A Stinky Situation.

Carty wants to skip picking up trash on the 4th rather than pay overtime. Seems to me if he's going to skip a trash pick up, the middle of the hot summer is not the time to do it.

The administration wants to save money at a time of fiscal woes is good.

My qualm is that people, some, will not read the paper or know of the delay and we will have trash cans lining the streets.

http://toledoohioneighborhoodconcerns.com/blog

and we pay $5.50 a month more for what again????

Supposedly, it's going to be like this on every holiday. No trash pickup on the holiday, and no day-later schedule the rest of the week. So here's my question - Christmas day and New Years day both fall on a Tuesday. So if your regular trash pickup day is Tuesday, is that two weeks in a row where your trash won't be picked up? Think of how much trash the holidays generate!

...that the reason they can now implement such a plan is because of the union contract, so I can understand why this is just now coming to our attention.

However, the administration could have let us know that this is one of the things on the table for negotiation that would help lower the actual costs of our garbage service....But, if they'd done that, they wouldn't have had as good an argument for the new trash tax...

The more you know....

Amen Maggie!

I believe they City should publish the "Contracts" prior to the signing process so the Citizens can have a look see over the process before it's agreed to.

Two weeks worth of toddler diapers is going to create some serious odor. I might feel a little sorry for the guys that will have to pick up our garbage.

$5.50 a month. 4 pick ups a month.

Now if we skip a pick up one month does this mean next month's trash fee will be $1.35 cheaper?

MikeyA

All employers pay holiday pay like this - it's SOP. We've just added a monthly (fee) tax for this service and now they're decreasing the service? This makes no sense at all,.

My biggest concern is that people on my street won

Doesn't the city have a number you can call to report or complain to?
Maybe Toledo needs to start calling that number complianing about being double charged for garbage pick up and then having the service cut.

Very off topic here (and I was guilty of doing what I'm about to bring up when my kids were little), and please don't get on my case - I am not trying to hijack this thread - just trying to ask an honest question. So, here goes (drum roll........) - why is it that cigarette butts are horrible litter that won't EVER decompose, but disposable diapers (with the plastic outer part) ARE ok, and is NOT considered to be horrible litter that won't EVER decompose? I realize few people toss dirty diapers to the curb, but as far as land fill pile-up, they account for far worse than cig butts ever could. (or, for that matter - hot dogs, which have been tested & take eons to decompose).

or, for that matter - hot dogs

We dont worry about hot-dogs at our house, we give all left over meat to the neighborhood cats. We have about 4 or 5 of them. (im not going to let them starve, if i got leftovers 8-)

Having a problem? Need to report something? Want to speak with someone NOW?
For non-emergencies call the City 24 hours 7 days a week at (419) 936-2020. Operators are standing by!

Our P.O.S. mayor was just shown on the news, saying that if "less trash pickup is the only complaint that citizens have then that's pretty good." What a total IDIOT!! Is he that oblivious?

I wonder if he and his neighborhood are going to be affected by any of the holidays. Of course in his case, he'll just have one of his minions- I mean assistants - carry his trash into another district for pickup. Afterall, they handle his car accidents and dog walking for him.

You know, I was skeptical of the whole recall campaign but I will be at the Drive-Thru petition signing on Saturday. I don't care if it ever makes it to the ballot, I just want my name on that petition.

....I do what I'm doing? They question my tactics and my sobriety? I've been told it's a useless endevor and all that. Well....this would be a chief reason I'm now taking this course. I won't bemoan the obvious.

If anyone is serious about wanting positive change and a new way of doing just about everything..then stand up and start screaming..er....make your choice known. If all that is happening is a bunch of whining..then it's pointless. My anger with the apathy in this town is just the tip of the iceberg. The direction is all wrong, the wrong people are totally in charge of this town, and we the Citizens pay the price every day. Take a good look around you; before long it won't be this way.

The only choice here is to choose. There is no sideling to watch and cheer from. We are all responsible to make this City what it should be. If we neglect our duty to hold accountable the individuals that have generated this disaster, then we are just as guilty of all of it as they are. If you are not registered to vote, get off your butt and get registered. If you are registered, get out and vote your heart, even if there are no "perfect" choices. This problem started here and it needs to end here.

I'm going to continue to put pressure on Council to act, I'm going to continue calling for the Mayor to resign, and in the fall, I will vote the consequences of the results. I will make certain everyone knows the way I'm voting early on.

