Mr. Vasquez was the only one to show up for the meeting this morning ands took the oath of office immediately. Mighty strange!

I guess the students will talk this time by causing more and more chaos in the schools, the streets and the malls, until someone listens to their cry of "we are the kids, and you are failing us."

What's it going to take Toledo?

I wonder if those students that TPS lost was due to the way the school board is run or maybe the way the city is run or both? How many families of the kids we're losing are leaving Toledo for the burbs? I think it would be interesting if there was a verifiable way to find out.

Potentially this would need its own thread, but I thought this was a decent place to ask Purnhrt: What happens with receivership? I'm not entirely certain I understand the concept, and should definitely understand before I start talking about it...

You seem to know tons about TPS and so forth, so I thought you could explain it to me when you've got a moment?

Also, tm, I think that the best way that kind of comparison is done is by comparing the growth rates of the suburban districts with the (negative) growth rate of TPS. While there is no way to be positive that the same students that are leaving TPS are going to Maumee or Perrysberg, etc., it's a relatively statistically reliable way to gauge that.

business as usual, same old same old. twice with in one week, only in toledo. anyone know who darleane voted for? i'm assuming she wanted someone who would help change tps, and not more of the same.

Cheryl Catlin but the writing was on the wall.

Crusader09: I am not sure how a receivership works. I don't even know if it is an option at this point because the politicos are so deeply entrenched in the TPS system (all the way to Columbus) that in order for a receivership to take place would involve Columbus and the governor is no friend of children. My opinion only.

it's nice to know our elected officials, excluding darleane, don't care about what the public thinks and how they voted just a few months ago. we need to remember that when one of the decides to run again. cheryl would have been a good choice.

i'm also irradiated they decided to play the race card. somehow picking a Latino to replace one makes him the most qualified. i personally don't care what race the person is, as long as they put the kids and not the union. expect more of the same. i wonder how much they will be asking for in the fall since they know there are plenty of sheep out there to vote for it.

I personally think that Darlene Fisher is really a piece of work. But it would be nice if some others had a little say.

you know it's nice to have a conversation that does not involve swearing where two people disagree. :) welcome to the board i look forward to hearing your thoughts.....

is that 12 people interviewed, supplied information to the board members, had their hearts set on being appointed when all of the time Ford, Steel and Sobecki's minds were already made up. Mr. Vasquez was in the bag since Robert Torres nominated him to take his seat.

Why would the board go on with the charade of interviewing and then picking the status quo applicant who was rumored to be the choice. What a waste of time and energy for the applicants. The very same thing happened when Ford was appointed. These people are appalling.
