Why haven't any of these groups stepped forward to save this house? It is the boyhood home of Art Tatum perhaps the greatest Jazz pianist to have ever lived. It's at City Park and Woodland

Someone should step up and save this building. Admittedly I love jazz, and I would argue that Art Tatum was a metaphorical god among men when it came to piano, but I have to think there is enough cultural and historical value to this house to merit an investment.

Hell, maybe I should buy the place.

Here is "Tiger Rag" for those of you unfamiliar with the genius of Art Tatum; the man played a million miles an hour with a fluidity that is mind-boggling :

Here is one of the few live video clips of Art Tatum:

AREIS shows the owner as follows:

LUCILLE JOHNSON
217 SENTRY HILL
TOLEDO, OH 43615

The property was transferred from Art's sister Arline Tatum Taylor in 2002 at $0.00, and this Google News reprint of a 2001 Blade article indicates that Lucille is her daughter (thus Art's niece).

Mrs. Johnson is nearly 80 now, so perhaps someone will purchase the property from her. I am sure she would want some sort of guarantee that the home would keep Art Tatum's legacy alive. It would be great if the home could be restored to the way it looked when Art Tatum was a child, but of course this would be even more money to put into a house over 100 years old (it was built in 1905).

city done something? Amazing what Fredtheentertainer will do to try to get in the good graces of the black community. Keep up the good work, you still have no place around black students.

As is always the case prunefart shifts the responsibility to the city. Why shouldn't the Black community step up and preserve this piece of African-American history as an example for young people of what you can accomplish? Rather than shove the burden on tax payers how about you get all your FB friends together and do a fundraiser to buy the house and turn it into a center for music training. Studies show that music and art help kids learn. You'd be killing two birds with one stone. And what the hell are the good graces of the black community? Does that mean I get listed on the "ol dog list" Saturday morning?

Any statement I make is the opinion of me exercising my first amendment right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and is generally permitted.

Securing the house, rather than the ambiguous "saving" it, is the primary issue. Since some sort of impenetrable fence would be the only solution for the former, "saving" it requires everyone in the community treating it, appropriately, as a shrine.

Patience is a great virtue.

Purnhrt is right. The city should do something. Bulldoze it if no one will take care of it.

I don't live in Toledo, but if I did, I would be asking my Council representative what the African American Legacy Project did with the $20,000 that Council "donated" to it.

Is there any Toledoan reading this who would be willing to do that and report back what you find?

onus fall on the black community. Black History is American History.

Good point. Many would have to pitch in. And although the Legacy Project would be a natural to lead a preservation and protection project on the Tatum home, it simply doesn't have the capacity in finances or human resources to do so on its own. It's still a fledgling organization, in no way comparable to, say, the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation.

Patience is a great virtue.

That explains Black History month.

would know that since he will soon be involved with black students at Scott High School. Probably needs some training in diversity and sensitivity....smh

I will be involved with students at Scott High School, I haven't asked nor have they offered any specific race of student. Do you have information that only blacks go to Scott, or do you normally discount white students when they are a minority? That sounds racist.

Because the African-American Legacy project got $20K of taxpayer dollars, that's why. Or are you saying that because Black history is American history we don't need an African-American Legacy project since it's really just an American legacy project? Which is it prunefart?

This would be a great high school project. Students' could participate in the renovation project, and possibly get extra credit in the process. Wouldn't this be far better, than teaching them that sitting on their asses and complaining is the best way to learn something?

One would think this group MAY have an interest

and then there's the children who would rather idolize this shit...