I want this town to know it doesn't have to be this way for us. WE can have a healthy City, a vibrant, progressive , growing economy and and influx of life so long missing. Don't sit there pretending you don't know what I'm talking about, prepare for action.

Sincerly, Chad

have the garbage men work something that resembles an eight hour work day. at that point, the areas that were due to be picked up could be blended with another day of the week.

for the areas impacted by this....

those residents could drop off their garbage at a central location. hmmmm....how about carty's front yard?!? we should consider utilizing our council members and their yards for this collection as well.

suddenly, i'm not feeling as badly about the new garbage "fee".

Wholesaler1972, what you suggest (in a whimsical way) might not be a bad idea. I have two empty lots (with no houses) in just my block. There is a couple on the next block, too.

Why can

Carty should just pay the overtime & be done with it.
I've heard several people gripe about how garbagemen should just do an 8 hour day - they seem to think garbagemen are slacking off if they finish sooner. I don't know any garbagemen, personally. But I have watched them work, and it's not a job I'd want to do. It's my understanding, that like gas meter readers & mail carriers, that they have a route to complete each day,and once it's completed, they're done for the day. Many of them choose to start early, work fast, and get home sooner. As long as they do their jobs, I fail to see what the gripe is. If the garbagemen can finish their assigned route in 6 hours, it's fine by me. What point is served by telling them to slow down to make the job stretch out two more hours? Or, giving them more work to fill out, till they have worked 8 hours? Perhaps they're not able to complete the route in 6 hours everyday. Perhaps they factor the weather, holidays (they also have families of their own), etc. & take advantage of earlier starts in the summer to beat the heat.

At any rate - if you doubt what horrible, nasty, work trash collecting is, then take a few minutes & watch them do their job. People put out all kinds of disqusting things - leaky, smelly bags, old crappy furniture & bedding, bags of dog doo, sometimes very large items that I'm always surprised they manage to get into the truck. It's hard ass, dirty, smelly, icky work & I respect the jobs they do. I have no problems at all if they plan their work day to finish early - and fail to understand what the gripe about it is. Until you've worked at a horrible, physically demanding job like this - working in the worst of heat & cold & rain - you don't own the right to criticize how they do their jobs.

Starling02, I was a postal clerk. I was never a carrier. But I used to work with some of them who had to give up carrying when they got too hurt to do the job anymore. I never saw a clerk who was forced into carrying because he was injured, but I saw it the other way all the time. I remember one who got to be a good friend told me about the rule of

westsider - I must have better garbagemen than you do. The only time our cans are in the street is when it's windy & they got blown there. I've been happy with ours, for 18 years.

Since I'm retired and they usually get to my address about 8:30 AM I try to be at the window to give them the "evil eye". I watch what they do to me, and my neighbors.

We usually put out just bags. Mom and I use cans to hold the bags until the evening before pickup, and then take the bags out, and put them out within six feet of the curb after 7:00 PM. I notice that the garbagemen dump the cans, and leave them in the street near the curb. This might be some kind of

for the posters that don't have a problem with this, i have a question (more like "questions"). was your garbage picked up this week?

will you be smelling rotten food while trying to work in your yard? will the air around your back porch be filled with the aroma of dog shit? will you be wondering what that stench is coming from your neighbor's trash cans? do you want to smell dirty diapers in 95 degree heat?

my back deck is nearly 30 feet from our trash cans. our neighbors place their cans just on the other side of the fence from there. i can occasionally get a good whiff of the cans while sitting down to relax. i smell the dog shit i constantly clean from my yard. from the smells, i learned my neighbor has a cat and the litter box gets change weekly. i also learned my neighbor must still be nursing their infant (the diapers tend to be "messier" and they reek even worse). thanks, carty...i'm starting to get a real sense of community.

i actually don't mind pickup every two weeks.........IN THE WINTER! i can't wait for my weekend; the 95 degree temps will make me sooooo much happier.

while i'm sure there would be union issues, i'd love to see the city save some coin by going every two weeks. they could possibly do it from november through march. there aren't any 90 degree weather days during those months.

if the union has some issues with it, tell them to go clear streets of snow and spread some salt (with that, maybe we could shave some overtime for another overpaid job program).

if carty wanted to save $40k, he should have controlled his damn flower spending.

----------------------------------------------------------------THAT'S why I'm pissed the most, I think. Coupled with the fact this is no doubt a setup to fine people that don't hear about it. But the heat and the drought are not the time to be doing this.

