Regardless of ones opinion of Tookie's remorse and/or guilt, this nation incarcerates more of its citizens then any other country in the world.

Tookie was an isolated incident. The injustice of the Jena 6? The exoneration of Yusef Salaam and Harold Wilson? The fact that African Americans make up less then 13% of the population, but more then half of the prison population? There's significant racial and economical disparity in this nations courtrooms.

The original question was not about "Tookie". The original question was for you to ask yourself="What would you do if sentenced to death for a crime which you did not commit" The judicial system is deaf and unforgiving to wrongfully accused individuals.

Harold Wilson: The 122nd person exonerated from death row. Spent 16 years in a cage on Pennsylvania' s death row before exoneration in 2005.

You're right, we need to be more like China. We'll kill or use our prisoners as slave labor. Thats what I call rehab!

It is a harsh punishment. But justice is difficult. I'm very glad that with DNA testing so many who were wrongly incarcerated have been freed. I would like very much if any prisoner who requested DNA testing could have it made available. That would answer definitively those who continue to insist they are innocent.

I do believe some have been wrongly executed over time - the new technology should help avoid that in the future.

But in America - if you go out and deliberately kill somebody? We kill you back.

Law of the land.

If a murdered is crippled from the waist down, or the neck down, how likely is he to commit another crime? He is still alive (and able to repent). He is a "living" object lesson to others as he goes about his business. The cost of incarceration is minimal. But it is "cruel and unusual" punishment while killing him/her is not. Go figure?

I think I am blessed that I haven't had to deal with the issue personally, no one I love has been murdered. I have had quite a few other catastrophic events in my life - and I never felt the way I thought before hand I would when one of those 'biggest fears' actually happened. But I imagine I'd have very little sympathy if it were my family member or someone I loved.

But knowing me, crippling wouldn't get the job done. As I said - the law of the land. If you kill one of us - we kill you back.

It's easy not to kill anybody. Been doing it here for 44 years and never a slip up.

You took the words out of my mouth. The only problem with our prison system in this country is that we take too long to enforce the death penalty and that we don't use it enough. Any violent or sex related crime needs to be punished by removing that individual from society...on a permanent basis, and not by putting them up in a prison for forty years at Lord knows how many thousands of dollars of tax payers expense. I have always advocated the return of the courthouse hanging as a deterrent to more crime. Go ahead, all you liberals, lambaste me now.
