Blade cutting 131 jobs and closing part of downtown facility

I guess the cost of the unions they have always backed have finally caught up with them. http://www.toledofreepress.com/2014/05/30/blade-to-close-downtown-produc...
Shouldn't they follow the plan they offer other fat cat CEO's and take a pay cut at the top first?

This will give a few more people time to travel to Detroit to protest with wolfman about the water dept.

Before you gloat Fred remember the near bankrupt ClearChannel is and has been doing the same to its workers. I seem to remember a CCMO employee named Don who went to city government complaining when CCMO cut his wage and made it a unlivable wage but blamed Government. Go figure? A man that is 63 years old, divorced and has no home or savings should watch when casting stones at glass houses.

So now reporting a news story is gloating? You're view of the world is so skewed. I do remember Don went in front of City Council to complain about the increase in taxes and levy requests. You did get some of your post correct I am 63, divorced. I do have a home, and savings though. You really should move away from the personal facts and concentrate on making your salient (look it up) points.

According to ARIES you sold your house to your former wife from 0 dollars on April 17, 2014. No other record in Lucas county of you owning a home exists. So either you are renting, homeless or have moved from Lucas county. As for your 401K funds the record has been expunged from public view as per request by your lawyer. But I can assume the divorce was a negative also on any future retirement.

Fred will be dependent on Democrats protecting Social Security and that will only happen if corporate controlled Republicans do not take the senate this fall. It would behoove Fred from refraining his war mongering promotion of the military. The Republican party wants to INCREASE military spending by taking from Social Security and Medicare. Fred will suffer if this happens. This is the reality not some skewed world view by FoxNews.

Don blames government for his loss of income from CCMO and not being able to afford his Toledo home.

Obsess much?!

Is there such a thing as obsess too much, I think he finally hit it.

Fred I operate in a factual world not as a corporate shill carrying water for your employer. You called into question my postings and I responded in fact. Can't argue with that can you? I thought not by your response.

The future of AM radio!

doesn't say much for you, if Fred is homeless. He still has a job, and perhaps more money than you, and does more for his community and city, all as a homeless man. You need to crawl back under your rock, you're pitiful.

WSPD portrays Fred as someone with knowledge and wisdom. I find people like you who buy this malarkey troubling. Fred is a high school graduate not anyone with some God given skill than to sit on his ASS by a microphone and find fault with others for ratings. You lose perspective because the new program director has mellowed the station from when Herr Wilson was there. His financial life is a disaster as he tells his listeners often. So when you follow or defend a clueless boob with an agenda to sell whatever for a living, it tells me of the weakness in your mental ability to make informed decisions.

Fred will work well into his 70s while those who can will enjoy life by making their own decisions. Fred knows I'm right, he can't offer any defense but with some sort of personal attack either by himself or his E-mail buddies.. Maybe he can give a public service announcement about how not to live one's life.

Apparently, there is something of which I am not aware that motivates Mrindependent to get so personal and mean-spirited toward another poster.

I'm always interested in people who imply that working beyond some pre-determined age indicates failure. My nephew-in-law, who works at Jeep, began to count down to retirement about 5 years ago, when he was in his mid-40s and had 10 more years to work. Through our conversations, I began to realize that people who have monotonous jobs in bad environments with many less-than-desirable co-workers start to think about retirement very early. I can understand.

It's all about what you accept and expect. If your expectations, talents, and abilities do not take you beyond punching a time card, working strict hours, and producing x-number of widgets, I can see where retirement is like a "Get Out of Jail" card. I couldn't do it.

From my perspective, there's a sizable difference between someone who has a high school diploma and hosts a radio show in a city the size of Toledo and someone who has a high school diploma and works on a factory production line. I'm not suggesting it indicates the quality of the person, but it indicates the levels of acceptance and expectations.

Very good observation, artfully written. But very unlikely to alleviate Paul "Play Misty For Me" Wohlfarth's fixation on Fred.

Patience is a great virtue.

through last Monday, I've never missed a dues payment.

Not all of us work at Big Three Plants, and find a way to NOT pay union dues for years and years. You;re the one playing a charade, mr. Supervisor.

Mrindependent "operates in the factual world" of:

*Obama is a competent leader

*Unions are necessary to obtain and keep a good-paying job

*The Constitution is a worthless document and freedom isn't important (I know this because he hates the group that supports these tenets--the Tea Party)

Dammit, this is a union town and the Joint Council of Newspaper Unions should forcefully respond to this move by cold-blooded management that puts profits over the hard-working people at the Blade. If Zerbey and his crew want to financially decimate hundreds of employees and their families, answer in kind with a walkout. We'd have a whole 'nother meaning for "Stop the Presses!" The brothers and sisters in the Newspaper Guild must act in concert by staging a sympathy strike that prevents the Blade from continuing to update its website. Finally, the thousands of union households in the circulation area must step up as they did years ago during previous management-instigated unrest by canceling subscriptions to both the printed editions and the website, especially if management tries to maintain operations with scab labor. The only thing Blade management understands, or cares about, is maximizing their profits. Hit 'em hard in their own wallets!