I "googled" Lima, OH, and got a .pdf that shows their regs. According to their printout they will also come up to the house/garage to pick up garbage for those "seniors" who are 65 or older, or if you have a physical condition verified by a written notice from your doctor. I'm for WM. Get rid of the garbagemen, and let them look for "real" work.

I'm very curious where the new garbage tax is really going. I wish there was a way to find out if some of the people on the 22nd floor have recently bought retirement homes in Florida.

this should be added to the ever-growing list of blunders by carty......

Would we prefer to express comments that we want we want no matter the cost?

The administrations, all of them, are responsible for not seeing the problems on the horizons.

The fiscal problems did not just occur.

There are variants to every process and rules.

My biggest concern is that people on my street won

That will happen when we privatize trash and let a pro handle the crews.

Well I know I wouldn't want to have to load my trash into my car.
Bags sometimes leak.
I don't want the crap in my car do you?
Don't we pay taxes and now an extra fee for curbside pick up?

cry me a river. it may be a tough and dirty job, but these are adults that choose these jobs. considering the work, i'd assume their pay isn't bad. anyhow, if you don't like the work, find another job.

i worked a much tougher and dirtier job (industrial/ hazardous waste field tech...fancy name for a grunt "cleaner") and did so voluntarily. i often worked 60 hrs/ wk and was rewarded well financially. i am also very confident my job was much more physically demanding than "refuse technician".

i don't want excuses and whining; i want value for my tax dollars. that is something that has been long forgotten.

I have every right to criticize how they do their jobs, when it's my tax dollars that are paying their salaries. And here's my criticism - I am getting sick of coming home from work on trash pick-up day to find my trash cans out in the middle of my street, or in my neighbor's yard, or in the people across the street's yard, or in the middle of my driveway. And I dread rainy trash days. Because the garbagemen are too lazy to tip the cans over on their tops, I come home to a trash can full of water. Not to mention some of the time they don't even empty the cans all the way and we have some of our trash left in our yard.

And that, according to Brian Schwartz, is the "Cadillac of trash service."

Yeah, you're lucky. I've been home a couple of times to watch them collect our garbage. They just toss the cans haphazardly and continue on their way. I've thought about videotaping it and sending it to someone.

MikeyA,

What it means is one extra bike path for his (dis)honor's greater and never-ending glory. . .

Czarty gets results....

What he never mentioned though, was that you might not like those results. . .

Adding the numbers...

It was already $12.59 per household for our "cadilac service", add the $5.50 you get $18.09 per month. Any person off the street as an individual can get WM to do it for $16.80 per month. This is why I say privatize or contract out for the service. Nego. as a city with all the population will bring that number uner $11 a month.

"General Fund" my friend..IE: The marina project.

be careful. couldn't they fine someone for that?!?

Maybe thats the big plan... save money on OT and then make some more fining people who forgot and put their trash out or don't have a place to store two weeks worth.

I agree, if you're getting paid for an 8 hour day then you should work an 8 hour day.

our garbage men have a habit of putting empty cans upside down. there are always plenty of remnants falling out of the cans and into the yards and streets.

What do we get for the fee?

What I am asking is; is this for a dumpster? Or are there cans supplied from WM?

Is this dollar figure a one year figure per month or is subject to a rise at some point in time as landfill costs go up.

Are there any other waste haulers out there that are comparable?

http://toledoohioneighborhoodconcerns.com/blog

I spoke with a WM rep and a BFI rep, both are interested in bidding the City of Toledo. WM is well suited as the largest business of it's type in North America. WM uses Teamsters union, WM has multiple cities in Ohio under contract, such as Lima and many more.

On just this one service they provide for $16.80 a month...you get a 96 gal container they provide and 5 additional bags per week. They offer multiple programs and will taylor to our needs. For example, they offer a 35 gal container at a lower cost for seniors and singles that generate less rubbish, and multiple containers for large families. It's all in the nego. They offer the complete package as in rubish removal, recycling etc.

I think the best deal will come from contracting as a city, especially since apts and business's already use one of the two for the most part. With the total population under one contract, that's a lot of buying power.

Costs go up and down on all things. I expect trash to be no less flux, But the "Cadilac Deal" we have now is rubbish!

In Portland we had 8 or 9 haulers to choose from, and I would expect there to be equal competition here for the region.