Patience is a great virtue.

I've also heard the local buggy whip company is laying off some of its union members. That damn progress!

This must be why Zerbey hasn't had time to fire UT's Jacobs before his announced June 2015 departure. Hurry up, Joe, UT's a wastin'.

Blogs like these highlight the obsolescence of local daily newspapers. I recall that an entry on Swampbubbles several weeks ago announced that this was happening. I believe it was Fred who had gotten the information from a union member.

I haven't subscribed to The Blade for 6 years and have never felt that I was missing out on anything. The egos the Blocks must have to rationalize losing $8.5 million in 2013 just to satisfy their need for power and influence (as silly as that seems in this context).

The Blade is indeed great when it comes to lecturing readers on issues it feels it only needs to address in the abstract. On Feb 23 it editioralized against the outrageous income gap in America and demanded something be done. Three days earlier it editorialized against the Kasich tax cut, saying it would worsen the awful income inequality situation. But when it comes to real-life situations and the livelihoods of 131 employees and their families, it's "Sack 'em, screw 'em, let 'em fend for themselves."

Patience is a great virtue.

Newspaper do you know of that writes partisan columns and remains anonymous.

"DTOM" {1776} " We The People" {1791}

DTOM, all columns in newspapers, wherever you live, use bylines or bylines and thumbnails for columns. All publish editorials without bylines because they represent either the consensus of the editorial board or the opinion of the publisher, who most often delegates the writing to an editor. In this regard, the Blade is adhering to conventional practice. Fred's occasional on-air complaints about "anonymous" columns and editorials is off base. You don't hear him complaining about unsigned editorials in the Detroit Free Press or Detroit News, so that tells you he's misleading his listeners regarding the Blade. By the way, a guy named Paul Wolfarth is going nuts on the Blade site, blaming, among other culprits, Ronald Reagan for the loss of the 131 jobs. I wish the Blade would take off my electronic shackles and allow me to post there again.

Patience is a great virtue.

While shilling for the military industrial complex today I helped raise over $18,000 for the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team. Maybe Mr Independent thinks I should have kept some for myself to help me make it through my destitute older years.
I plan on working as long as I can because I love what I do. Each day is different unlike many line jobs in factories. I can imagine how putting a wheel on a Jeep going by you would get tiring after 30 years. Thankfully I found something better, it probably doesn't pay as well but I'm very happy with my life. I appreciate the obsessive behavior displayed by MrIgnorant, it means he can't get me out of his head. Who else takes time to look up court records, real estate transactions, etc etc and use them as posts? He's the only one I know . I live rent free in his head and it's very spacious living .
It's sad really. Here's a guy who tells us he's happy with his retirement, glad he was part of a union, has a fulfilled life with family and friends, but all we ever hear about on here is how sad my life is in HIS eyes as though that matters to anyone.

Fred Lefebvre (since his E-mail buddies are using real names) forgets the WSPD personal attacks from long ago aimed at me and politicians who have expressed a political difference. The law suits, the radio commercials, etc. No the WSPD radio host shills for money, playing on the uninformed who feel as family as they are led down a path of inequality and racism. Fred has long attacked the union JEEP worker out of jealousy and a lack of initiative to be able the get his fat ass off the couch and make a true living to support his once family. Now the hour is getting late, the fool is now 63 and faces yet many years working. So the bitter man lashes out at those who worked the 60 hour week for YEARS and now are enjoying their earned retirement.

I'm sorry that SwampPeople and others do not know the five year history of WSPD. To think I'm alone in my disgust is ignorant of the facts. The one-sided nature of Fred Lefebvre can be express by the list of Democrats who will appear on his demented morning show. The negative Nay-Bob of Toledo has no-one on that list cause the word is out about his hate filled unbalance personality.

so now you are equating yourself with elected politicians? That's a laugh. There was no commercial ever made of you for WSPD. A very small (less than 30 sec) of the phone call was used in a promo, the name Paul Wohlfarth was not mentioned and your inflated sense of self seems to not let you realize that. When you call a station we have the right to use your call in a promo since you gave implied permission just by calling. There are FCC regs regarding us calling you however which is why your call was so fortuitous for me.
I think you believe you somehow speak for all Jeep workers, and Democrats and it's apparent in my personal meetings with them that you don't

" I can imagine how putting a wheel on a Jeep going by you would get tiring after 30 years". But what about a guy who stands there, hands in pockets, watching SOMEONE ELSE putting the wheels on, getting paid more, and NOT paying union dues, year after year? And then have the audacity and unmitigated gall to preach about how THE REST OF US should be forced into unions? That sort of bullshit pushes hypocrisy into the stratosphere
